Windows XP Pro - 64 Bit Edition

XP Pro 64 Bit Edition is the best client operating system I've ever used. No problems with any software or drivers with it whatsoever. Stable as heck. If I need any other OS I load it up in a VM.

    Happy new year!

I don't know how many of y'all remember me... but I've been an NTCompatible guy since about 1999. Haven't stopped by in about a year as I got more into gaming and less into OS issues. Thought I would stop by and say "hi". Surprised to see many of the same ole people still here! DosFreak and clutch... awesome! Oh yeah, and Happy New Year!

    OWA 2003 Not Completely Loading

Ok.. it's been 2 days and I can't figure this out. Fresh install of Windows 2003 Standard, and Exchange 2003. All is working fine except for OWA 2003. I'm certain, beyond much doubt, that it is a permissions issue with IUSR. I've proven this by assignint the Admin account as the anonymous account, and everything worked fine. Also, every request to the \ExchWeb folder is returning 401 errors. I've tried giving IUSR all kinds of access, but nothing seems to work... and yes I've tried MSoft.... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280823 That KB article describes exactly what's happening, but it did not fix the problem. Below is a screenshot...

    Help installing GAIM...

I'm a noob to the Linux world, so I apologize for the basic question... I loaded Fedora 4, bareboned. No additional packages were installed during installation. I figured this would force me to learn a lot about how to set up a Linux system from scratch. I've been working on this for a couple days now without much progress, so I'm turning to you guys for a little help. I wanted to start off simple, install GAIM. I found out that by doing that I had to install gcc-4.0.2, gtk-2.8.7, and glib-2.9.0. It took a lot of error messages and research to figure out I needed these. However, even with these installed, I still get the following message when attempting to ./configure GAIM... *** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occurred. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed. configure: error: *** GTK+ 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GTK+ *** development headers installed. The latest version of GTK+ is *** always available at http://www.gtk.org/. That's a little better than the message I had been getting recently, about not finding GLIB. After adding /usr/local/lib to ld.so.conf and running /sbin/ldconfig -v that seemed to go away, presenting me with the error above. Somehow I need to get GAIM understanding that yes, I do in fact have these items installed. Any help? Please reply in noob-terms so that I can understand. I'm a seasoned Windows IT guy, so some of this is rather foreign to me. Thanks!

    Invocation at Viele's Planet

This is certainly "off topic", but if any of you are near Springfield, Illinois, and like heavy/death metal then come check out my band, "Invocation" at Viele's Planet on April 8 at 9:00PM. We'll be playing with two other bands from Illinois, Pound for Pound and 13 1/2. http://invocation.atowndown.com

    XP joining 2003 server Domain

Copying all the contents from your Documents and Settings\USER folder to another user folder should keep all settings. The NTUSER.DAT file containes all your HKEY_CURRENT_USER settings, and various other files (Desktop.ini?) keep other settings like wallpapers, menu bars etc. So if you have a user "1234" with all the settings you like, copying those files to user "5678"'s folder should work. As for the strong passwords... start\run\mmc, "ok". Add the Group Policy Object editor snap-in. When it asks you what for, select "browse", then select "Default Domain Policy". Close out of everything until you're back to the snap-in. Expand the top node, then expand "Computer Configuration", then expand "Account Policies", then highlight "Password Policy". You'll notice in the right window "Password must meet complexity requirements". If you disable that, then you should be able to use whatever passwords you want. To make it take effect immediately, you should run "gpupdate" on the xp client machines. Otherwise just wait a couple minutes and it should propagate.

    Desk Top missing, icons okay

Greetings calvinc. Have you tried surfing the same pages with different browsers like FireFox? If you can browse the same page without problems using FireFox, then it's possibly you're the victim of a "browser hijack" spyware program. If you aren't, your IE could just be messed up. I've been to websites before where they automatically make IE fill up the whole screen and sometimes turn it a color. Nothing ticks me off more. That's the closest I can come to identifying what your problem might be. Try a different browser and post back. FYI, PC-cillin isn't really something you should rely on (in my opinion) for virus protection. Stick with something proven like Mcafee or Norton. AVG has a free antivirus client that I've heard is pretty good. Always make sure definitions for all your anti-stuffs are updated.

    XP joining 2003 server Domain

Answer #1 Let's assume your login name is "1234". When you log into XP/2000 a folder is created under c:\documents and settings named after your login ID. For example, c:\documents and settings\1234. If you join this machine to a domain, and you create a domain account named "1234", and log into that domain with "1234", then a folder will be created called c:\documents and settings\1234.DOMAIN. One way to get all your settings back is to log in as a local administrator on the machine and move everything from c:\documents and settings\1234 to c:\documents and settings\1234.DOMAIN. If you would like to only have the "1234" folder, then copy all the contents to a temporary folder, then delete all "1234" folders. Log into the domain with "1234", then logoff, login again as a local administrator, and copy all the temporary files into the "1234" directory. Clear as mud? Answer #2 It's always a good idea to force strong passwords on your domain. I would recommend leaving this setting in place. However, if you'd like to disable it, you can do so in Group Policy under "default domain policy". I don't remember exactly what node it's under, but it's in there. Hope this helps.

    Gigabit Network Hardware

Wasn't sure if this should go under "networking" or under "hardware", but it was more of a hardware question I thought this was more appropriate. I'm going to replace my 100mbps network at home with gigabit. Basically, I was hoping to get some input on hardware. Currently, I'm considering SMC for my switches as they appear to be the only ones in my price range that support Jumbo Frames (SMC8508T). I'm not going to spend $4,000 on a Cisco router for my home office, so don't bother suggesting them :-). As for NICs, it appears that the Intel Pro/1000 is the fastest but slows down as you increast frame size. What would you guys suggest? I want everything to support Jumbo Frames. Any input is appreciated.

SAV Corporate 8.1 and Live Update

I'm not sure this will help any further, but my preferred way of depolying a SAV solution is to have AV servers, and AV clients. SAV Corporate Edition has always provided a fairly easy way to do this. In my situation, there is one "Primary Server". All definitions are dowloaded to my primary server daily at a specified time. It is then the responsibility of my primary server to distribute the updated definitions to its clients. I've been using this setup for about 4 years and have not once had a problem.

    OWA 2003 Not Completely Loading

I think I figured it out... somehow the IUSR account password that is "controlled" by windows was messed up. I created my own password and used it instead and all seems fine now. Hopefully it lasts.. --update I take it back... may not be working

    XP UDP Performance

Is there any known issues with UDP performance on Winodws XP? We have an application which downloads data from two sources, one of which uses UDP, the other TCP. The TCP portion of the download works fine but the portion downloaded via UDP slows down and eventually fails. I've been looking into QOS settings since this is related to streaming voice, but they have not worked. I've also attempted adjusting window sizes etc as per speedguide.net, but as those are specific to TCP, I do not expect them to make a difference. The TCP/UDP sources are located several hundred miles from us, and we are connected to them via two T1s. At first we thought maybe it was a network issue, but we've tried pulling the same data with NT machines and have had no problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Purging my inventory! Enough for everyone!

Still have any of this stuff?
  18. Greetings! Ok...I have an Exchange 2003 server running in Windows Server 2003 in my organization. It's acting as a typical Exchange server to XP client machines with Outlook. However, I also have POP and IMAP enabled. The server's DNS entry is "MAIL" for both incoming and outgoing mail. Therefore, mail.mydomain.com is the address used to get pointed to the Exchange server. Using Ximian Evolution, I'm unable to connect to both POP and IMAP. I tried with Outlook and all was OK. Anybody experience the same type of problem? The closest i've come to successfully being able to check mail with POP is by using NTLM/SPA authentication for both directions. It still doesn't work, but it at least does not error out, nor does it prompt me again for a password. Any thoughts?

    AX4SG-N

Anybody here have the Aopen AX4SG-N? If you have it, is anybody running SilentTek? If so, does anybody hear beeping when SilentTek turns the CPU fan off? If so, does anybody know how to disable that beeping? If so, how? It's annoying, and basically defeats the purpose of SilentTek.

    AX4SG-N

Thanks guys. I've actually done everything you suggested. I've looked all through the BIOS, and even updated it to see if I got more options. I looked around in SilentTek to disable the beeping and while some of the settings looked very promising, they didn't quite do what I wanted. Anyhoo, I'm just using it until i get a Zalman cooler. They make zero noise. Thanks for the responses.

    C# Programmers

Anybody on here good with C#? I'm working on a project here at home and I'm a bit stuck. It would be cool to have somebody to bounce ideas off of. Any takers? Basically what I'm trying to do right now is use one method for all database transactions. In this particular app it's all read-only so I'm using a datareader. However, I'm not sure how to (or if it's possible) to pass a data reader to a method and have it returned filled. I WAS able to do it with a dataset since it's disconnected, but it's too much overhead for my purpose. I would like to avoid repeating code over and over in many different methods and events if possible. If anybody has some examples of this it would be greatly appreciated. Currently here's what I'm working on. I don't like it, but it's as close to the above as I've been able to get: Code: private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs ea) { if(!this.IsPostBack) { SqlDataReader drResults; string strConn; string strSP; strConn = "********" //drResults.Clear(); try { using(SqlConnection objConn = new SqlConnection(strConn)) { objConn.Open(); //Fill Genre ComboBox strSP = "sp_Genres"; SqlCommand cmdSQL = new SqlCommand(strSP, objConn); drResults = cmdSQL.ExecuteReader(); cbxGenre.DataSource= drResults; cbxGenre.DataTextField = "fldGenre"; cbxGenre.DataBind(); //Fill CD ComboBox if (rdSwitch.Checked==true) { strSP = "sp_CDNamesPG"; } else { strSP = "sp_CDNamesAll"; } SqlCommand cmdSQL = new SqlCommand(strSP, objConn); drResults = cmdSQL.ExecuteReader(); cbxCDName.DataSource= drResults; cbxCDName.DataTextField = "fldCDName"; cbxCDName.DataBind(); objConn.Close(); } } catch(Exception eException) { txtTitleSearch.Text = "There were problems. " + eException; } } } The remaining problem with this is that with one of my combo boxes, if I select a different radio button, it needs to repopulate with different data. In this scenario all controls will repopulate, even though only one is needed. I could use some input.

    C# Programmers

Thanks for the reply. I know about the theory and how it's done in VB and C++, but I've not done these things in C#. For example, I'm looking for an answer to the question, "Can I pass/receive a datareader object to/from a function?". I'm assuming the answer is yes, but it may not be. The reason I ask that is if I create a class, for example, that handles DB queries I'll need to pass the results back to the calling logic. Either that, or pass objects requiring the data into the classes, which I'd really rather not do. Perhaps if I can't pass datareaders, I could dump a datareader into an array and pass that back. Hmmmm. Basically I was hoping in addition to finding some answer to this, to find somebody I could add to my IM buddy list to ask questions of, when the need arises. And yes, I've been looking all around. I've found some good info and it's slowly leading me to my answers. Just thought I'd try my luck here as well.

    Computer Case Recommendation

I'm puttin' together a new PC and need a case. I've always used stuff from Enlight, but I'm leaving my options open this time. Here are my requirements in order of importance (most important first) 1. Quiet 2. Layout 3. Quality Materials, "tight" feel 4. Looks 5. Durability I've always liked the traditional beige case, but I'm looking for something more interesting this time. If possible I'd like to keep it in the $70 - $100 range. Anybody have recommendations? If you could also include links that would be helpful.

    Computer Case Recommendation

Not happy at all with this case. 5.5 inch bays rattle whenever the cd rom spins cuz the drive rails don't fit tight... and noise from fans and hard drive seem to echo and therefore be made louder. since one of my requirements was a quiet case, i'm really not happy. however, i do like the way the case looks and the materials its made out of. too bad i bought it online and can't easily send it back. maybe i'll try though.

    Computer Case Recommendation

Well I got the case... it's beautiful, very roomy, and extremely sturdy. But it's pretty damn loud. I'm gonna play around with some SilentTek stuff to see if I can control any of the loudness.
