how to get around ISP-blocked ports

Hi all, my College ISP has blocked all interesting ports, like the ones used for sharing clients such as Morpheus, Kazaa, napster etc... due to what they claim to be "bandwidth concerns" or whatever. My question is, is there any way to get around this? also, what are some ports OTHER than the common ones that you can use and configure software to use that might be blocked. As for the poortnumbers that ARE blocked, I have no idea what they are, but they blocked ALL ports that may be used by software like morpheus, kazaa, etc... Someone please help!

    Wolfenstein Test + NT4

If its Wolfenstien 3d (the game) you're talking about, the NT kernel in Windows NT 4 and windows 2000 generally DOES NOT SUPPORT DOS-BASED GAMES or sound in them! Windows XP does, however! Also, you may try NTVDM (sound emulation for win NT/2k), but i couldn't get it to work for the game either. Sound for wolfenstein 3D works GREAT under windows XP! :-)
  4. Sorry if I am double posting folks. I hope I don't overdo it! I have two promary problems with networking in XP 1.) XP fails to connet to the internet through a LAN: The setup is nothing funky. A 4 port 10BT hub! For some reason, XP refuses to work with the physical connection! I know the connection works, because I am using my laptop (win2k) to post this very message!!! I don't know why it does that! ipconfig says I have an IP address from the DHCP server (I connect to the shool ethernet network). 2.) XP fails to recognize network workgroups: The way our network is set up is that i can see ANY workgroup on the college campus. This IS the case with this win2k laptop, but NOT with WinXP further specifics: 1.) XP's built-in firewall is DISABLED 2.) All necessary protocols and services are installed (Client for MS networks, File and Printer sharing, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, etc..). 3.) The actual physical link works! I use a hub for both laptop and desktop. The laptop runs win2k just fine and connects to both workgroups and the internet with no problems! XP doesn't! 4.) i already checked other posts and the links in them, so please don't just give me links to other posts! They didn't help much! I use my desktop (WinXP) for homework and such, so this is pretty urgent! Someone please reply! thanx

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

Quote: Try another NIC & cable?... The thernet card seems ot be working fine. Also, I just checked the cable on another machine with no problems. I just ran through my network, removed everyhting but TCP/IP (windows did not let me remove it), restarted and re-added back all network protocols and services, and also re-dropped the XP firewall. The problem is the same. I also contacted ny ISP and they simply said they have no intention of supporting WIndows Xp just yet and they did not know what to do either. Note: I do NOT connect to a domain. Just workgroups on a P2P LAN! I sha;ll try trace route next...

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

I just checked my browser settings. they all seem to be OK. My NIC is more probably than not working since basic file sharing over a LAN network seems to be working OK, and ESPECIALLY since I can actually ping sites! I have also just tried netscape, and it has pretty much the same problem! someone please help!

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

Yup. already tried all of that. pings just fine! ALL OF THEM ping ok

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

oops, i also forgot, ipconfig / release and then ipconfig /renew ALWAYS ALWAAAAYS assigns the following IP: 10.4.1.107 Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0 Also, note: I AM RUNNING ON A SIMPLE LAN HUB! nothing funky!!! No domains or anything like that. Auto-config settings for internet, etc... DHCP enabled, etc...

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

I'm being led to beleive more and more that its actually either a client-side problem or something messed up within XP itself! here's why: My XP firewall is COMPLETELY DOWN, yet my computer is failing to connect to the internet AT ALL! my room mate (which shares my connection through a hub) can connect just fine now, and he's running Windows Me (gag me!). I don't understand how come its NEVER connecting now, even though both my room mate and other neighbours seems to connect just fine right now! I ALREADY checked cables/power/etc... and that's not the problem, ESPECIALLY since I can connect to workgroups and copy shared files/folders etc... but i CAN NOT connect to the internet. ipconfig says it gives me an IP and everything but It doesn't seem to be the case for instance: IP: 10.4.1.107 subnet mask: 255.0.0.0 I tried running ipconfig / release and then ipconfig /renew SEVERAL TIMES, and even restarted SEVERAL TIMES, to no avail! somebody please help me!

thanx, I'm about to check it out myself! lol.
  13. Sorry people if this is a repeated post. i already used the search engine and none of the results helped me much. My question is how do you password-protect shares under windows 2000 AND windows XP? Please include for BOTH windows 2000 and Windows XP. btw, this is NOT the login stuff. I know how to do that. this is SPECIFIC share protection by using a password (e.g password protecting a shared folder)

password protecting shares in windows 2000 and XP

I don't want to do it through permissions as i explained earlier. I need to lear how to do it through password-protection anyways!

password protecting shares in windows 2000 and XP

No, that would be far too much trouble by setting permissions to EVERY SINGLE USER. Also, I need to know how to set password protection for shares anyway...

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

Gotcha. I'll try it out if the network seems to go down again. FOr some reaosn it "majestically" started working WITH internet access. I'm beginning to think its an actual problem with the college ISP.

    Windows XP repeated networking problems!

network card IS fully supported natively by all versions of windows. Its an old 3com ISA card. Also, how do you disable the browser service IN DETAIL? please be very detailed in your reply! The DNS servers are configured properly as I have internet access though it tends to be on and off due to our college ISP.

    desktop themes under windows XP

hmm, what exactly is windowsblinds? (pardon my ignorance). I don't think copying themes.exe will solve it, but i'll give it a shot sometime.

    desktop themes under windows XP

Nope! I already tried that. It seems to be a win2k-only thing. I even looked for "themes.exe" in the windows FIND applet to no avail! I repeat: START -> RUN -> THEMES DOES NOT WORK!!!

  25. Hi All, I seem to keep getting this error regardless of what I try! Apparently, It seems that its a Visual C++ problem (the actual program itself). I tried removing Visual C++ and re-installing it MULTIPLE TIMES to no use. I'm running a FRESH INSTALLATION of windows 2000 pro. Someone please help. THIS IS URGENT!
