The ones that XP detected worked fine for me.

I'm very happy with my Muse XL sound card and it is only 29 USD compared to my second choice 79 USD Santa Cruz

because VNC is open source. I'm not a programmer and I've been able to hack it with even basic knowledge of C.

Well you can try writing/upgrading an OS, and try and not to break a few of the thousands of apps/plug ins that run on it. I think Microsoft has chnaged so much in American and other countries lives for the better. They have opened so many jobs up for business, programming, and even personal life duties. I shudder at the thought is Microsoft didn't evolve. We might all be running Apple's *~cringes~* or even worse IBM's OS/2. Maybe even get stuck in Open VMS or a lovely bastardised UNIX clone. I love what Microsoft has driven in to our lives and in to our economy, yet we act like they are evil. Our Gov't is trying to punish true Success, and Bill Gates filling out a dream life. Why don't they go after AOL? I never have received a hundred CD's from Microsoft shoving their lowsy product down my throat. So their latest stuff breaks some one elses product? They wouldn't have a product if it wasn't for Microsft, deal with it... in a nice way

What a big interface you've got!
FadedTimes replied to shinglung's topic in Customization & Tweaking
you guys can turn off most of the new GUI and revert to a win2k look. I actualy like the new GUI and don't find it too big. I run 1600x1200 at work and 1280x1024 at home. Maybe you should try modifying the title bar size, scroll bar, and menu. Make sure you don't have large fonts enabled? I don't know really what else to say to help. -
Will ATA 133 be much faster than ATA 66 or ATA 100? What doe
FadedTimes replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
ATA 133 is only Maxtor. I believe IBM and Intel have already rejected it, since most drives never get over the 66mb spec. Most of all it is because of the PCI bus itself and spindle speed, even 64bit PCI can't sustain IDE 100mb. I have a 5400rpm ATA 100, and my 7200 rpm ATA 66 beats it, barely. I do a have a 7200rpm ATA 100 drive that flies, and can get over 66mb mark on my Promise controller, but when running apps, doing large disk transfers, playing games, compiling, encoding, I don't notice the difference. I did notice going from ATA 33 to ATA 66, but not much since. My next machine after the 2nd gen P4's come out will just have SCSI. -
You can also run power strip, but I just ran the refresh rate fix exe with win2k comp.

look please keep the smart *** comments to yourself. He asked a good question, and seeked out answers, I know I'm not the best typer or have the best spelling and use of english sentence structure, but give the guy a break. You steer people away like that. Sorry, but can the admin's just erase what he wrote? and erase what i wrote after that.

ANyone know where to get these 20.80 drivers?
-
I believe that is for intel chipset controllers, that can do ATA 66. Also SP2 ads it for Intel chipsets that can do ATA 100. I have a Promise ctroller, and I get ATA 100 preformance, in win2k with or with out the reg setting nor SP2. From what I've heard the card automatically tells the OS in the driver to run at a certain speed. Should be the same for other controllers. In device manager if it shows your hard drives as SCSI the drivers/controller are taking care of the speed. If you drives show up as IDE, you would need to enable the hack to get ATA 66.

It is just a matter of choice, some people have bad hardware upgrades, some have bad luck even upgrading internet explorer, but over all there is no right or wrong way. If you know what you are doing. then you won't have a problem upgrading anything.
-
I also get a few pixels change color on the desktop after using the new start menu. The thig is still buggy and I hope it gets solved by RTM.

I'm sorry, but upgrading is not as bad as everyone says it is. I went from dos 6.22 windows 95 windows 98 windows 98se windows 2000 windows xp rc1 windows xp rc2 That is my upgrade path I did earlier this month. My second machine has gone through a similar upgrade path. I have had 0 problems, and performance and hard drive space has not been a problem either. Registry settings can be cleaned and old exe's can be deleted. To answer the thread though you can upgrade windows 2000 Pro to win xp Pro. 98/Me can be upgraded to either xp home or Pro. My workstation at work has gone from NT 3.51 (dual booted with OS/2) NT 4.0 Windows 2000 Windows XP RC1 Windows XP RC2 again with no problems.

mine is at 200 in XP RC2 Microsoft intellieye explorer

is it auto detecting it's speed? Or is it set to 10M or 100M p/s? My old 3com use to do that when I had it set to auto detect speed. Even worse when I had an auto sensing hub, would take like 5min sometimes to work.

FadedTimes replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
All a3d based cards in win2k/winxp should use the default ones installed. There isn't anything else since Aureal went out of business. I have a Monetego I -
DirectX in NT only goes up to 3 (service Pack 3+) DirectPlay goes up to 6 (service Pack 4+) Now I know some Directx 5 games would play under NT but I haven't had any game that required directx 6,7 or 8 play under NT at all, unless they had alternative rendering modes. Which use OpenGL for rendering and sound/input goes down to directx 3. That's why Quake(1/2/3) engines will run under NT.

How is it a bad idea?
-
Sorry, but Plus! can't add any more things a shareware or tweak program can do. Microsoft made money off of Plus 95 and 98 yet half the stuff was just registry tweaks and some extra icon/sound/wallpapaer's

Go to the device manager, goto Mice and go into the properties of your mouse. Go to the advance settings tab and there it is PS/2 rate. Works in windows 2000 as well.
-
I had to unplug all other usb devices... So my mouse and keyboard are back to PS/2 1. I dont have the joystick plugged in 2. unplug my web cam (or other crap) 3. Plug in sidewinder.. verify it works. 4. plug web cam in again. (or other crap) verify joy still works. If I reboot or use the web cam (or other crap)I have to do the same thing to get it working again.

you try the win2k drivers?

Reformatting soon; switch to NTFS or keep FAT32?
FadedTimes replied to GTwannabe's topic in Hardware
Microsoft recommends on drives/partitions larger than 20gig for NTFS, as they say it scales better than FAT32 as the drives gets larger. FAT32 might take a hit preformance wise, but I can't compare because I always use NTFS heh -
I have a p3 800e (100mhz) and I can't get past 896Mhz will post at 1ghz but windows crashes. I've ran 124mhz bus before so I know my components and ram are p to snuff, just the cpu won't do it.

FadedTimes replied to Trance's topic in Customization & Tweaking
When Windows 2000 Setup starts again, press F7 when you see the "Press F6 if you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver" screen http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q256/8/41.ASP
