    RC2 MSDN bad files?

Anyone know how to check to see the files are valid? First time I downloaded the self extracting files it had a corrupt setup.exe. When I downloaded the ISO and then the install had alsoa few corrupt files. Bootok.exe, and the asms under i386. I am attempting to download from MSDN again... anyone else have problem?

Best Motherboard for AMD Athlon if possible

If you want stability just go with the 845 intel board that supports ddr memory. If you want to get an amd/via board from what I hear as long as you have the latest drivers and bios the system runs better than intel cpu's at the same Mhz.

    Removing / Reinstalling Detonator drivers

I just run the setup with the older drivers still installed and have had no problems. I've been doing it since the first det. release. I've had a TNT, TNT2 Ultra, Geforce 2 GTS, Geforce2 Ti, and a Geforce 3 ti 200. Most companies recommend installing the default driver or VGA device, but I never have noticed a difference. Also I don't download the latest and greatest driver leaks, I wait until nvidia releases new ones on their site. A few more frame per seconds in quake3 or a few hundred points in 3dmark isn't worth the problems I have run in to on games in the past.

    DX8.1b for Windows XP?

On Windows XP, you will need to download the latest Service Pack, or install the corresponding hot fixes. Please see Knowledge Base Articles Q321178, Q307207, and Q318507, for more information.

    Memory Question

I've seen other peoples systems do the same thing, dropping anywhere from 256k to 8mb (usually caused by on board video, etc.), but I know the answer won't change your life, 548k is nothing.
  9. I have never fried an Intel CPU. I ran even an over clocked celeron 333a w/o a fan or heat sink for hours, because I couldnt find one that fit. Installed windows 98, downloaded updated BIOS to reconize my P3 cpu heh. I let it run for awhile, even ran benchmarks, I didn't have any temp gauges or anything, but the cpu was hot.

Win 9x is great - No crashes at all.

had problems at first but 98se is stable for me. I can have it run for days. No slow down, dont ever use swap file (512mb of ram), I have office xp, aoe2, everquest, media player, ie 6, msn messenger, half life, and more. I keep my software/drivers up to date at updates.com and found my previous errors were due to bad drivers. I ran win2k from dec 99 until XP went final(almost 2 years), but I found 98se to solve my gaming needs. Not that I couldnt get games to run in 2k, just that they run a lot better in 98se.

Need advice on OS for new laptop

At my work all our sales persons use to have 98 on their notebooks, we've pgraded them to 2000 and have had great results. They hook them to all sorts of networks while out in the field, so I would hope you would'nt have any problem.

    Windows XP for MSDN Subscribers

RTM went to beta testers, but I think Sep21st is also the day it goes to OEM's, I think it's to prevent new machines going out with the full version too early.

Are previous beta versions of XP upgradable to Final Release

That is the same boot drive since having a pentium 75Mhz running DOS, then upgraded. All OS's had software and probably hardware added. I've changed motherboards,CPU, video, network, audio, etc over the years and it works fine.

Are previous beta versions of XP upgradable to Final Release

Again, I think some people just don't have good luck or know what they are doing when it comes to upgrading. Secondary machine, Has been up for 3 weeks w/o reboot DOS-> Win95 -> Win98 -> Win98se -> Windows2000 -> WinXP RC1 -> WInXP RC2 Main machine, Win NT 3.51 -> NT 4.0 -> NT 5 beta 2 -> Windows 2000 -> WinXP RC1 -> WinXP RC2 I have no blue screens, plenty of drive space, no hardware that malfunctions, my benchmarks are usually equal or better than similar systems, I have lot's of software and different types of hardware. I have cleaned out some ol programs I don't use/need, and have kept me registry in check. It takes minimal effort. I do plan on upgrading to Win XP final on the same machine.

Couple questions to bring me up to date

I would wait until the 2nd gen of the P4's come out. They will have a new chipset (intel has hinted at a ddr config). They will break 2Ghz and probably start laying into AMD. AMD at this point is having a hard time gaining market share. Even if the flood gates did open at this point AMD would not be prepared to even meet the damend of gaining 10% of the market. I'm not saying AMD has bad chips. The fastest Athlon's beat or match the higher clocked/priced P4's, but the problem is Intel is going to sell more to the mainstream market with the P4 than AMD is with it's followers. AMD has a high % of the gaming market, but is not high on the low end server, workstations, and home machines.
