Ok, I'll do that. I just un-installed all protocols/service except TCP/IP and i gotta restart before I can re-install them. I thought maybe If i re-build my network connection it may help or something! I'll try it as soon as i restart. I'l let you know of what happens!
-
Oddly enough: A.) NETBIOS IS enabled over TCP/IP B.) My computer is configured to use DHCP/dynamic IPs, so it must be the college ISP! (I'm in a college dorm LAN).

Ok, I tried it. I gotta restart now. btw, I'm running XP NOT 2k!

HOWEVER, I have no problem connectiong to other machines on the netowrk (apart from it taking literally forever!). Its the WIndows ME machine that fails to recognize the workgroup that I'm on. The workgroup's name is pearljamrox btw.

Yes, it pings just fine. results shown below: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping -a 127.0.0.1 Pinging localhost [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Has anyone figured out how to get BOTH a windows 2000 Pro and a Windows XP pro to see each other on a LAN, let alone communicate? NONE OF THE TWO PCS can see each other to begin with. They are on the same workgroup, and when they where both win2k machines they worked without a hitch. Now, one is an XP machine, and it fails to identify itself to the 2k machine and vice versa. Someone please help!
-
Yes, Pings work fine. My XP machine can see and get access to his Me machine just fine. HIS Me machine however, fails to connect to the workgroup for some reason!
-
I tried all of that already, none of it helped! :-( thanx for the reply though. :-)

ALL machines on the network have the following installed, whether be them win9x/Me or Nt/2k/Xp: 1.) File and Printer Sharing 2.) Client for Microsoft networks 3.) TCP/IP -> (ethernet card) 4.) IPX/SPX -> (ethernet card) Also, ALL machines have respecitve user names/passwords under 2k/XP/NT so that's not the problem. The problem lies within acessing some specific workgroup. the Windows Me fails to connect to the workgroup "PearlJamRox" for some reason!
-
Ok, I'll try that as soon as my room mate returns (its his laptop that's running Me). Thanx very much dude!
-
Is it just me or has Microsoft gone too far in forcing people to switch to XP by making it incompatible with 2k? Also what's the deal with the funky annoying new User Interface? Please participate in the poll of this thread

Ok. I still have to giure out how to bing TCP/IP to NetBIOS in Windows Me. For some reason, it has greyed out the check box to enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP.
-
No, but I browse to the different workgroup form "entire network" in windows explorer!
-
Very cool, BUT is there a way to do it within windows (the OS) itself? Also, where may i get TweakUI for XP?
-
Hi everyone, I have problems getting a Windows Me machine to connect to my windows Xp machine through a simple LAN. There are NO DOMAINS or anything funky like that. The machine refuses to connect to my workgroup! For some reason it thinks the workgroup is "not available" even though my windowsXp machine connects to his machine effortlessly! HELP! thanx. PS: I'm running my NETBOS over TCP/IP as clutch has suggested!

Ok this thread should be where people give in feedback on their own strategies to imprive Windows XP Profssional's responsiveness. Of coarse, it would be great if you could keep in mind that some of us (ME especially) are running it on slow machines like dual pentium pro 200/256MB RAm. Such a "slow" configuration does miracles for Windows 2000 Professional but not XP. Oh, by the way. I have a decent enough video card (Vodoo banshee 16MB PCI), so I know responsiveness is not entirely a video card issue! also, feel free to participate in the poll associated with this thread

OLEerror, thanx for your feedback. I have a vodoo banshee 16mb video card. I also have the classical windows theme. It helps a little, but the OS still feels sluggish. Anyways, Quote: So there are a number of ways to speed up XP without purchasing new hardware. Will this make your system blindingly fast? No. But it sure helps until you have the opportunity to upgrade. That is definately true! I thank you for your advice and feedback again! :-) -
Ways to make XP Pro more responsive

My motherboard supports the following type of RAM ONLY: EDO BUFFERED dimm 3.3v 168 pin up to 128mb/chip the motherboard itself supports up to 512MB (a maximum of 4x128). The last time I checked online, the cheapest price i found for a 128 dimm was $76 plus shipping! -

Of Coarse! I have two processors and 256 megs. My machine is too old to make a RAM upgrade worth the money ($75 for a 128mb dimm). Also, EVEN IF i get another 128 dimm, i'm only gonna utilize 96mb of it since it'll have to replace one of my 32mb chips -

To some extent, it may be true that speed=money. However, there must be ways to bring slower machines to do better with WinXp. I can't afford an upgrade at the moment, and I DO know my system has the gutts to at least "try" and run WinXp, so I might wanna have to deal with what I have for now. Any hints, tricks or tips everyone? -
Cool. Thanx a bunch. Appreciate it

As you have said: Quote: Handles 5632 Threads 281 Processes 24 The number of "threads" sucks up a lot of processing power, ESPECIALLY if you're only running one processor. if possible, consider adding another processor to your motherboard (if it is a multi-processor motherboard). I find that even with only two pentium pros @ 200 MHZ each and only 256MB I handle pretty much ANY application you can throw at it with little or no problems! Also, having more RAM is great, but you need to trouble shoot the problem and figure it out for the future. Imagine yourself one day needing more RAM, then what? upgrade to a gig? I really think you should figure out the problem first. Also, DO NOT RUN seemingly inocent programs like ICQ or AIM or "smaller" programs WHILE you play a game like Quake3. Those programs may not be taking a lot of memory but they keep your processor busy. Try to give Quake3 as much a share of your processor's power as possible. Anyways, Good luck. I really hoper you'll figure out the memory problem.

Yes the Ui definately is slow. I'm running it on a slow machine (Dual Ppro 200/256MB RAM) and with windows 2000 it was a LOT faster, even though they both have support for dual processors (XP Professional)

Quote: Now, did you make sure that NetBIOS was bound to TCP/IP ... What do you mean by "bound"?? All I know is this: All computers are networked through a simple LAN 10BT HUB, nothing fancy. No Domain, AD or Server in here! I am more than willing to try networking with TCP/Ip but I don't know how to do it. SOme help here (with good long detail for a dummy like me) would be greatly appreciated. Thanx folks.
