Ya know what would be nice... To be able to click on a "print" icon within any reply in a forum, and as a result, print that selected reply only. For example, right now I'm reading SHS's post: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=13895&highlight=slipstream If I wanted to print out this post by itself, I'd have to copy and paste it into Word or something, then print. It would be nice to just hit a "print" button within his post and have that partiular post print. Just a thought.

This worm only targets a vulnerability in IIS 4.0 and 5.0. If you are running WinXP, more than likely you're running the home version, or pro version... neither of which, to my understanding, have IIS included. You only need to download and install the patches on machines running IIS. This is gonna be neat.. muhaHAHAHAHAHA!! Curious to see what happens. Companies prolly aren't gonna have many problems... the problems are gonna be greatest with people at home who have IIS installed and don't know it, or have IIS installed but don't bother to manage it. Anyways, you could always try to install the patch just in case. I'd rather err on the side of caution. Also, if you are running PWS (Personal Web Server) on Win9x, or XP if it's available (I'm no XP guru yet).. i would look into that too. Not sure if PWS has the same vulnerability. Chow. BTW... congrats CLUTCH!!!

Yeah, actually I knew that too... I just thought it would be a nice little feature to add, if it's possible. It would be handy.

About the statement I made earlier... I would like to change it a little. A summary of links was put back at the top of the page, making it look more contained and professional. It looks a lot nicer now than it did that first day. Keep up the good work! I have been enjoying this forum/website for nearly 4 years now. And I hope that it always remains top notch!

Can anyone help me ? I am on a cable modem thru the cable is
Atreyu replied to imtim83's topic in Slack Space
If it makes ya feel any better bud, I'm paying $80/month for 1.5/384 DSL, which is usually the same speed of cable... which costs about half what I'm paying. Your speed may have decreased because of an increase in users on your "segment". Cable bandwidth is shared. Everybody in your neighborhood is using the same bandwidth as you.... and therefore the more that sign up, the slower it will get during peak times. DSL is a "dedicated" line, and therefore all the bandwidth is yours and yours alone. That's one reason it costs more. Take a look at Speedguide.net for further info on this stuff. -
I'll prolly do more than hang back. I'll prolly wait for BlackBomb, or whatever it's called now. I do not see any true benefits of going to XP yet, when Win2k is so darn sweet. I've tried two releases of WinXP and I have not liked it. Too much crap all over the place. You wanna change the speed of your mouse? Here, let's go through three wizards! Anyways, I would have to agree that all this court stuff with Microsoft is pathetic. Just today I received a free CD in the mail from AOL, offering me 1000 free hours. Wanna talk about taking advantage of power... let's talk AOL. Now I won't touch AO Hell with a 50 foot pole, not even if it was the last internet company on earth.. and never have I ever signed up for ANY AOL service besides IM. Even then, I did not submit my address or any other personal information. I can't remember the last time I got a free trial version of Windows in the mail for no apparent reason... let's see.. never? Anyways... perhaps those companies should realize that they probably would not even exist if it wasn't for Microsoft. And as far as that economic boom we had in the 90's... quit blaming Bill Clinton. He had nothing to do with it. It was all Bill Gates and Alan Greenspan. I am all for free-market open competition and I'm against monopolistic power, but some cases need to be looked at a bit differently. Microsoft put computers and the internet into American households like no company before. The implications of this proved enormous. Business sprung up like wildflowers, and companies couldn't hire enough employees. Truly, Microsoft connected the country's businesses with their respective customers like never before and as a result created a 24/7 business day. In the end... this BS about Microsoft needs to stop. Instead of griping about how they included Internet Explorer with Windows (just like BeOS, Linux, and QNX do), we should be thanking them for the opportunities they have presented for this country's economy. Imagine the 90's without Microsoft, and without any company who did what Microsoft did. Where would we be? Anyways... to heck with AOL and let's put Regan on the $10 bill. Later guys!

Theres a whole FAQ on their website with this and other answers... but to answer your question.. no... not yet. They are planning on having that functionality in the next release. Yu CAN send files via IRC on Trillian though.

Sorry, I'm gonna have to go with DosFreak on this one. I think it looked far better the other way. This way seems more chaotic and less professional looking, at least through my eyes. The forums on the other hand are sharp. The new format for the forums that was implemented in the last couple months is real slick.

I would have to agree senior clutch. This is one kewl program. I've got my IM, ICQ, and MSN accounts active on here and it treats it almost as if they are all part of one chatting program You can even see how many hotmail messages you have etc if you use that service. Plus tons of other features I've yet to discover. Definately go check it out. I've been waiting for this program for so long.

I've done this before with absolutely no problems. Just keep in mind, your RAM can only run as fast as your slowest stick. So even though you have pc133 sticks in there, if you have pc100 your pc133 are only gonna be able to run at 100 (or 112 in my overclocked case). Otherwise you should have no problems at all. You'd prolly see a greater improvement in performance with 400+ megs of mixed RAM than you would with 256 megs of pc133 RAM.

You can also try these nice little utilities from the olden days.. delpart and killboot. killboot kills the boot sector and renders your drive undreadable.. at least until you create a partition or run Windows setup, which both will write a new boot sector for ya. Good program to really start from scratch. All it is is a .com file that you run. Nuttin fancy about it. Delpart is a mean partition utility that will delete and create paritions with no regard as to what kind of partition they are, what kind of file system it is, or what size they are. Check them out. I'll put them on my webserver for you to download. (It's ok, they're free utilities). Download Delpart and Killboot here

Well which do you want to do? If you format you will lose boot.ini. You would then have to run the boot up repair option from the Win2k setup. To be honest with you, if you MUST continue using 98, I would install Win2k on the C: drive, using FAT32, then Wind98 on the other partition. I would do this since Win2k is your main OS. **note** This would not be good if you want to REALLY use Win2k and all it's security features.. since it relies on NTFS for all that. However if you do not want to do this... then simply booting into win2k, and deleting everything on your c: drive (or just formatting it), followed by a setup repair for the boot environment (win2k setup), you should be good to go. It's not pretty, but there's no "uninstall" option of an OS. It's either format, or try booting into the other one and deleting the old one. I have done this with Windows XP, however my setup was c:Win2k d:WinXP. When I was done with XP (which didnt take long cuz I'm not sure I like it yet), I simply booted into Win2k and deleted everything WinXP. Then I edited boot.ini to tell the computer that XP no longer existed. Since this works fine, it should also work fine for your situation. However the only problem you may face is the fact that on your c: drive (your bootable drive as of now) you have the OS that you want to delete. You could try this way, and if it screws things up... then format c:.. then run the Win2k repair utility in setup. Also you may want to ask yourself, are those games SO important that you would go through all this just for them? Personally, there have been 2 games I couldnt play on Win2k. Istead of installing Win98 just for them, I figured, I benefit more from having such a great OS and not being able to play 2 games, than to use a crappy OS and play those two games. But hey, to each their own. Thats all I can really tell ya. Have fun!

Shoot theres a couple ways. It sounds like you have Win98 on C: and Win2k on D: (or somewhere else). My first question is though... why are you gonna get rid of windows 98 only to install it again? But to answer your question, when I want to get rid of my OS, i simply format the drive it's on. I never lose anything important cuz all my data is on a different drive. Formatting is usually the best way. Just be careful... since you have windows 98 on your C: drive, formatting will likely screw up your ability to boot into Windows 2000. This can be fixed however by going into Win2k setup, selecting the repair option, and tell it to repair the boot environment. Another way, a bit more messy though... is to boot into Win2k, then just delete all windows 98 stuff, leaving Boot.ini and changing it so that Windows98 is not an option on the boot menu. Sounds like youre gonna have a funky setup though. C: empty D: Windows 2k... where are you gonna put Windows 98 again? Why not just leave it? Seems to make more sense to me.

Supposedly every service pack includes the fixes from the previous services packs. The most important service pack to install is 4. 5 and 6 are nice and I would install them, but at minimum 4 is the one needed to perform installs of much of today's hardware drivers, and software. So my advice is to install 4+. You also may want to download IE 4... install that with all those web features (like quick launch toolbar etc), then upgrade to IE 5.5. This way you get the most current NT4 possible. Thats what I do when I install it. me: install nt4 install sp4 install sp5 install sp6 install IE 4 --> web content install IE 5.5 tweak the hell out of it install all my software and get the thing ready to go. i may be forgetting tons of things because it's been a long time... but bare bones, thats the stuff i do first.

I'm still laughing at the Google post. That was one of the funniest things I've seen on this board in a long time!! Way to go Eddie!

To be honest with you, it sounds like youre hard drive is dying. I would back that sucker up immediately and replace it. One of my hard drives in my web server was doing exactly what you describe.. fortunately with my setup, my hard drive coulda caught fire and I wouldnt have lost any data. Anyways, hard drives **should** really only have that beautiful little high pitched hum as they spin, and the normal scratches as they read and write. When you start hearing clunking sounds, spin-ups and stops, and you are getting disk error messages... well... I would say it's time to replace. The spin-ups **could** be a result of your power settings.. if you have the hard drives set to "turn off" after a certain amount of time. Have you tried that?

ahh.. gotcha! **wink** **wink** When do you have to know by?

Hey, remember Sandoval? Well that's me! I ran into problems when I changed my name to Atreyu the first time, and could do basically nothing on NTCompatible. So I had my old profile deleted, and signed up from scratch. I miss all my posts, but hey.. I'm just glad to be back! So that's the story... that's who I am. And with college out of the way, no wife, and no kids (as of yet), I should have plenty of time to answer any questions that I can. I'm best with NT(obviously),programming (COBOL, ASP, VBScript, Javascript, C++, HTML, SQL, VBA,and some plain ole VB), networking(web-servers, database, exchange, ethernet, token-ring, ARC-net, routing, switching, hubs) I'm also very good with the software architecture with which you manage or perform the above.. example: "ASP" --> I also know VisualInterdev and FrontPage extensions, "ethernet" --> cables, cards, hardware, management software, etc. Thanks to Phillip for helping me to get everything working again. See you guys around!

Hey, I live right down the street from where you're talking about, and I am thinking about going to your party! I'm curious though, and this may be a stupid question... but what do you do at a LAN party? I've never gone to one before.. you just hook everybody up and play multiplayer games?
