I'm not familiar enough with black ice.

check to see if service is running, and then see if you ahve reaying enabled. Anyone else have any other ideas? You have any firewall or filtering stuff going on?

I never use ACPI because of a lot of reasons

What tip'd me off was that it was fine at the logon screen, but not with your user, which means one of the mouse settings on the user is set to slow.

I have a similar setup than yours. What is your setting in quake3? resolution color debth? Any changes on the video card via the control panael like FSAA and antiospotic filtering? I can do a bunch of time deom's but would rather set everything like yours and do it.

But I thought TNT/2/x was dropped from 12.41? Well I haven't seen the benchmarks between 98 vs 2k with the tnt series. I know I took speed hit when I had a tnt2 ultra and went from 98 to 2k, but that was on some old drivers.

Every AMD system seems to run hot for me, the main reason I don't seem them as much in any servers I've ordered/built. Now with SMP they better cope with the heat. Now performance should be good cpu/chipset/memory bus. Just as long as there are no conflicts with hardware amd will have a good low end server.

sounds like it's going into stand by mode instaed of turning off. You change any of your pwer settings? like wake on LAN/ring, etc?

use smtp with iis, and allow relaying. Then you let your iis machine send email. Just be careful though, if you leave the port open with out a firewall some one can spam through it.

try adjusting the acceleration or mouse speed. or create another user and login with them and see if it happens to them.

DOS 6.2->Win95->Win98->Win98se->Win2k->WinXP RC1 from dos to win2k happened all in one day about a week ago, the XP happened 2 days ago. Funny to see some programs still around from 95 and 98. I've used Win2k as my main OS since december 99.

Anyone having luck with the highpoint 366 controller in win2
FadedTimes replied to rgodart's topic in Hardware
I've heard that Promise addd on cards preform better than High point. I personally have a Promise PCI ata 100 card and have a 40gig maxtor ata 100 5400rpm and get just over ATA 66 results in Sisoft sandra and no crashes in win2k/winXP. I think if my maxtor was 7200 rpm I would get close to the ata 100 results in sisoft since my western digital 20gig ata 100 is 7200 rpm and exceeds sisofts ata 100 benchmark. -

Make sure you have SP2 installed which has support for UDMA (ATA100), but I thought it should be enabled on teh card itself. In device manager does it say your drives are SCSI or IDE? If they say IDE the SP should work if it says they are SCSI (even if they are really IDE) I would suspect it is the drivers. -
The ones the OS recommends are very good. Just make sure you're drive is defragged. I usually make mine at what it says and have the max double that, because I do a lot of heavy memory load intensive programs.

I've had hard drives fail at home and for work's sake. Overall I think all manufactures have some bad drives, but sell millions of good drives. I've had bad and good of all sorts of brands, some not even around anymore. Earlier some one said this is opinion, and it always will be. It happens at different levels of computing. Which video card is the best, what cpu is the best, what ram is the best, etc.

I have had great luck and speed out of maxtor drives. My main system has a 40gig ata 100 5400rpm and a 15gig ata 66 7200. My wife's mahcine has my old 4.3 gig ata 33 maxtor and then I have an anciet maxtor that is 512mb that still works.

If you want a lot of mp3, divx, iso files on your drive then go with the 100gig. I have 40gig and 15gig and I'm going to fill them by the end of the year at the rate I'm going. I use to have a 4.3 gig I thought I would never fill *~laughs~*

I have a Maxtor (Promise) Aultra ATA 100 controller and I'm getting preformance no better than UDMA 33 (XP pro RC1 2505). I have a ATA 100 5400rpm drive on IDE1 of the card and a ATA 66 7200rpm drive on IDE2. In windows 2000 I would get better than ATA UDMA 66 preformance, but now in XP it is slow. When I installed XP it detected my card as a Promise IDE controller and I thought maybe it was just bad Microsoft drivers, so I installed Maxtor's drivers and got the same results in tests under Sisoft sandra 2001te pro. I also noticed it when just copying files from one drive to the other. My next step is to try Promise's drivers, but I think it is maybe the OS. I have an Abit BH6 (Intel BX) PIII 900Mhz 384mb ram. I had great preformance in win2k and winXP is not going to well.
