SUSE ALL THE WAY! REDHAT SUX! MANDRAKE IS OK! PS: I voted for SuSE above!

Dear All, I have an extra machine I wish to set up as a Win2k Server / Suse Linux Multi-boot SERVER. Unfortunately, the Bios ONLY supports up to 8.4GB, and the only way to utilize my 12GB drive would be to run it through the Quantum Disk Manager! Note: Even IF I set up the BIOS to use the drive as an 8.4GB drive, the drive WILL NOT BOOT! So All disk access/partitioning has to be done under the "supervision" of the Quantum Disk Manager! Also note that that I tried setting up Linux through a boot disk under the disk manager (since the machine cannot boot from a CD/DVD)! That failed and setup complained about not being able to access the drive or some BS like that! NOTE: Windows 2000 Server set up worked just fine soI know for a FACT its not a physical problem! Can anyone help me? ANY FEEDBACK IS WELCOME! Also, please feel free to post links to Linux forums so i can post this message there! Please help another Computer Science Student delay his coding for an hour! Note: Intended Operating systems: Windows 2000 Server (currently installed! I'm writing this message from it!) SuSE Linux Profesional 7.3 (kernel 2.4.10) Note: I want to set it up as such just to mess with server stuff and learn more about it (your average computer geek!) Thanx for taking the time, effort, and patience to read through this. I appreciate your (if any) feedback!!!

How to install Linux under Quantum Disk manager
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Slack Space
Hi All, Just refreshing the post. I just went to www.quantum.com and www.maxtor.com and none of them had any knowledge articles about Quantum drives and the 8.4GB BIOS limit! Can anyone help me? I have NOT gotten this problem solved yet! -
Dear Brian Frank, The poll really has nothing to do with this post. I was just curious to find out which Linux distros people like in general!

Oops, Sorry dude! I didn't wanna butcher your name. SOrry again dude! My appologies! Anyways, for everyone who wants to give linux a shot, especially Linux newbies (like myself), SuSE is the "windows" of Linux. Its AWESOME! Easy to use AND with all the standard features available in other distros like RedHat and Mandrake! I'm HOOKED on SuSE! By the way, There are NO BIOS updates for my board that solve this problem! My board is a Micronics Lightning W6-Li Dual Pentium Pro motherboard. Its running two pentium pros @ 200MHz each, and 256MB of EDO buffered RAM. Anyways, neither www.diamondmm.com nor www.micronpc.com have any updates that fix the 8.4GB limit. Anybody has any ideas/tips/solutions? I welcome and gladly accept ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK folks! Thanx everyone for being ever so much hepful! I owe this great community! -
How to install Linux under Quantum Disk manager

Dear CrazyKillerMaster, I REFUSE to try a diffrent distro of linux, LOL. The 3 major distros are 1.)RedHat 2.)Mandrak 3.) SuSE In my personal opinon SuSE is the best of al three! I HATE RedHat! Mandrake is OK, but it still doesn't beat SuSE in many ways! U should try SuSE Linux Professional 7.3! Its WONDERFUL! Anyways, Does anyone have a solution to my problem? ALL FEEDBACK IS WELCOME AND VERY APPRECIATED! Thanx again, Samer. -
Dear ALL, Rockin has just replied via email with this useful tip. I quote him as it came in the email message: Quote: I know the answer to this one! go to run then type in control userpasswords2 this will bring up a W2K style User Account Manager and you can set it up to log you in automatically Rodney Thanx Rodny/Rockin! I'm sure all of us can benefit from this tip!

Alien, It is very simple to change a user name in Windows Xp. Simply start the Management Console (right click My Computer -> Choose Manage) Now, click on the + sign beside "local user and groups" then click on "users", then right-click the user name and choose "rename"! Good luck. I think I'm going to try the TweakUI thing. I can't think of any better way to do it. Oh well! Thanx guys!

Yes, but still. How do you set it to automatically login WITHOUT REMOVING THE PASSWORD?

How to install Linux under Quantum Disk manager
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Slack Space
thanx CrazyKillerMan. The Disk Manager is limited to Fat 16/32 partitions, BUT I have already created thre fat32 partitions for linux. I intend to start linux setup, and have it format these partitons as swap, and 2 ext3s The only problem is Linux setup refuses to start under this disk manager! -
Cool, but is there any way I can do it without Powertoys? By the way, I donot have an "administrator" account. I renamed the administrator account tomy own name, so there is only ONE administrator called "Samer Hassouneh"which is my name.

Hi All, I am quite sad to find out my favorite NES emulator, RockNESX has severe sound problems under XP. This is due to the funky changes Micro$oft decided to make in XP regarding sound emulation and time-frame skipping etc.. Note that this software used Microsoft DirectX 8.0 This problem is NOT present in Windows 2000, so I do know its a windows XP problem. My Question is, is there a way to revert to the Windows 2000 way of handling sound? Maybe disabling XP's funky sound stuff? Note: I tried Windows 2000 Compatiblity mode, as well as NT4 compatibility mode, and windows 95, and windows 98 modes too! and they did not help at all! Help Another computer science like me avoid his C++ assignment some more! NOTE TO MODERATOR(S): I am terribly sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, however, I did not know where to put it, and seeing as it is a sound problem, I figured its close enlough to hardware to be put here. Please forgive me if it should have been placed somwhere else!
-
I want to to do it fullscreen, but even at 1024x768 resolution, It only takes up a very small portion of the screen at the center. There is a good emulator that works fine under Windows 2000 called RockNESX, its porobably the BEST NES emulator out there, but it suffers under Windows XP due to Windows XP's very funky sound handling stuff. Is there ANY WAY to revert to old school windows 2000 style? REPEAT QUESTION: IS THERE ANY WAY TO DISABLE WINDOWS XP FNK SOUND HANDLING AND REVERT TO AN OLD WIN2k-STYLE ???

JNes works great but the screen size is way too small! Eben at FUll Screen 640x480 !!!

Actually, I think Windows XP changes "ownership" of the files when/if they are moved. what you need to do is re-take ownership of those files! If you are running NTFS, right click the folder, choose "sharing and security", and go to the "security" tab. Then click on "advanced" then "owner", and using a point-and-click interface, you can set the owner to yourself, rather than the "Administators" groups! I've had your problem before, and i fixed it this way before! good luck!

Please forgive me if this is a double-post or if its not in the right forum section. I hope its not the case! Does anybody know when Windows XP Service Pack 1 is gonna be released???? I heard rumors that its almost ready for relese!
-
Thanx bladerunner. I'll be awaiting the service pack. I'll keep checking at www.microsoft.com too!

This may not be a real solution, but it is something you may want to try. Go to start -> Run and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Press enter. This will launch a little utility that you can use to enable/disabvle startup programs/processes. Go to the "Startup" tab, and look for any suspicious looking norton things, like NU(something) or NAV(something). Uncheck them to disable them. Next, reboot, and see if you still get the error! If you DON'T it means that its something that starts up with the system! Also, see if you can launch any of the Norton applications after you have done this! Good luck. Let us know if you hjave any success!

Dear All, This applies to BOTH Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Is there any way to password-protect shared files/folders?? For example, say I want to share my CD Drive as "cdrom" yet I want ONLY a specifc user to have access to it through his/her username and password. How do you do this? Note: I do NOT want to use the "allow users to change files" option, I just want to password-protect a specifric file or folder such that it is inaccessible by anyone else except that user with his/her password! Please help. Thanx. Specifcs: Files are to be shared over a simple LAN network. The LAn consists of WORKGROUPS only, no domains!

password protecting shared files/folders on a network
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Networking
I think i may have figured this out after all. This really is a two step process. Read and see if you can understand what i mean 1.) First, we must make sure simple file sharing is DISABLED. you want the complex file sharing not the simple one. Open up a folder in windows explorer then... a.) go to Tools -> Folder options b.) Click on the 'View' tab c.) Scroll all the way down to "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" and make sure its UNCHECKED 2.) Locate the folder or drive you wish to share a.) right click the folder/drive you wish to share and choose "Sharing And Security" b.) If necessary, click on "I understand the risks..." to enable the sharing options c.) If necesary, click on "share this folder" to enable the sharing options d.) go ahead and make the sharing options you want like share name, etc... e.) Click on the PERMISSIONS. In here you can set which user(s) have access to this share and in what ways!!! f.) To customize permissions further, click on the "security" tab and mess around there too! Of coarse make sure in the PERMISSIONS sections to add only existing users, or groups. If needed, make sure to add the users with their passwords, and set up the groups using COmputer management. (right click my computer and choose manage to do this). good luck! I hope this helps! let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to explain better! good luck! -
Hi All, I can't seem to find a WORKING WIndows XP driver for this device. I have managed to find Windows 2000 drivers. However, uipon Installation, Device manager complains that the drivers are not XP-certified. Furthermore, If this warning is ignored, it will simply restart the computer and never boot up again! I tried Safe made but it wouldn't boot either. I eventually had to try the "Last Known Good Configuration" to boot up! Anyways, It looks like the manufacturer never bothered to provide Windows-xp compatible drivers for this device. Please help if you can! NOTE: I checked the NTCompatible Hardware compatibility list and it says the device works under Widnows 2000. Again, Overview: Hardware device: Simple Tech PhotoReader SmartMedia USB Problem: Can't find a Windows XP driver. Windows 2000 drivers will cause windows XP to crash! Please do help if you can. I would really appreciate it!

Dear All, This problem pertains to BOTH Windows 2000 Professional And Windows XP Professional running on a laptop. Here is a breif description of the problem: Power meter not working! Whenever the laptop is running on batteries, regardless of how much battery life is left, it displays 100% then less than 5 minutes later, it says "no battery" and assumes laptop is running off AC power! This problem seems quite common with laptops and win2k/XP. NOTE: This problem does not exist with Windows 98! Can anyone help??
