Hi everyone. I have a 3dfx Vodoo Banshee 16 MB video card. Half Life / half Life CS will ONLY work with Software drivers at 640x480. For some odd reason, it will not allow me to use OpenGL (using any resolution) or D3D. If I use D3D i cannot return to the main menu when I press ESC as it gives me a blank screen. Note: I know the video card is capable of working just fine at 16bit depth and 1024x768 under many 3D games, as I have tried it on many other games and it works just fine. Any clues? thanx

Well, there are quite a few non-windows-basic processes running in the background. They are as follows: tcpsvcs.exe - 2,768K (???) mspmspsv.exe - 1,352K (???) inetinfo.exe - 8,496K (???) IEXPLORE.EXE - 11,980K (Internet explorer windows [several of them]) msmsgs.exe - 4,128K (MSN messenger) total amount of memory used by those processes = 28,724KB (i.e almost 28MB) I would close down some of those, especially internet explorer and inteinfo.exe (if possible) since those alone take up a whopping 20MB of RAM!!! even though this may not seem like a significant figure (especially if you have at least 128 megs of ram), they still do use some processing power. So try to close them down. As for the IRQ____..... message, I honestly have no clue. My best guest is to try to un-install/re-install the program. Otherwise you may have to format. Sorry dude, I have no idea what that error message means! Good luck, though. :-)

Beats me dude! sorry I can't be of any further asisstance. However, I still beleive that the hints in my previous post are good strategies to consider. good luck. let us know how things are going! :-)peace

did you try DirectX 8.0??? If not, try that and if it STILL gives you problems, maybe you should try un-install/re-install. good luck. Here's the link to DirectX 8.0a (on microsoft): http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp good luck!

Dear fellow, access violations are usually caused by one of two reasons: 1.) Some program tried to access memory that it doesn't have the rights to. This occurs when a lot of programs are running as one program may try to "steal" memory either from the Operating system (windows) or another program. A good idea in such a situation would obvioulsy to be close down as many running programs as possible. 2.) Some program may be trying to access the NULL memory address, which is a location in memory that should be "off limits" to any program. When something like this occurs, you have an access violation. If a program may cause an access violation in this way, a good thing to try would be to get the latest patch/update/etc to both the program (or game) AND the Operating system. So to keep it short try the following: 1.)get the latest updates/patches to both the game or prpgram and windows, and install them of coarse. 2.) shut down as many applications as possible before running the game (or program). following 2.) usually also helps performance too! Also, are you running windows 95/98/Me? The notorious win9x/me operating systems seem to throw access violation errors left and right depending on their moods ;-) If you ARE running any of those OSs, I STRONGLY recommend considering an upgrade to windows 2000! Good luck. I hope this helps!

I had a similar problem between two win2k machines. You may want to try to change your windows 2000 IPX/SPX frame settings. For instance, to play Half Life multiplayer on a LAN, you need Ethernet SNAP, to play RedAlert 2 on a LAN you need Ethernet II. Of coarse, you may also try Ethernet 802.3 or 802.2, whichever solves your problem. This usually solves the problem. Of coarse, it also goes without saying to make sure both computers have IPX/SPX installed, and a LAN set up just to make sure the computers can see each other otherwise :-) I hope that helps. Oh, by the way, you know how to change IPX/SPX settings under windows 2000, right? If not, let me know and I'll explain how. good luck

Oh never mind. I just downloaded the updated vodoo banshee driver from ntcompatible.com. Works great with OpenGL at 1024x768. thanx for reading though. :-) I hope this post may help someone else!

I need the driver for S3 Vurge DX (4 MB) for windows 2000. The NT4 driver doesn't work! I tried both www.s3graphics.com www.diamondmm.com AND www.driverguide.com and none of them had any drivers beside NT4 ones.

Cool! good luck. This feature of Disk admin that can change drive letters is really nice. I wish iwn9x/Me would have something like it.

Hello everyone. I have a DOS games that requires an expanded memory manager to be present while it runs. Now, since I'm running NTFS on my hard drive, using a boot disk cannot solve this issue! Therefore, I would like to be able to run it under windows 2000 professional. My question consisits of 2 sub questions as follows: 1.)How can you "trick" the game into thinking there IS a memory manager present. 2.)How can you FORCE the game to detect your sound card or work with it under windows 2000? I know VDM tries to emulate it, but I'm not sure it'll work. Note that I have SP2 and the latest compatibility update installed, so that shouldn't be a problem. Also note that simply rebooting using a boot disk will NOT solve the problem either since the hard drive is formatted as NTFS, and no "command" prompt boot disk exists for windows 2000, only for win9x/Me. I would appreciate your feedback. thanx everyone. ;(

Thanx everybody. VDMSound is a life saver. It got the game working just fine under windows. Thanx again! :-)

Quote: Go to properties and alter the memory configuration of the program. Extendedn,Expanded,DPMI,Conventional. It's all there. I am running windows 2000 Pro, and these options for adjusting memory settings are not there. Its a .COM file. I even tried to create a shortcut and mess with its settings, but it didn't have those advanced memory options either! Do you know how this can be done in Windows 2000?

I like Norton just fine!!! I suggest you make the Norton Disk Doctor boot disks (rescue disks) and use them to check your hard drive. Be forewarned though, this may not work on NTFS drives / partitions. Use you can also use windows 2000 itself to scan your hard drive. Go to My computer, right click the drive or partition to scan, and choose properites. Then go to the tools tab and select "check now" to check it for errors! good luck!

Ok, before I proceed, please understand that just like many of you feel, I am quite VEEEERY happy with windows 2000, and its is definately my first choice for an OS, no questions asked. Now, I was hoping to find a linux guru in this crowd, so please bear with me if you hate linux (just like i do). Ok, this pertains to Linux and Windows 2000 communicating over a simple hub-based Microsoft Windows network. I am no expert at this, but I know linux Mandrake 7.1 (the distro I'm running) comes with SAMBA which can be used to connect to a SMB (windows) network. However, After using this command, I could not get SAMBA to communicate succesfully to any of the 2 other windows 2000 machines that are on the network. Does anyone know how this can be done in such a way that i can share files between windows 2000 and linux, or AT LEAST from windows 2000 to linux? Please note that my current windows configuration for the network is as follows: installed protocols / services: TCP/IP (protocol) NETBEUI (protocol) Client for Microsoft Networks (client) File and Print sharing for Microsoft networks (service). As you can probably tell this is a simple home network running on a hub, and nothing really funky. Also note, that EACH of the windows 2000 machines are/were logged on with full administrator privelages. when i used samba to tyry to connect to any windows 2000 machine it returned an error like "connection failed to \\computername\resource" or something similar! Someone please help! Again, bear in mind that I am a beginner with linux, so please use "gentle" terminology and desciptions. thanx!

OK, I have just set up windows to use my current IP as a static IP. The problem still persisits. This is what I type in: smbmount //computername/resource /mnt/s -o username=usernam e password=password (note: removing the user name / password arguments does not help either) Samba returns this: Connection to computername failed SMB connection failed Of coarse "computername" is a valid computer name that's on the network! Someone please help. Also remmeber that my IP is not physically static, its only dynamic. I can't change this due to my ISP. Also note that I have also tried LinNeighborhood but it also seems incapable of browsing the network. ALL MACHINES ARE ON ONE WORKGROUP, AND NETWORKING IN WINDOWS WORKS GREAT, but when i boot into linux, it fails to connect to the network. It connects to the internet just fine, but fails to connect to any windows machines. ALL WINDOWS MACHINES ARE WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL machines. someone please help! thanx!

wow wow wow, slow down. Subnet? subnet mask? easy now! I **think** we're on the same subset since windows has no problem netowrking the machines together. This network is jothing funky. Its running on a 10BT hub with the regular Windows network services/protocols/slients/etc.../ The problem is samba STILL returns a "connection failed to (computername\resource)". Somebosy please reply, in plain for-dummies english!

Just for fun **shrug**. This information can also come in handy! :-)

Quote: have a static IP of 192.168.0.1 for win2k server and from 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.5 are for workstations. When I try to connect to our NT4, the connection was flawless have no problem except we have Sorry, can't help you with your problem. By the way, it is not a good idea to post an actual IP address for public viewing. If you need to give an example of an IP address, you can always say something like 123.45.6.78 or something like that. This is because if some malicious hacker grabs a hold of your IP he/she can cause severe damage if they are smart enough and well equipped for it. This is just a little peice of advice. Take it or leave it. Good luck with your problem. Sorry I can't help.

Well I guess if its problematic for you, its wise not to use it. Personally, I haven't had any problems with the NU site, but I heard a lot of people do/did, so I do beleive you. Good luck anyways. :-)

Nah, I'm too wussy. I'll just take your word for it. lol :-)

Great Work and effort everyone. Keep up the good work. Here's some additional items that work under windows 2000. The ones followed by a (P/W) mean that you may need to mess with a shortcut (compatibility), apply a patch of some sort, or use a workaround. The ones followed by an (N) are "supposedly" NT native and they should work normally without any special set up. Myst (P/W) Mortal Kombat 4 (N) Monster Truck Madness I (N) Monster Truck Madness II (N) Jedi Knight (N) GrimFandango (P/w) RoadRash (N) Beetle Crazy Cup (Beetle Buggin) (P/W) Command and Conquer: RedAlert (P/W) Command and Conquer: RedAlert 2 (N) Note: This list is CONSTANTLY UPDATED on ntcompatible.com. Please visit their Windows 2000 game compatibility section. I would provide a direct link, but I don't know if I am permitted or allowed to fo that (sorry).

Dear fellow, I must disagree with you on Norton Utilities. Norton Utilities have the POTENTIAL to mess up your system, IF AND ONLY IF they are not handled properly. Norton Utilities seems to be troublesome under win9x/Me, but under windows 2000 its a different story! Anyways, regardless of what my or your opinion is on the Norton Utilities suite, you must admit that at least Norton Disk Doctor does a better job at finding and recovering disk errors than Scandisk or chkdsk. For instance, chkdsk might not be able to recover from a "sector not found" error, or somthing similar, but in NDD, you're almost guranteed that it'll detect it and fix it safely. However, if you STILL don't like Norton Utilities, that's understandable, and its certainly your choice to make. I just felt obliged to point out that's its not all bad (if at all). :-)
-
It is true that Norton Utilities (in general) may cause your system to mess up or malfunction, especially if not used wisely and with care. However, judging from the fact that you have partition problems, it may be necessary to use such a powerful product as Norton Disk Doctor (NDD), but please don't get me wrong. NDD is probably the best disk fixing utility out there. I've had wonderful experiences with it myself. As I had described, it fixed a problem due to a "sector" error flawlessly, safely, and quickly. Of coarse, it goes without saying that (if possible) you should salvage whatever critical data and files you can before applying any serious hard drive / partition changes or fixes, but in some case, you need to run such a utility as NDD in the first place to get any disk access! Good luck. By the way, other competing products include Nuts and Bolts, Microsoft Scandisk (comes with windows), McAfee utils, etc... So by all means don't feel pressured to use NDD. However, I am just commending the good experience I have had with it, and I would higly recommend it any time! Good Luck! :-) Let us know if you succeed in fixing your problem! :-) :-) :-)

Dear users, Before I begin, the network setup: Windows Network over a 10BT 8-port HUB. 3 Windows 2000 Professional machines. 1 NUC / machine. protocols / services: NETBEUI (protocol) TCP/IP (for the NICs) - (protocol) Client for Microsoft Networks (client) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (service) All machines work fine on the network for sharing files/directories/etc.. Now on to the question: We can only get 2 machines to succesfully connect to the internet through a cable modem (using this hub) at any given time. For instance, ONLY two of machines A,B,C can connect to the internet through the hub. Does anyone know of any way we can "patch" or solve this to haver all 3 machines connect to the internet at once?? The ISP claims that it cannot be done due to the cable modem limitations, but I've seen situations with 8+ machines connected to the internet through a hub and a cable/DSL modem. Someone please reply, even if it is a simple "no". Thanx!

looks like your CD may have turned bad on you! If its an original (legitimate) CD, Microsoft may help you get a replacement for a relatively resonable price. Call up their customer service number. I would check to make the CD is not scratched or corrupted, then ask Microsoft for a replacement if it is. :-) good luck
