Thanx for the input jmmijo, However, MOST of these cards offer too many bells and whistles for my system (see short description above). Even If i DO get the latest and greatest vido card, the rest of the system will be a huge bottleneck. So I prefer to get something more in par with the rest of the system, yet if at all possible, I would like it to be powerful enough to run suich a demanding game as POP:SOT. Any ideas?

That's funny. I bought the Geforce 4 as an UPGRADE from a geforce 2. I thought I was getting a spankin hot card. Oh Well. Can someone recommend a video card for me to buy. I DON'T have a very hot machine, so I will have to buy something reasonable. Here is my current configuration: Athlon XP 2000+ (1.66Ghz) (266MHz FSB) Palomino core 1GB DDR 2100 RAM (266MHz FSB) PLENTY hard disk space Soyo Dragon Plus (k7V) motherboard Note that the AGP slot is only 4x. Can someone recommend a decent card for this configuration. Note: I prefer nvidia cards over ATI because I run Linux.

Windows NT/2000/XP Does it work OK with your PC
shassouneh replied to jsaunders's topic in Legacy OS
that's odd! I have had much worse luck with XP crach isolation than windows 2000. In my opinion, Micro$oft screwed around way too much with XP and ruined the OS. -
Hi All, I have this annoying window that keeps popping up from time to time. I think its either spyware or adware. Lavasoft's Ad Aware and Spybot's Search and destroy (each with its most recent updates) both fail to find this program and eliminate it. Here is a screen shot of what it looks like. Can someone please help? Its bugging the heck out of me! this is a JPG file. It was hosted on geocities and therefore cannot be shown directly. it must be downloaded. its only 2.74KB RIGHT CLICK -> SAVE TARGET AS

You are right. After doing some research on Symantec's security response site, it said that you need to clean the registry (and it shoowed exactly how0. also, it said to run Norton Anti virus with the full system scan oiption after you update your virus definitions and everything should be OK. I did precisely as Symantec instructed and NAV did not pick it up at all. I cleaned up the registry, and I am about to delete the ddm folder. I had a hunch to delete the ddm folder, but I did not want to risk it until I was 100% positive. Thanx for the recommendation. I will delete the folder. If I run into more trouble, I will update this thread.

I will have to knock on your door next time I feel like driving for 6 hours, hehe. I have a few bones to pick with people who drive in Oregon state. Sorry I could not resist iot, hehe -
LOOOL. No comment. back on topic. I know this is a cliche question but "Is there any ADVANTAGE in runnign FAT over NTFS when it comes to gaming?" PS: by gaming I mean games designed for windows 2000 and above (not dos or w9x/me games)

lol. This is NOT a pop up ad! I already have pop ups blocked. This is an ACTUAL PROGRAM. It has its own process and everything. Taskman lists it as "Project1" and the process attached to it is "sysu.exe" repeat: this is an APPLICATION not a pop up! Thanx for the feedback though

Thanx for the tip DosFreak. I was trying to avoid going off topic there. I was using the C&C example simply as a concrete example to this theoretical kernel business. That's all

The best defraggers for disks and registry
shassouneh replied to silicongod's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have personally used two defraggers. 1.) The built in Windows 2000 defragger 2.) Symantec Norton SystemWorks Norton Speedisk (2003) I have had mixed results with both. Defragging a hard drive is a tremendously time consuimiung (and somewhat resource consuming process) so It is really hard to tell WHICH is better. I think Speedisk has an entirely different approach to defragging disks than the built in Windows 2000 one. I don't know which to recommend, but I would most probably stick with the Norton one -
Well I am no expert on video cards, but using some common sense I can come up with an answer to your questions. It would be foolish of ID Software to mark their minimum requirements too high. After all, they Do want to sell the game to as many people as possible. So from a marketting and sales stand point, I see that ID Software will most probably have to set the minimum requirement for a video card somewhere around 64MB or (more probably) 128MB. As for Nvidia vs. Ati, it would also be completely foolish of IDSoftware to lean towards one versus the other. People WILL have Nvidia cards, and if you try to tell them "To play this game you MUST have an ATI card", chances are that they will just laugh and not buy the game! So from a strictly marketting and sales point of view, IDSoftware will be somewhat forced to support BOTH Nvidia and Ati (despite what Carmack prefers). Also, as I mentioned earlier chances are 128MB would be sufficient if not super. So in both cases a 256MB Ati or Nvidia will be sufficient, if not super for Doom 3. remmeber: IDSoftware wants to sell the game. And they cannot sell it by pushing requirements too high or sticking with support for only one video card maker. That's just my 2 cents.

transferring a win2k install on a new box.
shassouneh replied to bug_666's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I do this all the time. In fact, I was forced to switch motherboards. What you do is you create an image using a program like Norton Ghost (which I highly recommend). Then use this image to "restore" the software on another machine. So you cna take a "snapshot" of your OS and software and settings and save them to an image. Then using Norton Ghost you cna VERY easily and VERY quickly transfer everything to a different machine and windows will re-detect youir hardware If you need some help with norton ghost, I will do my best, but you will need to acquire a copy of Norton Ghost for me to help you. -
NO. I use Mozilla for everything. I have not used IE in years (literally). I refuse to use IE! The Save Target As (or save link as) MUST be done because of the way geocities works. Anywho, the Window I get I get whether or not I have any browser windows open. Even with absolutely no browser windows open and mozilla.exe completely shut down, I still get this annoying window.

Hi All, I am soryr if this is in the wrong section, but I couldn't think of anywhere else more appropriate to post this. Disclaimer: I DID do a search on the forums before posting this. None of the results relate to what i need. The Setup: Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67GHz) PALOMINO CORE running on a Soyo Dragon Plus K7v 512MB DDR 2100 (266MHz) Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 Disclaimer 2: This problem DOES NOT EXIST IN LINUX! I say this specifically to make a poin that I don't think my hardware is faulty. The Problem: I seem to be experiencing VERY poor performance! I have no idea why. Sometimes the system is nice and responsive, but most of the time, its just going like a slug! I was thinking that maybe it may be related to Windows 2000 not being optimized for Athlon XP processors. Is there a patch or something that improves Athlon XP system performance on Windows 2000? Below are snapshots of my Task Manager (just to see what I am running) Any and all feedback is VERY welcome. And again, I appologize if this is in the wrong section Running Applications Tab Running Processes Tab Running Processes (list scrolled down) Tab Performance Tab

Poor performance: Athlon XP 2000+ On Windows 2000 Pro SP4!
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
yeah, weird to say the least! I wish windows offered a way to do a semi-reboot. That is reload the system without having to reboot you know. Because some stuff that windows loads at every boot does not need to be reloaded. Just load it once, and let u have the option of rebooting system services! -

Windows NT/2000/XP Does it work OK with your PC
shassouneh replied to jsaunders's topic in Legacy OS
Quote: XP has built in crash isolation - wich prevents an applicaiton that crashes from BSOD'd the O/S as well - and this works very well - sometihng 2k does not have - not to mention more comaptibilty with many software applications and games. - more so newer ones. For the second time, this is NOT true. Crash isolation has been there ever since Nt4. Windows 2000 has crash isolation too. windows 200 shells out proigrams such that if one program fails the others remain unaffected! -
Quote: XP also has built in crash isolation - the thing that if a progrma crashes it does not kill the O/S - it just kills the app. That feature was available since NT4. It is NOT something new in XP. Windows 2000 has that too. The idea is that each program is "shelled" so tat if anything goes wrong in it, it occupies a different memory space than other programs so the program will die and everything else stays up. Windows NT4 and 2000 BOTh have that feature. If you look at "professional" usage of Windows, you find that most companies stick with windows 2000 for two reasons 1.) Licensing fees 2.) Reliability Unfortunately I do not have any data to back up this claim, but I am 99.9999% confident windows 2000 is more solid and reliable than XP is.

Poor performance: Athlon XP 2000+ On Windows 2000 Pro SP4!
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
Well Still, I do not see how this all works. The Service tool under Administrative tools, IN THEORY, should allow mt eo enable/disable services, and set how their startup mode is like, The error i get is for ALL services. If i try to start/stop ANY service I get that error, So I do not think it is related ot any specific process. Also, I STILL don't see how this database lock business works. IN windows, you are SUPPOSED to be able to switch services on and off using that tools without the hassle of the registry (providing you are an administrator, which I am)!!! -
Games may not care too much about the file system, but some of them care about the kernel. For Instance, Command And Conquer Windows 95 Edition. If you install it on Windows 2000/XP it will not run because it complains about not finding an entry point into the kernel. Trying Application compatibility modes will NOT solve this problem because the game was written to take advantage of win9x/Me kernels sigh

Poor performance: Athlon XP 2000+ On Windows 2000 Pro SP4!
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
Oh wow. Pretty long read. What I don't see though Is why I can't do this the easy way. I mean the services thingy SHOULD allow me to start/stop services on the fly. What's this whole database lock business?? -
I need a good socket A mobo that works w/ 1800+ and win2k
shassouneh replied to pr-man's topic in Buy, Sell or Trade
I just switched to a Soyo board and I am extremely happy with it. I am running an Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67Ghz). Soyo Dragon Plus K7V I can get u a link that sells it (no box) for a cheap $30 (U.S). Let me know if u r interested PS: The board only support the PALOMINO core of athlon xp processors. Chances are your 1800+ is palomino, but I would double check -
