Hi All, I am sorry If I am posting this in the wrong section, but I did not find another more approproate section. I am wondering If there is any way to use Visual Studio .net to design and code Java. And I am particularly interested in GUI Java. Note: J# is NOT an option as this is for a database class and they are REQUIRING the use of Java. Unfortunately, most (if not all) Java IDEs out there lack two important things 1.) Acceptable Performance 2.) Ease of making a GUI (try making a GUI in C# and compare to Java!). I am running Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 and Visual Studio .net 2003 Professional (framework version 1.1). Can anywonw help? Thanx

hehe I don't think so. Jbuilder rna just fine (apart from it being a pain in the behind) Also, I have OpenOffice (which requires Java) and it runs perfectly too. The ONLY Java program that did not work properly as it should is Netbeans

Hi All, I just tried NetJeans 3.5.1 I'm sorry to say this, but its a peice of junk! It wouldn't even start up. It keps throwing exceptions left and right, and I never got past the Splash screen. Not very impressive at all. So far I found JBuilder to be the most promising, byt unfortunately JBuilder itself doesn't work properly either. It writes code for the GUI I design that doesn't even work. The compiler complains about unavailable classes, and this is a nice clean INstallation!!!

Hmm I downloaded Netbeans before. i just never bothered to mess with it. So far I have tried multiple versions of Jbuilder (Borland) and JDeveloper (Oracle) and none seemed to be what I am looking for. I will try netbeans. Thanx for the reply

Quote: I switched to SHUTTLE only because SOYO's tech support is severely lacking. Back when I first installed the board, I got a beep error on boot up. It took many LONG DISTANCE calls to California before I could get someone that understood my problem (or that I could understand ). I just bought a Soyo Dragon Plus (K7V) board. I should have bought this a LOOONG time ago. EXCELLENT board! As for their tech support, their online tech support is excellent. It helped me trouble shoot the issues I first faced that had to do with faulty memory and shorting with the case. Thanx for the replies everyone. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND my Soyo board (and any Soyo board) to anyone, ESPECIALLY to anyone who just wants a motherboard that WORKS

Thanx for the replies everyone. I don't need nForce or DDR 400. Pleaselook at the specs above. They're nothing fancy. As for MSI, my motherboard (that just died btw) was an MSI, so i am very skeptical about MSI right now. I tried MSI and ECS and both ended up being more trouble than they are worth. There is this CHEAP Soyo motheboard available online (open box) for $30 shipped. I heard many good things about Soyo. What do u guys think? Do you think Soyos are solid and/or reliable?

How to host software on a Windows 2000 Server Domain
shassouneh posted a topic in Everything New Technology
This is one for the experts in Nt/2k System Administration. If my understanding is correct, you can install a peice of software on a windows 2000 server, and make that software available for all workstations that connect to that server. For example, Lets say you wish to install Microsoft Office. The idea is to install it on the server such that you only need to install it once, and all the workstations can use it without having to install Microsoft Office on every single machine. Also updates to software can be made on the server machine rather than having to update every single machine. Does anyone know how I can set this up so I can install/update software on the server, and have all the workstations "grab" the software as they need? Thanx beforehand. PS: I DID search the forum before posting this, but was unable to find anything relevant. So please don't flame me. -

How to host software on a Windows 2000 Server Domain
shassouneh replied to shassouneh's topic in Everything New Technology
Thanx for the reply and Information. Unfortunatley, The Kinds of Applications I wish to share do NOT have MSI installers. They have the regular .EXE installers. Is there a way to convert a .EXE installer to a .MSI installer so that I can still provide the applications? Also How are updates done? so I need answers to the following to questions. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out 1.) Is there a way to convert .EXE installers to .MSI installers? 2.) How are updates done? Lets Say I share up Microsoft office (of course with multiple available licenses for each PC). And I wish to update ALL machines to SR1 of office. How do you do it? Thanx for replying beforehand. -

But how do you do it? Is there a guide on the internet I can take a look at? -
You misunderstood me. Your help is much appreciated. However, I am just pointing out that if any applicable software drivers are available I would have already installed them (which I did in this case). As for the "Waste" I didn't mean YO. I meant the software I instaleld was a ocmplete waste of hard drive space and registry keys BECAUSE it was useless and didn't do jack S***!!! Anyways, I have just checked the MSI board and they have the same set of generic software as before. If someone can help us figure out what the h*** is wrong with these drivers, we'd be gladly appreicative.

No I am not contradicting myself! Read above carefully. I said I installed ALL software sopecific to my motherboard model. The softeware link u gave is "general" to MSI boards. The fact of the matter is I just tried this beta and it proved to be nothing more than a complete watse of hard drive sace and registry keys!!!

No haven't tried them. I looked on my motherboard maker's site (MSI) and all the software pertinent to my motherboard I alreayd installed, but didn't help

Hi ALl, I have a PAL DVD (I own it), and I wish to rip it into a DivX file. The problem is this: i don't have a DVD drive. HOWEVER< I managed to copy ALL files off the DVD by borrowing a freind's DVD drive. So I will eventually need a program flexible enough to encode form VOB files on a hard drive rather than a DVD drive. So can someone kindly post a "complete idiot/beginner's" guide to ripping a DVD from a to z? Thanx.

Cool. I'm checking out the link. Thanx

Quote: Do you have any other USB devices? Do they work when the mouse does not? Do you have the latest USB drivers? Does another USB mouse work on USB when your mouse stops working? 1.) There are NO latest drivers for USB from my motherboard maker s side. The only drivers they have is for USB 2.0 support ewhich I don't have. I tried installing that too but it did not help. I also made sure I formatted to start with basic Windows drivera and the problems still persist. I contacted Logitech and I knew more about USB and mice than ANY of their support staff!! 2.) I do have one other USB device: My HP printer. It works ifne with or without mouse. 3.) I don't have another USB mouse However I can tell you that I know this: The problem has to do with Windows drivers. Its strictly a software issue. The same mouse, same setup, even the same USB port is used under Linux without a hitch! Oh, and I tried switching USB ports between mouse and printer. Same thing!!!

Thanx for all your precious feedback everyone. Your replies have been taken into account and are much appreciated. It would be terrific if some of these utilities are available for Linux as it is my primary OS right now, but I suppose a reboot to WinXP won't hurt.
-
Yeah, JVC seems to make good s*****. As for SVCDs, I have no interest in them. All I really care about is DivX files ona PC. Thanx for the link, I will check it out.

Hi All, I'm having trouble finding the game: LucasArts fullthrottle. All the places I checked out (lucasarts.com, ebay) want ridiculous amounts for it. I'm sorry but I don't thinks its worth it to pay anywhere from $14 to $25 for a 1995 game. I do own a Mac only version of the game. Is there any way I can get the game working under Windows XP?? Any hints? Any and all feedback should be appreicated. thanx beforehand
-
Oh wow. Interesting. Unfortunately I don't own a Mac. I never beleived in Macs myself. the only reason i have the game in Mac format is cuz I mistakenly bought it. It was 5 bux shipped and brand new, so no complaints
-
LOL Admiral LSD This topic was posted in the "Games" section for a reason, hehe. Its an adventure game by LucasArts (the same people who made Monkey Island, Grim Fandnago, and Star Wars games). I have a MAC (for Apple Macintosh) version of the game and I was asking to see if there is any way ot get it working under Microsoft WIndows XP

Server 2003 great OS for gaming!
shassouneh replied to JacobsoD's topic in Everything New Technology
I must say I agree on the performance part. I installed 2003 Server breifly to chekc it out, and I was impressed by the nice launch times. Applications also seem to multitask more smoothly and with higher performance, which is a welcome improvement. I ended up downgrading to XP since I own XP and all I have is an eval verison of 2003, plus the fact that 2003 server offers thigns I will never really use. So i certainyl agree, 2003 has addressed some performance issues. Although I cannot confirm the gaming part because I didn't keep it long enough to mess with the gaming aspects. Does anyone know how it does on old DOS based games? -
