  1. Mediaplayer has been playing certain clips upside down. I have no idea want makes it do this. It seems to do it at random and is not a CODEC specific thing. I hope MS reads these forums.

    NTFS to FAT32?

Is it possible to convert an NTFS partition to FAT32? I installed XP as NTFS, but now I cannot get any folders shared on my network. Even though I have permissions set to "everyone", my other XP computer cannot gain access to the supposedly publically shared folder I made.

    Where it NetBeui at?!?!

So I am trying to do the standard local networking with my two machines. One is Win2K, the other is XP RC1. Now, I usually use NetBeui as it is fairly secure as it is a private connection between two computers and has nothing to do with the internet. However XP seems to be missing this protocal!! All I can do is XP's custom "Home Networking" crap. And when I put my XP disc in my Win2K box, as it says to complete the networking, it tells me this only works with 95, 98, 98SE, ME, and XP!!!! WTF!!?? So currently I have no way to networking my 2K and XP machines. Clues?
  4. Anyone have any clues on where to get some beta LinkSYS wireless drivers at? I cannot believe XP doesn't ship with Linksys wireless driver. I cannotbelieve LinkSys doesn't have drivers, beta even, on there site!

    Linksys Wireless 802.11b drivers??

Hmm, well mine are the linksys brand. WPC11 and WAP11. They don't work. The 2000 drives do install and seem to function, but XP will not see the nic as a functional device(can't get an IP for it). Even after I got the SSID working. And the utility that comes with the wirelss PCMCIA card bluescreens XP.

    NTFS to FAT32?

Got it, thanks for the help.

    Linksys Wireless 802.11b drivers??

That's okay. I did email LinkSYS and they told me they won't do anything until XP is released. Which is crap since XP is in RC status! "Release Canidate", duh. Heh. I don't want you hunting though your computer for me. Thanks though.

    Linksys Wireless 802.11b drivers??

Crap, yeah mine is the WPC11. Although the should be doing the same things. Are you running the LinkSYS Utility? Or did you just install the adaptor and it runs? Are you using it as a wireless adaptor? I undertsand it's USB, but is it's networking connection wireless? Thanks.
  9. You all have listed great reasons for and against. However, here are the simple facts. NetBeui *is* more secure than TCP/IP Why? Because when unbound from TCP/IP, as it should be, it is completely transparent to the internet. Your shares on your network will *only* be seen on *your* local network. You will *never* seem them on the internet as they do not exist in that pipeline. Combine that will killing Netbios over TCP/IP and your networking is virtually invisible. And that's even without a firewall. I find it odd that MS has killed it in favor of TCP/IP for local networking. Which, it's own wizard tells you, is an unsecure way to build a home network. That you better use a firewall! DUH! That's why you use NetBeui!

    The simple FACTS about Netbeui

Thanks for the tips. I am using IPX for printer and file sharing and TCP/IP for internet access. File and Printer sharing are bound only to IPX. So those shares should be fairly "off" of the i-net for public viewing. And my internet provider doesn't use IPX at all. Just TCP/IP. So no one in my neighborhood(real one) should be able to peek inside my network.

    The simple FACTS about Netbeui

My provider spits out IP's from it's domain. Which is 24.234.xxx.xxx The third number(gateway locator) and forth number(identifier) are random. They get fed from teh DHCP server. So they are public numbers. And technically anyone could scan to find an availible one and use it! But they find that out pretty quickly. So I am thinking I should use IPX, but only fro my local networking and shares. I will bind file sharing to IPX only. For interent acces I will use TCP/IP as I always have. I would basically replace NetBeui with IPX. That should work? Now for my other issue. Why are neither machines seeing my workgroup? I have both XP boxes configured for TCP/IP currently and on the same workgroup. Yet nothing shows up, not even the local computers shares! How is that even possible? I am referring to the "Computer Near Me" area.

    Linksys Wireless 802.11b drivers??

So you have a a LinkSYS wireless card? Is it working as a wireless card? Or are you using it as a standard wired NIC. My card, specifically, is the wireless PCMCIA card. It talks with the wireless LinkSYS HUB. The drivers for the NIC do seem to work. But WinXP will not work with it. It keeps saying, "cannot get IP address".

    The simple FACTS about Netbeui

You are convincing me, but I am still worried. Here is my setup... Cable modem 10/100 Switch Two computers and a printer Both computers connect to the i-net through the switch Both computers are always on. Both computers are using DHCP from the cable modem provider No firewall, no NAT. NAT not needed because Cable modem company provides up to 8 DHCP allocated users per modem. NetBios is diabled, Netbeui being used for local networking. Computers have shared folder and printer sharing going on. These are setup through Netbeui only and Client for MS Network and File and Printer Sharing are only bound to NetBeui. Can I use something else with XP to accomplish the above? And How? IPX and TCP/IP maybe? I prefer not to have to run a firewall.

    NetBEUI support in Windows XP

  15. Man, I cannot get networking working! I can get on the net and what not. But I cannot get my two XP machines to see each other. Nor can I get my XP machine to see my Win2K machine! They call this an RC release?? My workgoup doesn't show up, and my shares do not show up. What the hell is going on?

Help! HDD running PIO mode =(

Me too. I have an INTEL based board. My DVD-ROM is running in Ultra DMA Mode 2, but my DMA66 Harddrive is running in PIO! Under Win2K both run at the proper DMA Mode 2...mode. Hmmmmm.

    Where it NetBeui at?!?!

No Netbeui anywhere. Plus they don't have any mentioning of connecting a Win2K machine ti a WinXP network. What the SUCK is that all about! So as it stands, I still cannot get my Win2K machined networked to my WinXP. Has ANYONE been able to do this?

    Where it NetBeui at?!?!

Thanks for the tip. How do you turn off that simple networking? As for the add components part, I assume that similar to 2K's way of doing it? Thanks.

    winxp =unmountable_boot_volume

I am betting you are getting this because XP does not have a valid driver for your Harddrive controller. Are you running any of these? Custom IDE card RAID card SCSI card If so, temporarily attach your main harddrive(unless a RAID array) to your motherboard controller and try and boot up. If you already are doing that, then XP doesn't have the right driver for your controller. A bummer. I had this happen to me when I upgraded to Service Pack 2 with my Tyan motherboard. SP2 overwrote VIA's IDE driver and it caused the "INVALID BOOT DEVICE" error. I had to do a Windows repair, re-install SP2, NOT REBOOT, then install the VIA driver again, then let it reboot. Ugh....

    Linksys Wireless 802.11b drivers??

Damn "enter" key!!! Hit it on accident and my message posted before I was done. You should make a conformation or something. That can be dangerous! ANYWAY.. I did try the LinkSYS Win2K drivers and although they do install and the card wireless card does communicate to the wireless hub, XP can't validate any connection with it. And when you try to run LinkSYS's utility, XP BLUESCREENS. Hey, I thought it wasn't supposed to do that anymore?
