Well first of, you don't HAVE to lose 2000 if u install XP. You can install XP seperately either on a different partitoion, or even on your C:\ drive (if you have the space) and you can then fdual boot 2k or XP. As for the MBR fix, its not as easy as you might expect. The following will work nicelly IF AND ONLY IF you are running only one OS (e.g Windows 2000). Boot up to a command prompt using a Windows 95/98/Me boot disk or CD. then type in the following fdisk /mbr reboot, and tara! Again, this will work nicely if you have only One OS. Otherwise you will ONLY be able to boot one of your Windows OSs. Also, As for scandisk, I have found that chkdsk and the Windows NT/2000/XP versions of scandisk to be very VERY over simplistic fixing/detecting only very basic errors. My recommendation would be to either 1.) Install Norton SystemWorks and run Norton Disk Doctor ORn even better boot to a command prompt using a Windows 95/98/Me disk or CD, then type in scandisk c: (substitute c: with your FAT32 partition). THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR NTFS PARTITIONS< so make sure you know which partition you will be trying to "fix" Please feel fre to cinsult me for further assistance through email. PM me and I will send you my email address in a PM (if you need assistance that is)

This is a cool trick for al those of you running Windows 2000 or XP and have at LEAST 512 MB of RAM (hint hint: time to shell out memory for that RAM chip you wanted). First of all, I must give credit to where i found this trick. [credits] PC Magazine March 11, 2003 "Speed Up Your PC: 32 Turbocharging Tips" by Winn L. Rosch and Otto Steininger. Tip # 12 page 93 "Lock the Windows kernel in RAM." [/credits] This trick allows you to force Windows to load its kernel entirely into your RAM, which should help with perfomance a bit. Again, proper credit is given to PCMag and the author (above) for listing this. 1.)Open up RegEdit (Start -> Run -> regedit -> enter) 2.) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Session Manager\Memory Management 3.) Then right click on "DisablePagingExecutive", click "modify", enter a 1 then click on OK. 4.) Close regedit 5.) Reboot Hope this tricks helps your performance DICLAIMER: I AM IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THIS MIGHT INCUR ON YOUR SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, HARDWARE, OR ANYTHING ELSE! BY USING THIS REGISTRY SETTING YOU AGREE TO HOLD ME NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY ARISE, AND FURTHER AGREE YOU UNDERSTAND IT WOULD BE WISE TO BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE DOING THIS. YOU ALSO RECOGNIZE THAT THIS TRICK MAY OR MAY NOT RENDER YOUR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM INOPERABLE, UNUSABLE, OR UNSTABLE

A cool trick (req: WIn2k/XP, >= 512MB RAM)

I am terribly sorry If my post was just a waste of space, as that was NOT the intent. I just found this on PCMag (quoted and credited above) and they seem like a very credible source. So I figured for people with plenty of RAm this would be a tremendous boost in performance. Again, i truly appologize if this does not do much, if anything. Although I must agree with AlecStaar. Perhaps a breif description or "review" if you may of why this may not work would be a good idea, not just for me and alecStaar, but for others who may have an interest in this topic. -
Java = OVER MY DEAD BODY. I can't stand ANYTHING that has to do with that crappy language, LOL. I am a Computer Science student and they cram us with all this java s***. I know Java is slow, CPU intensive, nd sloppy. Don't get me started. I'm a C/C++ fan myself. The stongst argument FOR Java is cross platform, and that IS true, but You can still use the QT library and compile for multiple platforms. java = eww. NO JAVA WAR! loool I am still open to suggestions on freeware FTP servers. thanx for the replies every one

Quote: ...another good suggestion would to dump that P.O.S. of an O/S and get XP or 2k3 ? I beg your pardon? I think 2000 is a much better OS than XP (dunno about 2k3 though). It is much better done, and its up to SP4 almost!!!!

Unable to format 2nd partition w/ FAT32 using Win 2k CD

Quote: Quote: They are sneaky like that. In fact it's my theory that they keep a constant list of all the things that they can enable/disavle/ support in each windows version and future versions and then perform customer testing to determine the level of annoyance that it causes. They use this to decide what should/should not be included/enabled/disabled in each Windows release. How else can you explain all the things we've had to put up with over the years? Coincidence? Laziness? Complication of OS programming? Doubtful. It's all about $$$. Well...there you have it! I should of known it was something stupid like that. Here I thought I was the a..hole, but I didn't take into consideration what/who I was dealing with! Yep, stupid me! I have another problem that I wonder if it is releated to this at all. I tried to image the drive after I got it up and running with Drive Image, but get a 'error 12' message (I believe) stating it has to be run from DOS and some other message and a Windows error box that shuts the program down. I have used Drive Image before on another box with 2 bootable drives and didn't get this, but I don't remember if I was imaging the active drive or the other drive at the time. Ah, behold the beauty of Linux, LOL -

By the way, those Microsoft BSODs are getting old. Its not funny! Windows doesn't seem to do well or tolerate switching hardware. That's why I use Linux most of the time -

If All else fails, do the classical BU/RF/RE (Back Up / re format / re install). (lol) -
What software do you use for Mp3/Wav playback?

Quote: Theres a new winamp 2.9x (dont remember exact version) that's excellent. I have heard they are going to completely ditch winamp3 and go on to the next version (winamp6?) since winamp3 failed on so many levels. Really? I think that would be wise, and I do agree, Winamp 3 did not deliver what it promised and crashed waaaaay too often -

Winamp skins not working on Xmms? are you sure you meant what you just said? nebulus is absolutely right. Never had a single problem with Winamp skins on Xmms, or do you mean Winamp 3 skins? I think Winamp 3 sux to begin with, let laone the winamp 3 skins!!! I use xmms 90% of the time (when running Linux) and Winamp 2.8.x whenever in Windows. -
Here are the screen shots of the device manager before and after the mouse dies. Click on the link below to see them. Device manager Screen Shots

I c, I totally understand your position on not formatting. I would be hesitant to format as well If I had a situation like yours. Have you considered trying Windows XP? I can't stand Windows XP myself, but if it solves the problem then what they hey! LOL.
-
cool. Thanx
-
Its the very same machine. Only the mouse works beutifully in Linux but problematically in Windows. Same hardware, same machine, same USB port, different OS.
-
It could be bad irq sharing or hardware, but from past experiences with Microsoft they tend to write really REALLY crappy code sometimes, so it could be MS Windows. Have you tried to reformat and startclean all over?
-
I must admit i didn't read it in full detail. Sorry guys. I just misread what he meant.
-
Yes I did. When the mouse dies, it DIES, as in for all intents and purposes its as if its not there! I even tried unplugging the USb receiver and polugging it back in, switching USB ports, etc... Nothing. Only a reboot gets the mouse back (before it dies again...).

Oh this is waaaay coool. Now I won't have to curse every time I get a "command not found" because i typed ls instead of dir. Thanx

A truly funny post. I'm glad I don't drink

Does anyone have a general idea of when Microsoft plans to release Sp4 ?
-
You know I would love to say s*w windows, just use Linux since I know it can do this. But I don't mean to be a jerk here. If you insist on using Windows to acheive this, may I suggest you consider upgrading to XP? It seems Xp finally caught up with the idea with multiple simultanous logins by different users. So no, I am not being sarcastic or rude. My suggestion is either consider Windows XP, or maybe switch over to the dark side (Linux), LOL

To the best of my understanding, what the System Idle Process does is limit the amount of instructions the CPU has to rip through, which cools it down slightly over a long period of time. The reality of this is a bit more complex. As you probably already know, modern Operating Systems (Windows and Linux included) give you the "iillusionn" of multi tasking by running one program at a time, only very fast. What this means is say you have 10 processes running. The CPU will run process one for say 5 units of time, then process 9 for say 3 units of time, then process 10 for 6 units of time, so on and so forth. to the human eye it LOOKS like all this stuff is running simultaneously, when in fact every second of time the CPu switches between application hundreds, thousand, or even millions of times!!! Long story short, the System Idle process doesn't do much, and that IS the point. By not having your CPU do much, its temperature drops when windows thinks you don't have a "high" load. Think of the System idle process as Microsoft Windows' way of trying to cool down your CPU by software

Wow, you seem to have a matrix of hardware that might have potential problems. For starters, check your available system Ram. I know you said you have 512 MB, but what i mean is the amount of Ram physically AVAILABLE. If you have plenty of RAM left, try the oldest trick in the book. Unplug device by device until you can pinpoint a culprit or "naughty" device. If you do not wish to do that, or have already tried it, my next suggestion would be (even though this is a FAAAR shot) to install Linux. If you can get by OK with linux, it May suggest the problem might be related to Windows or one of its drivers. So to put things in breif, try the following: 1.) Check the amount of Free (available) RAm 2.) Unplug device by device to locate / identify what may be causing a problem 3.) Install Linux to see if similar problems persist (if they do it might be hardware related, if not they might be windows or driver related). good luck
