how do i tell if i'm behind a firewall. i can't direct connect through AIM or use Kazaa or any other direct connect software. when i did the winconfig in the dos prompt, my friend told me that the ips of the computers are internal ips that aren't allowed on the internet. i have a speedstream modem model 5871. please help lotus

only one computer needs a modem. you just have to enable internet connection sharing under properties for your dial up connection. thats it. lotus Quote: ok, so now the computers are sharing files and folders! The firewall was blocking and once i added the ip's there was little problem. The last comment brings me to my next question...how do i share my dialup internet connection? Can i share a single connection so 3 or more computers can be online at same time? Also, this may sound dumb, does each computer need a modem? I think it does but since one of the computers i have doesnt have a modem it would be cool if i didnt have to buy a new one.... thx for all your help!

Quote: Netbeui does not come with XP. Microsoft took netbios out of XP. They do have netbios over tcp/ip but if you are going to have to run tcp/ip then why run netbios :x . Sounds like the two machines are talking to each other because you can ping them. What you will need to do now is share out folders if you want to be able to share files. The way you do this is right click on a folder you want to share and click on share. Make sure you delete the 'everyone' group and add users group to the security. This way not just anybody can see and get files from your machine. that is not completely true. Netbeui does come on the windows xp CD!!. you just have to find it and install it manually and your nt 4 machine will be able to see it with no problem. i have 2 xp and one nt4 machine and they all see each other. the 4 thing i have installed are tcp/ip, netbeui, file and printsharing for microsoft networks, and client for microsoft networks. i also have one xp machine share it dial up internet connection with the other xp and nt4 machine. lotus

yes sorry i forgot to mention. i only run NT OS's. i have three computers here at work running nt4 2000 and xp pro. this is going to be my home computer. mainly for games some graphics website stuff and cad, mastercam. thanks lotus i currently have a dell 933 p3 with 512 ram and a geforce 2 gts 64meg ata 100. i like it but ghost recon plays a bit choppy when you crank all the settings to high. Quote: LotusGT69, I'll first ask a very important question that everyone seems to have forgotten: Which OS are you planning on using ?? ...just because someone stumbled into this forum doesn't automatically make them a user of XP or 2000. If you're in love with Win9X, a recommendation to move into a dual-proc system is quite silly. Also, for Mr.Four and Twenty to recommend you a dual-proc system without even having the slightest idea what you're going to do with this system, or what OS that you're familiar with...is a completely senseless recommendation. Not to mention his advice to stay away from amd/via/abit...I would expect more from a guy with 922 posts. Just do what eveyrone else does: Which is purchase a board/cpu/ram combo from a well known company with a good reputation and you will be fine. Instead of spending countless hours listening to opinionated mumbo-jumbo, I would purchase something that you feel will work for you after a slight amount of research....Then, spend time researching and learning how to put it together properly. To base your purchases purely on someone elses bad experience isn't always the wisest thing to do. Far too many people with limited experience will purchase a combo and then bad mouth one of the manufacturers...merely because they were too lazy to figure out the exact problem with their hardware/software combination....Bad mouthing the manufacturer is much easier. To further that, I once spent WEEKS on and off the phone with Compaq engineers....only to find out that a specific server-level Compaq NIC we had purchased was TOTALLY incompatible with a certain combination of hardware and software that we were using. Nothing short of purchasing a new NIC would correct the problem....but we didn't bash Compaq because of the problem. Anyway...sorry for the rant...but hopefully you get the point. Good luck....
