Thanks a lot for your info! i just wanna make sure the via nightmare won't happen to my next computer again. one more question, although mobo like Abit KG7Raid uses AMD760 as northbridge, the southbridge is still VIA! should i completely stay out of VIA? what should i do? my specs: Abit KT7A 3C bios 1ghz non-oced athlon hercules geforce2 gts 12.41 pci4: sblive! (drive date is 5/5/2000) any update? pci5: linysis nic pci6: netgear nic (yes i need2)

I had extreme difficulty with my computer when I have an Abit KT7A (KT133A chipset) and 1GHz Athlon running Windows2000. Games used to freeze all the time, buffer underrun on plextor burner, and sound crackling on sblive! Finally, I fixed 3dgames (AMD registry patch and VIA4in1 AGP) and burner problem (changing from DMA to PIO) STill can't fix sblive! and santa cruz had the same result Now, I'm planning on giving VIA a final try... Anyone of you have luck with the new VIA KT266 chipset? ANY problems like I mentioned above? or would you rather suggest AMD760/761 chipset? The Intel i850 or i815 has great stability but the price/performance simply cannot compare to AMD's. Anyone has suggestion?

I have similar problems too! but the winxp built in roxio burning software works for me... nero 5.5 will work once in a while...not totally working =( (freezes at 6% everytime) if the xp built in software is supplied by roxio, i wonder if roxio easy cd creator 5.02 platinum will work for xp? anyone tried? in windows2000, my burner does not work all the time neither, probably had something to do with my amd mobo w/ via souothbridge in winxp it works without via 4in1 driver defbringer: did u have similar problems w/ burning cd before? what programs have u tried? what's your system specs?

what chipset of motherboard are you using? if it's via, then you should dl the 4in1 drivers, because it's known to have transfer problem w/ bad ms IDE drivers -
media player won't even play .mov on a webpage with an embedded movie quick time doesn't work w/ IE6 neither
-
do you even need 4in1 drivers in win xp? if so, which parts of the 4in1 drivers do i need? where do i find registry forcing DMA mode?

Here's my problem: My Maxtor harddrive (15gb 7200rpm ata66) is running in PIO mode, although auto detection and DMA if avaiable is enabled. Running WINXP RC1 Here's my system specs: AMD Athlon 1000mhz (not overclocked) 384mb ram Abit KT7A w/ latest 3C BIOS Geforce2 GTS SBLive! 2 NICs Primary IDE: Master: IBM 30gb hdd 7200rpm ata100 (UltraDMA Mode5) Slave: Maxtor 15gb hdd 7200rpm ata66 (PIO Mode)<-problem Secondary IDE: Pioneer 16X DVDROM (UltraDMA Mode2) Plextor 8432 CDRW (MultiWord DMA Mode2) whats this?! perhaps this is another VIA chipset issue? it used to be ultraDMA in win2k one more thing: CDROM and DVDROM may suddenly stop working, and a restart would fix the problem. anyone else with similar spec has these two problems?

I've been using Windows 2000 and XP w/ FAT32 partition and I heard that NTFS is a much better file system for NT kernel. I know that if I use a Win98 boot disc to boot the machine, it will not see the NTFS partition, AND the next FAT32 partition will replace the NTFS drive letter. This causes a big mess in my system. So here's a question for you experts. 1. If I convert my drives to NTFS, how can I go to a pure DOS environment, say I need to flash BIOS for my motherboard? 2. And how do you format or fdisk on NTFS partition? This is completely different from FAT32 3. any NTFS tools out there that you recommend? thanks for replying in advance
