Morning all. I was just wondering if any of you were in the same boat as me where you've downloaded all of SP1 for Win2K3 and are having high nautious churning going on in your tummies? Well, I've got it and don't know what to do with it. I've called all the various third party software vendors that are associated with my various Windows 2003 servers and have mostly given the clear okay with a couple of exceptions. My only concerns at this point are incompatibility with ms services such as server network shares, print shares, dns, wins and serverside scripting in AD for client. I heard some rumours that SP1 possibly affects network shares, any truth to this? Thanks all in advance either way.

Morning all. Well, stupid me did a Microsoft critical update to my Quark License Server yesterday which sits on top of a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise box. The client systems had now updates done to them. After I did the updates Quark Licensing no longer worked off of port 1024. I'm assuming Microsoft has decided to now use that port for their own purposes. I called into Quark tech to get their read and I was right as we changed port setup for server and one client and that worked. But I have over a couple of hundred of client systems to change along with firewall edits. Can anyone tell me what Microsoft has done with port 1024 and if I really need the service that Microsoft has issued for that port. If I don't need it then how do I kill it from using that port. Happy Labaour Day Weekend y'all!!! Just wanted to point out an odd occurrence in the Windows Firewall that now comes w/SP2. I've noticed that if you have added all the programs that you want to have an exception to the Firewall list, that it disappears when you join the system to a domain. Can anyone tell me how I can prevent the execeptions list going back to it's default settings after joining to the domain? Is there a way at least in the registry or otherwise to backup the exceptions list? I only ask because the multiple systems I look after have multiple apps that require to be on the Windows Firewall exceptions list that are duplicate on all the systems. Pretty much a pain in the a$$ to re-add to the exceptions list for every machine every time I choose to re-ghost and rejoin them all to the domain again. Thanks in advance all.

Hi Melis. I had the same issues with one of my systems. I'm gonna take a guess and say that your running an old Geforce 2MX series vid card? Or maybe some other type of old video hardware. Anyways to say the least I had to reload from scratch back to SP1. Something about SP2 that has issues with the older vid cards. Good luck at trying to get into your safe mode. I had no luck at all with that.

Morning all. I know this may not be a good area to post this but I'm somewhat desperate and want to know how I can accomplish what I need to do. So here goes, I had a Windows 2000 Adv. Svr. doing AppleTalk Routing using four seperate NICs for four different subnets. It handled all the cards excellently allowing Apple Zone Talking with single Seeding to be done on one of the NICs but allowed the other subsequent NICs to join to the zone. Due to Windows 2000 Adv Svr security compromises and new software compatibility I was forced to update from scratch to Windows 2003 Ent Svr. After the install and setup I realized that the AppleTalk Routing had slightly changed where the built-in Microsoft AppleRouting no longer allowed Apple Zone Talk recognition of single Apple Route Seeding for all of the NICs at once. Now only one NIC can is designated to see a Seeded Apple Talk Zone which means the other subnets held on the other NICs can no longer become part of it at the same time. One NIC can hold the Zone at a time. Can anyone tell me if there is a patch or a fix for this? If there isn't a fix, I'd also appreciate a third-party solution to this as well so long as I can add it on top of Windows 2003. I'm pretty much stuck with Windows 2003 and can't go back. And yes, I can't get rid of the AppleTalk either as I have clients using legacy apps which depend on the AppleTalk. Thanks in advance all.

Thanks for the response back Adamvjackson. Did you mean the GP on the AD itself or the local GP? And if so, where in the GP would you find the option to keep the exceptions list or prepare a template for it? Thanks again.

I created roaming user accounts a while back in July for some clients which are "managed" so that they can't change the settings and now a couple of the accounts seem to get an error when they login. It reads as "Could not start unregmp2.exe" and then switches to a "Now creating a report for unregmp2.exe". What baffles me is that this error does not show up on every system they login to and the other roaming accouts are fine. Anybody heard of this? Thanks in advance.

I've only had SP2 for a day but I get feeling from the four systems I've loaded it on that they seem to respond slower when launching apps or just browsing around. Is it my imagination or is SP2 an XP chugger? I have no use of the improved firewall service and I think that the Windows Update Software updater isn't all it's cracked up to be so I've turned both of them off. Haven't tested the supposedly improved WiFi but the Bluetooth seems the same. Can anyone tell me what the hell MS did in SP2 to chugg my systems? I would greatly appreciate any advice on improving performance with SP2 installed keeping in mind I've turned off a lot of default services already as I either don't use them or find them to be a security risk. Morning all. Sorry, I forgot to respond. Clutch was right (at least in my case). I did a reinstallation this past Friday of WinXP w/SP2 slipstreamed along with loading all my apps (4 hours straight). Anyways my systems seem to be a lot faster now. It has to do with something about SP2 not liking certain processes occurring during installation. So your best option is to just make an integrated slipstream cd of SP2, bite the bullet and reinstall clean. Thanks Clutch.

Morning all. To say the least my DC has been compromised again. I've setup a Windows 2000 Adv. Server with AD and secured it with TCP port filtering along with a tightened policy setup where the user is not even allowed to "right mouse button click" on the domain. But whoever the bugger is, has been able to hack and give the ability to add a workstation to the domain with any user account on the AD. So long as the person is a user on the AD they can join any system to the domain. However, they still do not have access to the AD Users and Computers app to have delegation over my AD. It's most likely I was hacked from a node outside of my segment of network within my company as I do not have a firewall in place yet to protect my segment of network. So far it seems that joining systems to the domain is the extent of the damage. I've checked policy settings and built-in account groups to see if anything had been tampered with (eg. any users added to any of the Admin groups) and came up with nothing. Can anyone tell me anywhere else I can look to see who has been given delegation or permission to add a workstation to the domain keeping in mind that I've already checked the default domain policy. And also a solution to prevent the joining of a system from unauthorized user accounts. Thanks in advance either way.

Morning all. I know, I know, why am I dealing with Macs. Well, Apple, to say the least has their foothold in a niche market where for the media industry they are king. That being said I have some macs running on my Win2K/Win2K3 network and have not had the time to adjust my Schema containers in order to accomodate the Macs from authenticating directly against my AD through my Mac OS 10.x server. My issue lies with creating "Drop Box" folders on my Win2K server and having the Macs understand just the "write" permission. I've tried everything from just selecting the "write" permission check box alone to giving modified and full permissions and then denying them "read" in the sub-permissions sets under "advanced." I set it up awhile back where the drop boxes were successful on the Mac (so I know it is possible), but stoopid me, I did not bother at the time to add it in my knowledge base as to how I did it. I'd much appreciate the refresher. Thanks to all in advance as always.

Morning all. I've got people on my 2003 AD sharing their accounts when they shouldn't be. So in short, how do I prevent these a**hole* from logging in multiple times with their logins which they have shared? I remember in Win2K in the local policy settings your were able to do this by selecting that feature but I've noticed it no longer exists in the same area for 2003. Can anyone tell me where it's moved or if it still exists. Thanks in advance as always.

You're right on your first guess. I am using AppleTalk (Macintosh services running on Windows server) in order to setup a file share server for both a Windows 2000/XP and MacOS 9.x/10.x network. I've setup SAMBA as well in testing awhile back as well and whole heartedly agree it works great handling Windows file shares from a MacOS 10.x client. But I get into trouble using it on a MacOS 9.x client (which I'm stuck with because of hardware restrictions). What I'm trying to do is to create a secure file share on the Windows server using AppleTalk (along with UAM5), which MacOS 9.x understands, for the client along with a "Drop" Folder which colleagues of him/her could use in order to drop items in without changing the contents of the folder after their items have been dropped in. LOL, so in short yes, I am trying "to create a directory on the server, manage it from the server, and then allow for write only (to protect doc confidentiality between the clients)." AppleTalk is pretty good at the basic top level permissions such as read, modify and full control. Other than that if you try to choose just "write" on the top level set of permissions, the share fails as will indicate on the Mac client (both OS's) that "you do not have enough permissions to modify this folder" when you try to save to the drop box folder. I've tried other possible combinations of the top level permissions along with the sub-sets using the "deny" on some choices as well to no avail. I remember I did have some sort of combination of permissions set that worked but for the life of me I can't remember. I would appreciate greatly if someone had that combination. I would promise to write it down this time. Btw, I have both the new full retail Panther client and server. AD works seemlessly as Apple promised. I just wish I had the hardware for all my clients to be able to run it. Oh, to be in a perfect world where management would buy new hardware at the drop of a hat. Thank you Clutch for the response. Hmmm... If you're seeing the connention ICON actually disappear from PC2 and PC3, you may want to check if your switch is the problem (either not getting enough power or possibly faulty). The reason I suggest this is because if you're seeing the Connection ICON disappear it means that no power period is reaching it from the Hub or switch itself. If you have a full functioning spare then I would suggest using it for awhile and see if the same things occurs. If you don't have a spare then get hold of a twisted pair patch chord and just go directly from PC1 (ICS router) to just one of either PC2 or PC3 and see if the connection drops. If it doesn't then you know the problem lies somewhere with your switch/hub. Hope that helps

Morning all. I finished setting up my Windows 2003 Ent. Svr with AD. Everything went well with DNS setup prior to DCPROMO along with DCPROMO itself having no conflicts with DNS. I also did the AD intergration with my primary DNS zone which went well without a hitch. I ran into problems when I went into my AD and tried to get into the Group Policy settings. Every time I try to get into the GP tab I get an error popup informing me that the domain controller could not be found and gives me three other options in order to find a DC. I tried all three options with the same result being that it could not find my DC (and I'm accessing the AD on the DC itself). The funny thing is that when I go into the domain controller OU in the AD it lists my DC as being there. And when I try accessing the GP on the DC ou it gives me the same pop up with the DC could not be found. From the command prompt I can ping my own DC and the domain using their names, all of which ping properly. The NSLOOKUP has no problem as well recognizing my DC as the default server as well. Much appreciated in advance for any help either way. Thanks again

Oh well. I definitely need a kick in the head. I finally found out why my GP was inaccessible. Apparently I had turned off my "File and Printer Sharing" within my NIC settings not allowing access to the system share that you need in order to access the GPs. So eventhough my DNS setup had gone well without a hitch and DCPROMO had no issues with my DNS setting up AD, my GP was still totally down. I checked file and print share back on and voila!. HELLO GPs! Thanks again all for helping out the doufus again.
