Since you have checked for spyware/viruses, I suggest that for starters you lay off using MSN, and especially avoid providing your username/password in that dialog until you figure out the culprit. I WAS gonna suggest a virus/spyware scan round, but you say you have done that already. Have you tried disabling the Windows Messenger Service (its NOT part of MSN/Windows messenger by the way).

NIS = a pain in the < beep >. Suggested Solution: Get rid of NIS, and install something decent like ZoneAlarm. Note that when I DID have NIS installed, I ran into very similar problems to the one you are facing. I am now happier than ever with ZoneAlarm

Well, In my opinion one of 3 possibilities is taking place here 1.) The actual file(s) may somehow have been corrupted. This could be due to a failing hard drive, a bad file system, or a million other reasons. Suggested course of action: chkdsk /f <driveletter:> [as suggested by fpin] 2.) You may have encrypted the files in your old installation of windows. You would have to find a means to decrypt them. This is of course a difficult task since Windows encrypts the files with your old user name, and even if u use the same username and password, it would be very difficult to recover from this. 3.) Security Permission on the file(s) or partition. If you have access to an administrative acccount, AND if the partition in question is formatted with NTFS, you may mess with the security settings to allow all users fulle read/write/execute/special permissions. I really REALLY hope its case #3, as that would be the easiest to fix. I hope these suggestions help in some way.

You may also give Hiren's Boot CD a shot. It not only resets passwords, but has some cool software on it too which you can use for such tasks as partitioning and "limited" data recovery.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite in a CORPORATE environment? Any tips?
shassouneh posted a topic in Security
Hi All, I am an IT spe[censored]t working for a travel and tourism company here with about 8 machines (all Windows XP). We are currently running a server with a combination of Norton Anti Virus Corporate Client/Server setup. I am really considering switching to ZoneAlarm, as it is my personal prefference, and because of various issues with NAV that we can't seem to solve. Here are the basic requirements: 1.) Fully automatic downloading of definitions 2.) Some sort of Client/Server management scheme where the "server" is in charge of downloading updates and pushing them out to clients (like NAV Corporate does) 3.) robust, yet lightweight on the system One real problem we are facing with NAV is that we use Thunderbird as an e-mail client. Whenever we get a message with a virus attached in it, NAV simply quarantines the entire inbox, rather than block the attachment or message in question. I was hoping that switching to ZA would address this since ZA would only scan for such a virus if/when the file is actually saved or downloaded from the message. Since we use POP/SMTP for e-mail, we do not have the convenience of having a site like yahoo or hotmail deal with the virus threat for us. Restoring the inbox from NAV's quarantine and sifting through it on a daily basis is a HUGE pain and hassle. So my question is: Is there some sort of client/server setup or configuration for ZoneAlarm that can help us acheive these goals? I sniffed on ZoneLab's web site for "corproate" solutions or software but all I found was ZA Internet Security Suite which runs at the client (or workstation) level. Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. NOTE: Please do not try to convince me to avoid ZA. I use it at home and I personally think its the best security suite currently out there, and I've tried Symantec and McaFfee's offerings! -

I also looked around and decided Zonealarm was the only real alternative. I know a lot of folk have complaint about Zonealarm but when you get down to the nitty gritty of these problems I usually find that they are not using the full suite or has other virus and firewall installed as well. Zonealarm likes to be the only suite on a machine. I tried and tested it with other systems and clean, and with a clean install, (No other virus or firewall) it works flawless. Me? a fan of Norton? LOL. **** no! hehe. The ONLY Norton product I have true respect for is Norton Ghost 2003 (Ghost 9 was a huge disappointment. waiting to give 10 a chance). As for the ZoneAlarm/ZoneLabs choice, I have used both Norton, McAfee, and ZoneAlarm. Not only does ZoneAlarm have rock-solid protection on all fronts, I find its interface to be the most "professional" looking (rather than built JUST for dummy users), and as an additional bonus, it runs the lightest on the systems I have installed it on. Even a relatively "outdated" system like my 2000 Athlon XP runs it like a breeze. Anywho, I am STILL oepn to suggestions on installing and/or configuring ZA in some sort of corporate environment. ZoneLab's site has very VERY limited information in this regard. All they list is pretty much pricing when it comes to "corporate" solutions. -

Hi All, First off, the setup: MSI K7t 266 Pro v1.0 A (MS-6380) Mouse: Logitech Optical Wireless USB Mouse. Behaviour: The Mouse starts up just fine and works, but after a certain period of time (about 5 to 10 minutes) it dies COMPLETELY, and windows reports a "USB Device Not Found" error. Can Anyone please help? NOTE: The Mouse itself is NOT faulty. It works flawlessly and perfectly in Linux!

Hello All, I have an interesting problem for the gurus out there. I have a machine set up with all the software I could possibly ever need. The installed size is roughly 12.4GB. I wish to transfer all of this onto a different machine in one easy go. I have tried Norton ghost, but on the other machine it simply gives a blue screen (due to a different hardware set). Can anyone offer any insights on hwo this can be done? NOTE: All software has proper licenses to run on more than one machine. I just want to save the time and headache of installig everything manually on the other machine.

HI All, I am considering buying a copy of Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time, but their site (as well as some people I have talked to) say that my video card will not work with it. I have an Nvidia GeForce4 MX440 128MB 4x AGP video card, which is a very capable card. Is there a patch or workaround I cna use to install/play the game If I buy it? I don't beleive my video card is not capable of playing the gane (as Ubisoft claims). Can anyone help? Thanx beforehand

Dear All, For some reason my start menu now doesn't load the "programs" section. If I switch to classic start menu, then go to programs it says "empty", but if i right-click and explore I can find everything under the start menu! I need to use the start menu for several reasons. Also note, This issue exists for all users, not just the administrator. I have just logged in under a diffeent user name and the problem still exists! Can anyone help me?

Launching The Windows Find files/Folders manually? (This may also apply to XP)
shassouneh posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hi All, I appologize if this is a repeated topic, but my searches on the forums where unfruitful. Also, I am not entirely certain where the best section would be for this topic. If it needs to be posted elsewhere would a mod kindly move it? OK, here is what needs to be accomplished: I need to manually create a shortcut that calls the Windows Find Files/Folders in Windows 2000. Obviously what windows does is it calls explorer.exe but passes enough information for it to automatically open the search pane on the left. Unfortunately, I need to manually add a shortcut to this in my ObjectDock, and the only way to do it right now is to launch explorer.exe and manually hitting F3 to show the search pane. How can I create a shortcut that directly calls the windows Find Files/Folders? Thanx for taking the time to read this. I hope someone can help. -

shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Customization & Tweaking
OK. I finally found a workaround. This workaround is courtesy of THIS site  Please follow the following steps EXACTLY 1.) Create an empty file called ManualFind.fnd and save it in C:\WINNT (or C:\Windows depending on your version of windows and where you chose ot install Windows) 2.) Create A shortcut to "C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe /C C:\WINNT\find.fnd" (of course change this to the path that meets your sysetm if necessary). Win9x/me users link to "C:\Windows\Command\command.exe /C C:\Windows\find.fnd" 3.) Use the shortcut. (NOTE: A command prompt window should flash, then disappear launching the Search/Find Files thingy for you! 4.) DONE -
Tricking Windows 98 into mapping a local folder as a network drive?
shassouneh posted a topic in Legacy OS
Hi all, The following WILL sound silly, but it has an advantage to it, so kindly bear with me. I have a Windows 98 machine called Main, with a share on it simply called "shared". Whenever I chose to map \\Main\shared as a network drive (N: to be exact) on a different machine, it works like a charm. But If I try to do this ON the "Main" machine (the Windows 98 machine), I get an error (see below). The purpose of this is I would like Anyone on ANY machine in a locla network to assume N: points to \\Main\shared regardless of which machine they are using. This has the obvious advantage for the less tech-savvy since nothing changes as far as how they think of drives. The following image is a screen shot of the message I get when i try to map \\Main\shared as N: on "Main". Is there a way around this? Thanx for taking the time to read this -
Tricking Windows 98 into mapping a local folder as a network drive?
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Legacy OS
Oh ASSIGN. I forgot completely about this command. Thanx for the reminder. I also found an alternative solution. It relies on the nifty "loopback" IP. For those of you who are not familiar with the loopback, it is an IP which represents your current machine, regardless of whther or not its connected to the internet and/or has a dynamically or statically assigned IP. The advantage of loopback over your IP is at boot up time you may not be connected to the network or internet, and thus you are stuck with the loop back. THE FOLLOWING IS FOR FUTURE REFFERENCE AD ANS A DOCUMENTED SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THIS TOPIC ADDRESSES YOU WILL NEED TO READ THIS: 1.) use the Assign or SUBST trick described above (courtesy of Alec§taar) 2.) Map using your loopback IP which is 127.0.0.1. So the mapping should look like <DriveLetter>: mapped to \\127.0.0.l\<ShareName> Would a Mod be kind enough to either Pin this topic or copy/move it elsewhere so it is easily accessible from within a search box (since it is a documented and solved problem). Thanx beforehand -
Hi All, This one got me stomped. For starters, let me specify the hardware and software configuration AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.66 Ghz) Palomino Shuttle AK32VN Motherboard (AGP 4x) 512 MB Kingston DDR 2700 Nvidia GeForce MX 440 SE 128 MB AGP (4x/8x) Microsoft DirectX 9.0c Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 Before you tell me to look for another video card, please be aware that i KNOW the MX 440 is a horrible card. However, it should work just fine for the purposes I desire. Here is the problem: EXTREMELY choppy graphics and the Direct3d Test is very choppy (around 1 to 2 fps). I have 4X AGP enabled in the BIOS. NOTE: Command And Conquer Generals Zero Hour works FLAWLESSLY, but the Direct3D test and games like No One lives Forever 2 are extremely choppy. Yes I HAVE shut down all apps, done a BIOS update, visited Windows Update, and installed the latest nvidia Drivers. I even tried setting on the DMA settings (I tried EVERYTHING) Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanx beforehand PS: Please do not flame me. I DID search this forum extensively before posting!

Choppy Graphics Possibly Due to Hardware? Help Please
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
UPDATE: I now know the cause, but not how to fix it. For some weird reason, the Nvidia card takes IRQ 10. But, Unfortunately the VIA USB Universal host Controller also assumer IRQ 10. This explains why I get smooth graphics as long as I move the mouse (which is a USB mouse). Moving the mouse sends interrupt requests that cause more bandwidth to be sent on the IRQ 10 line. To attempt to solve the problem i went into BIOS to restrict how it assigns IRQs. All that did however was to pick IRQ 5 and still both the video card and the USB shit use the same IRQ number now (5). HELP! -
Choppy Graphics Possibly Due to Hardware? Help Please
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
UPDATE: I have a logitech wireless optical mouse. When I have it plugged in, and run the Direct3D test, it runs the same EXCEPT when i move the mouse. Moving the mouse seems to get it going MUCH faster. I do not know what is responsible for this behaviour, but I beleive it might be a step forward in troubleshooting this annoying problem. Can anyone help me resolve this problem? Thanx you for taking the time and courtesy to read through this thread. -
HI All, Can anyone help me with this. I found a decent deal on a 9600 SE. Here is the link Radeon 9600 SE 128 MB Is this card any good? Thanx

Dear All, My cmputer has tripped out on me. Every time i try to start Windows Xp setup it gives me a STOP error with a different message depending on my hardware/bios settings. Right now I have a minimal set of hardware (hard drive, DVD drive, and video card). I get stop errors like crazy when i try to set up or boot XP. Sometimes it says IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL_TO other times i get an acpi.sys error, and sometimes even a PCIIDEX.sys error! HELP! I need to do my micro assembly homework. this is URGENT! Note: as instructed to do so by the STOP error, i disabled my cache memory and setup began, but it is really REALLY slow. I want to be able to use my cache memory!
