General Stutturing in WinXP (mainly sound and mouse)
Dazultra2000 replied to Dazultra2000's topic in Hardware
I'm glad to help you all. Now it's my PC that's giving me problems I'm fairly sure it's either half of my RAM is dodgy, or my graphics card is up the creek. I should be buying more RAM soon, but the graphics card may have to wait (( Just a tip...XP doesn't really like anything less than 256 for smooth operation. Seeing as i'm limited to 128mb for the moment, i'm not enjoying it. -

Ah, well if we are on the subject of highpoint, then 1.03b is the ONLY way to go in my opinion. use the 1.03b BIOS, with the 1.03b drivers, and your problems (should) disappear. that is exactly what i did, and for some reason, the second time I did it, it worked. Make sure you don't assume that the windows default are 1.03b, because they aren't Go to the highpoint site (or Pauls VIAhardware FAQ) and get the 1.03b driver. then, it's all down to your motherboard manufacturer for teh RAID BIOS. Luckily, i have a KT7-RAID, and there are plenty of sites with modded BIOSes around. www.biosmods.com is a good place to start (there are other BIOSes for other boards too) A good BIOS for the KT7 series is either ZT with 1.03b BIOS, or 3r with 1.03b BIOS, but be aware that 3r has the CPU Halt function disabled, and so you will experience higher idle temperatures (although this is supposed to help fix some problems) I suggest trying ZT/1.03b first, and if the problem is still there, try 3r/1.03b. -

whoa! I meant NEWER drivers....the mention of 12.xx and 14.xx sorta gave that away. Anyway, they have a driver archive at www.guru3d.com I suggest you try it out. -

I would suggfest you use some much newer drivers with your TNT. I'm not sure what versions support the TNT, but as I understand it, the 6.xx series of drivers are quite outdated now. I'm fairly sure the 12.xx and the 14.xx series support the TNT. It may be useful to try this and see what results you get. If you don't experience any change, it seems that the problem would originate somewhere else in your system. -
I'm fairly sure that it works fine...without errors. Just to make sure the version you should be installing is 3.2 off the MS site. I am pretty sure I installed that before I formatted and it worked fine.

Have you tried intellipoint in winXP?
-
Wasn't sure where this should go, so i put it here. Anyway...the other day, I decided I would try to see if Syndicate Wars worked in XP (didn't in 2k). To my surprise it actually loaded! To my further surprise, sound worked too! Without the need for a 3rd party app! However, due to my impatience, I thought a long pause was a lock-up, and i rebooted...now, I have lost the ability to run sound again. Any experiences?

I tried VDM, but it crashed before the game would load with a flashing cursor. I am probably setting it up wrong...any input?

I've been running IE6 since the first build was leaked ages ago. I didn't like it to begin with, but now we are at the final build, I can say that I much prefer it to 5.5. I personally like the new features, and yes, they can be switched off with a simple checkbox. It loads quicker, is more responsive, and doesn't seem to hang about as much as IE5.5 did. Go for it

ditto I have the same thing. Luckily my headphones have an extra volume control to boost it a bit, but I would still like my volume back EDIT: I also have a sort of echoey sound going on which I dislike.

It's the HPT370 drivers I think I must have had some mixed up files. Upon the reinstall of 1.03b drivers and BIOS, the problems went. Thanks for the input. Good luck crafty -
Well...after re-flashing my BIOS to 1.03b, and reinstalling the 1.03b drivers....everything SEEMS to be working!!! I'm quite happy...mouse is smooth and MP3s play properly.

I have the exact same problem, and have made a post about it too. I am interested to see any more replies on this.

Well...I updated from the 1.03b drivers & BIOS to see if the newer ones were any better...so it doesn't seem to be that. What is the version windowsXP uses by default? -
It's only started today, but whenever I quit out of any fullscreen 3d accelerated game, be it opengl or direct3d, my desktop gamma is ridiculously high. I then have to load up the display properties and go to the gamma control, upon which the gamma returns to normal, without me modifying any controls. This causes some nasty problems though.. I suspect the gamma raises before the program is loaded, bacause the half life menus look like the gamma has been raised. I can't think of anything I have done to cause this. Can any of you shed any light on to the cause and solution?

Gamma VERY high after any ending 3d app with my GF256

It's fixed. It seems on my original driver install, one of the files wasn't copied across. A reinstall of the drivers fixed it. -
Currently I have a very messy Win2k install, with problems all over the place. I want to reinstall, without ACPI to help fix my ACPI problems. My problem is, that I don't have enough CDRs to burn backups (and I can't afford more). I also fear that my PC isn't stable enough to burn CDs anyway. What I would like to do, is place the hard disk in my other PC, and delete everything apart from a folder with my backups in (about 6Gb on a 31Gb drive). If I was to do this, and then install win2k back on my orginal machine, would my backups still remain intact? So, to round that up: 1) Take out hard disk from THIS PC and place it in my second 2) Wipe EVERYTHING except the backups I need to keep 3) Place THIS hard disk back into THIS PC and install win2k And I would like to know if that backup directory would remain intact.

ctfmon.exe/mdm.exe - spawn of satan. How do I remove the evi
Dazultra2000 replied to Dazultra2000's topic in Software
I have said time and time again. They are NOT system files. and those microsoft links confirm this. One allows you to debug things that have gone wrong in office/IE (NOT useful to me) - mdm.exe the other allows office to detect text in IE and other programs and allows things to link to office (also not useful to me) The microsoft site even says they can be disabled (but NOT the ways I tried..and it says that too!) So, I'll try that. -

Dazultra2000 replied to Dazultra2000's topic in Software
ok... firstly, they are not essential to windows, and are not system files, as when I load IE after removing them....OFFICE asks for the back. And when i deny it, it still works. And...I don't know if you have heard, but if ctfmon.exe is loaded, and you try to use any form of DVD hardware accelerator card....it simply wont work....ever. Sometimes it causes programs to crash, and when they do, they wont go until I close ctfmon down. I want rid of these files....and if it shortens win2k's life, I don't care. they must be disposed of...with haste. I will not have evil in my system.....well, extra evil anyway. -

That's what I did also removed anything to do with office from my startup folder and the registry. ITS STILL THERE! -
Wow, great one. Worked first time Thanks.

not just me then Well...that link is of no use, cos it relates to XP, which is newer than 2000 (duh ) Also, I have tried the ESC/P2 drivers, and that just gives me a printout in one colour only (random too), so, the search continues.
