Well my room nate is an ELI student. Explaining the word "network" itself to him may be a real challeng. Besides, he seems pretty happy with his current set up, oh well. As for Windows NT, one could argue that linux-based systems may be faster for netwroking purposes, but I hate linux myself, and I prefer Windows NT myself, regardless of which OS may be faster. If NT is faster, great! If not, Linux sux anyways!! lol
-
Its not mine to redo! if it WAS, I would slap on 2k or XP on there no questions asked. I HATE 9x/Me but loooove NT/2k/XP.

Surprisingly enough, I just tried playing the same mp3s using a different laptop that's running WIndows Me, and it works great! Apparently, there is something messed up somewhere with the oter laptop!!! The funny thing is, they are both the exact same laptops, apart from hard drive capacity and RAM! (Compaq presario 1700). So it seems like the Mp3s are streaming fine!

Yes we certainly did, but please read my previous post! There's that small issue that needs to be fixed! It really bugs me! of coarse I can work around it by copying files first, but the beuty of a LAN network is "preview" before you decide to copy, and i really REALLY want to be able to just play those mp3s right off the network! Any ideas as to how i can solve this problem?
-
hmm, we got another problem here! When playing an Mp3 file from the Xp machine (directly from the network, NOT copying it first), the file gets stuck at some point. Different files get stuck at different places. Any ideas/tips/hints/solutions ANYONE?

Dear Clutch and AleecStar, Especially AleecStar. Thank you soooo mcuh for helping me! I owe you PLENTY! It was that d%^$%&^^% firewall. With it down the network both WORKS and has great performance!!!! I really REALLY appreciate it dude. I owe ya BIG TIME!

Ok, went into computer management / services + Applications. All it does is lists a set of running services and processes. the firewall service is not clearly labelled. any ideas?

I'm not sure how to actually drop the XP firewall. bear with me here! lol!

Quote: Change it to "Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP Server" instead of "Enable NetBIOS over Tcp/IP"... on BOTH machines! AND, tick off the "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" checkbox too! How do you do this in Windows Me? I've already done it in XP. I looked under TCP/Ip settings and they don't seem to have such an option there

No no no! you got me allwrong. "kosher" was a figure of speech. What i CAN do is get you the ipconfig /all on both machines that are under the "pearljamrox" WORKGROUP. Is that ok? Oh by the way, so you have MSN/AOL/ICQ/Y! etc... this is getting intoa conversation, so it'll be better if we can send IMs, don't you think?
-
Unfortunately I can't do that. I am browsing a college network consisting of multiple workgroups. The best I can really do is get information from my machine, and one other windows Me machine (the troublesome one) since it's my room mate's! So, the two machines on the "pearljamrox" workgroup are "kosher" so to speak. lol By the way, the XP machine can now "see" the other machine, but if it attempts to connect ot it it returns an error message saying i do not have persmission or the "server hasn't been started"! I'm just as pissed at you and i need a good night's sleep which i can't have if this problem doesn't get fixed!
-
OOOOKay, even more problems! Now the Me machine can see the XP machine but not the other wa around! Also, when playing an Mp3 file from the Xp machine, at some point the player suffers and hangs, causing the me system to almost crash!!!! HEEEELP! Also, browsing the netwrok takes FOREVER on the XP machine.
-
Yes, File and Printer sharng IS installed, and so is the client. Also, the Ping DOES work. The XP machine can see all other machines, but not vice versa!
-
This is messed up! Now it makes no mention of the status of NetBios over TCP/IP! This is what ipconfig /all returns: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : fallasteeni Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink III ISAPNP Ethernet A dapter (Generic 3C509b) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-60-97-3B-7C-2D Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.4.116 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.0.2 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 204.70.127.127 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 28, 2011 9:19:2 7 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 29, 2011 9:19:27 AM HEEEELP!

Hey guys, I'm running windows XP and It connects to a huge network of multiple workgroups that span a college campus. Of coarse, the network consists of many workgroups with a mixture of win9x/Me/2000/Xp machines. The problem is that my windows XP pro machine seems to be browdsing the network at a VERY sluggish rate, regardless of whether or not the machine it connects to is a win9x/Me/Nt/2k/XP machine or not! I have set up NetBios over TCP/IP and I doubt that this may be the reason since win9x/Me machines use NETBEUI instead. Someone please help. thanx.
-
hmm, that still didn't help. It still takes FOREVER to browse a workgroup!!1 SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I'M PULLING MY HAIR RIGHT NOW AND I FEAR I'LL BE BOLD SOON!
