  1. Try this: During setup, choose to stick with your current file system (leave the current file system intact), THEN when windows 2000 has fully been set up, you can convert the drive or partition to ntfs using this command: convert c: /fs:ntfs where C: is the drive you want to convert to NTFS. NOTE: converting to NTFS is NOT reversible. This means once you convert, the only way to go back to FAT16/32 is to delete the partition an re-create it using Fdisk (then formatting) or by using a program like Partition Magic. Good luck!

    Annoying drive letter problem ...

There IS a simple way to change the drive letter. It may affect the functioning of some programs though so beware! go to computer management (right click My Computer, and choose Manage). Then go to Disk Management, and right click the drive or partition you want to chaneg the letter of, and choose Change drive letter! good luck! :-)

Network card has a shaky connection

to releive your self from many headaches, you may wanna give 3COM a try. They make excellent network cards. I have never had any problems with them. Check it out!!! Good luck :-)

    strange problem

Do you have a functional NIC (network card) installed and working under windows 2000? If so, then maybe you should format/re-install. Otherwise, it may be your problem. Also, some network cards act funny under windows 2000. The BEST network cards are made by 3COM and they're pretty affordable too! good luck!

    Linux and win2k network peace?

Thanx everyone. I am currently "messing" with LinNeighborhood AND the console. So far, no success. Samba keeps returning an "connection to (computername) failed!". It never even asks me for a login (username/password) to ligin to any win2k machine. I already have a username and password ready for me to login to win2k. If someone knows how to solve this, please let me know. Again, I am running on a 10BT hub / Windows Network. My linux distro is Mandrake 8.0. I would appreciate some help. thanx. :-)

    No Master Boot Record?

If all else fails, you can re-construct an MBR from a floppy disk. Using a Windows 95/98/Me boot disk, boot into a dos proompt and type in fdisk /mbr it will not give you any messages it will take a few seconds then return you to the dos prompt. Next step, start Windows 2000 setup then abort it as soon as it starts copying files. Remove those files off your hard drive, then edit boot.ini to trim it down to what you want it to look like, then restart! ;-) good luck!

    Partitions, Need Urgent Help!

Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) is SUPERB for fixing such problems. I STRONLGY suggest you use it. see if you can get a tria verion of it, or buy it at http://www.symantec.com It really does miracles! I've had hard drives shoot out messages like "sector error! can't recover data" and it would fix them, and even make them bootable as they were before! Its a life saver! #1 choice for me and others! good luck! PS: PartitionMagic for Windows is probably better than that for DOS. try that???

Old DOS Games Needing Sound Drivers, Plz Help!

Unfortunatley, if you wish to play any DOS games under windows, the best way to do it is using windows 95/98/Me. The reason is Windows 9x/Me are built on DOS and are in reality DOS with a nice GUI "shell"! Windows NT / 2000 is a pure from-scratch OS that is NOT built on DOS. This is probably the primary reason why you cannot get sound from DOS games under windows 2000 (or NT). Also bear in mind, that in DOS/Win9x/Me games and applications are allowed almost direct access to your hardware, so your sound hardware can be accessed directly under DOS/Win9x/Me, which is one other reason why it works fine there. HOWEVER, windows NT (and 2000) DO NOT ALLOW GAMES AND PROGRAMS ANY IMMEDIATE ACCESS to hardware. What this means is that a dos-based game needs to as WINDOWS 2000 (or NT) for access to the sound card and so forth. Windows NT was NEVER written to work specifically for games, and dos games were not written to ask "windows" for hardware access! To keep a long story short, your BEST BET is VDMSound which was described earlier with the link someone gave you (above). Good luck. I hope I'm not mistaken about any of this. If I am, someone please correct me. Also, I hope you benefitted from this info! :-)

    Choppy games

Unfortunately, due to the windows nature, choppy game performance could be caused by anything from poor (or low) system resources, to plain old buggy drivers or even hardware conflicts! However, judging by your system configuration and the fact that your games work fine under Me, it may in fact be poor drivers. Of coarse, it goes without saying to have the latest drivers for ALL your hardware, but you may have to prop inside the hood and mess a little. First back up any critical data and stuff, then disable all multimedia hardware (of coarse, this may not be possible with your video card). Then enable your hardware one by one and see if some peice of hardware may seem to cause the problem. If so, then voila! otherwise, it may be driver problems. What I would also suggest is that you try a different video card. Some video cards are notorious for not being very compatible with NTx (NT/2k/XP). You may wish to try a simple yet compatible card. For instance, a vodoo banshee (my card), even though its old, and has only 16 megs of video memory, its still VEEEERY compatible with 2k, AND it offers resonable (if not stunning) game performance. My first intuition is that your Nvidia (or ATI) card may be the cause of the problem. I've heard that Nvidia and ATI seem to not work well with windows 2000 in some cases, but I could be mistaken! I hope some of these suggestions help. GOOD LUCK!

    Monster Truck Madness 2

behold the power of Windows NT!!!! Try this, it may actually work. Since MTM2 is made by microsoft, it should be compatible with NT/2k! If you get weird errors under 2k, a possible cure is to make a shortcut to the set up file (or the game .exe file, whatever...), and apply the compatibility thingy to "Windows NT SP5". You'd be surprised how many games/programs seems to "like" windows NT as opposed to windows 2000 or even 9x/Me! Of coarse, this means you need to have installed BOTH SP2 and the application compatibility update (the latest version is 1.5 or 1.7 - I'm not sure). Both of those are available from the Microsoft web site for free. So give that a shot. I know for a FACT the game should work under Windows NT so this trick may actually work! good luck!
  11. Hi, I was just wondering how you can set disk defragmenter to automatically defragment all drives! for instance, I wish to set Disk Defragmenter to defragment all drives by itself, without me having to do it manually after each drive or partition has been defragmented. Someone please help! :-)
  12. Dear ghayes, thanx a lot for the very useful info. I really apreciate it! I may actually give PD 2k a try sometime when i get y hands off of pc games for a bit lol thanx again! :-)
  13. thanx. Maybe i'll try that. is there a way you can actually set disk Defragmenter itself to defrag all partitions / volumes / drives?? I mean just like the deframgmenter in win9x???

    Red Alert 1 under win2k

Has anyone got C&C Redalert (NOT REDALERT 2) to work under windows 2000? if so, how? I tried copying the setup files ot hard drive, and applying the patch, but both setup.exe and setup95.exe complian about being run under windows 2000 (NT 5.0). If someone has got this game to both INSTALL and run, or even just install, please let me know. note: I already have the latest version of the application compatibility update (1.7) and that does not help either!

    Red Alert 1 under win2k

To whom it may concern, I have just figured out how to get the game tyo work under windows 2000. It wasn't easy. In fact its a little qwerky and complicated, but should you stick through it, you'll be on your way to playing it. Here is what you need to do: 1.) Make sure you have the lastest version of the application compatibility toolkit, as well as the latest service pack (currently SP2). The compatibility update can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=29763 2.) Make sure you have the version 1.08 update patch from westwood. You can find this on www.westwood.com 3.) Make sure you have a working copy of APCPMPAT.EXE which you can find on your windows 2000 CD. 4.) Install the compatibility update and SP2 (if necessary) 5.) You now need to "trick" the setup program into thinking that you are actually not running windows NT (windows 2000 is Windows NT 5.0). To do this, run APCOMPAT, and select "windows 95" (or 98) and browse to the setup.exe file on the redalert CD. APCOMPAT crashed two or 3 times consecutively for me, but it got the setup to skip the NT check ;-), so don't be surprised if APCOMPAT freezes. This should be normal behaviour. Now set up the game as usual. IMPORTANT: do NOT run the game just yet, keep reading... 6.) Now is the time you apply the patch. If you don't apply the patch, redalert will give you a weird SDB Initialization error or something. So you MUST apply the patch BEFORE playing the game! 7.) Last, but not least. Go to the directory in which you installed red alert. Now make a shortcut to RA95.EXE and edit its properties (by right click->properties). go to the compatibility tab, and check "run in layer" and choose "windows 95" or "windows 98"! Now, whenever you wish to run the game, make sure you run it from the shortcut you just created and edited! If you still have problems, reply to this message and I'll be happy to assist you! Peace out and good luck!
  16. Ok, here is a tough one. I have a Windows 2000 Server machine, and a Windows 2000 Professional machine and I have full administrative rights to both of them. The problem is the following, both machines are connected to a LAN through a 10BT hub. Normal networking through Workgroups seems to be working great, so I know that there is no physical communication problem between the two. As for IPs, both machines are set up to use dynamically allocated IP address, and i CANNOT change that (very long story). Here is the problem: I have set up an Active Directory with a Domain COntroller on the servver macine. Furthermore, I have added a computer account and a username / password so that the workstation (win2k pro) may be able to connect to the server. Whenever i try to change the NetID to connect to a Domain instead of a workgroup, I get a prompt for a computer name / domain / user name / password. When i fill those in, I get another prompt AGAIN for the user name, password, and domain, and i fill those in again, but then I get an error message that says "The following error occured while attempting to join the domain 'domainname': The network path was not found!" and that's all i ever get. Again, there seems to be NO PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION problem as sharing files/folders/printers works just fine, but logging on to the domain does not! Someone please help. Any (in fact, ALL) feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanx!
  17. Thanx everyone. I guess I'll HAVE to do some reading for a looooong while. lol :-)
  18. Hmm, pardon my ignorance, but I'm still new to all this server bsuiness! I am not even quite sure what Active Directory is, let alone what a "domain" is supposed to be. Anyways, I have messed with ActiveDirectory a little, and I beleive its set up properly. However, how the *&$^#*@ do you set up a DNS server in a simple way? Bear in mind the following: -All machines are bound to DYNAMIC IPs, NOT static ones. Therer is no way to force static IPs on them (succesfuly) [read below]. -Only two simultaneous MAC addresses allowed by the cable modem / ISP, therefore due to the fact that one MAC address is already taken, and my workstation took the other, the server CANNOT be assigned a MAC address of its own, so for the sake of internet connection, it should be offline. So how exactly do i set up a DNS server. All i want the domain to do is simply control file shares / printer / folder / file sharing, and so forth, and nothing really fancy, so this should be a peice of cake for you guys. Someone pleeease help. I'm lost here!
  19. Thanx, but the problem does not seem to be accessing a network resource throuh a workgroup, so copying and pasting a working link should have no effect! The problem lies in the cat that a client (workstation) machine is unable to recognize and communicate succefully with another machine on the network AS A DOMAIN server. The workstation DOES in fact establish a connection with the other machine and can access shared resources, BUT it does not recognize it as a SERVER, but merely as another workstation on the network! Please review my first post (the one that started the thread), and it explains what i mean. Thanx for tyring anyways. I appreciate it! :-) The call is still out to anyone who may know how to work around this problem. Again, please read the first post of this thread as it contains a detailed desciption of the problem!

You have two options really. Use a search engine like google (www.google.com) or even better, search the Microsoft Knowledge base for this issue. good luck!

    File Sharing over 98

I have run into the same problem a while ago, and I was able to get around it easily. Here's EXACTLY how you do it. In your windows 2000 machine, right click My Computer and choose "manage". Wait for the management console to come up then go to "local users and groups". Then click on "users". Next, choose New->User from the Action menu, and type in the setails for the user AS IT IS on your windows 98 machine. For example, say you log on as MrG with password IamCool (case sensitive) in win98, you would then create an account with user name: MrG and password IamCool (again, CasE SenSitIve)! Them, there's one last thing, in BOTH make sure you have the following protocols and services are installed: NETBEUI ->(your ethernet card name) (protocol) Client For Microsoft Networks (service) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (service) You may also have other protocols installed such as TCP/IP (which you need for internet), and IPX/SP etc... Those two are not necessary for networking and sharing files, but they are useful to make any use of the internet ;-) By the way, I assume you know how to share files/folders/drives/printers under both 98 and 2000. If you don't let me know, and I can help ya out. Hope this helps, and good luck! :-)
  22. Thank you for your reply. However, I am quite uncertain that I am running a DNS server alongside Active Directory. I;m new in this feild, and I did not want to mess with creating a DNS server as I am bound to using dynamic IPs, NOT static ones. The bottom line is that i do not know how to set up a DNS server to begin with. Also, assuming that I DID set up a DNS server, if I set my workstation to it, then I'll lose my internet connection, since the DNS server is set to an IP address in order for the machine to connect. The reaosn for this is that I am running a cable modem connection to the internet, and it only allows two simultaneous MAC addresses (internet connections). my brother is running one of them, so I am stuck with one and only one MAC address. which means that if i change my TCP/IP settings to point to a server DNS, I may lose my internet connection. If you know how I can set up a DNS server, please let me know how. Like I said, I am a beginner, but I think i have what it takes to be able to set this up. Thank you for your feedback, and please let me know if you can help me with the DNS server thingy. (Assume that i am NOT running a DNS server) thanx again! :-)
