    What router to buy?

Morning all! I'm in the market to purchase a switched router. I was looking recently at the Cisco 1604R ENET 4 port router switch. I just need to set up a 3 class room (computer lab) environment using NAT. Will this do the job? I have been only using NT servers and Linsys Routers thus far to Route IP, so I'm not sure how easy the GUI will be to get used to for a Cisco router. I just want something easy to implement with security. If this is not a good choice, I would much appreciate a recommendation. Thanx in advance.

    NAT problems with web sharing!

Hmmmm... Just like Ryoko asked, can you ping to an outide IP like 192.5.41.40 but you can't ping tick.usno.navy.mil on the client machine? If that's the case then you may have to reset your DNS to an outside source that works temporarily until you can resolve your DNS issues for the client machines. If you can't ping out at all in either case on the client machine then most likely you may not have your ICS turned on or configured properly. Make sure you have your box checked to enable ICS in you network properties for your ISDN modem. Hope that helps.
  4. Morning all! Well to say the least I've got an instructor that has a small pestering dilemma with his OE 6 settings. When he reads his new email in the preview pane window and it comes with an attachment you would see the paper clip icon in the upper right hand corner of the preview pane. When you click on the icon you see the selection of the attachment and the save attachment. He would usually choose the attachment itself and it would prompt a window asking him either to save or open it with a checkmark box (checked of course) asking if he would liked to be asked everytime this occurrs. He accidentally unchecked the box and now can't get the option to recheck that box. Is their any way to reset that selection? Sorry to bother, I know it's a pain in the *** question but I'm gettin pain from him. Thanx in advance.

    Stupid Outlook Express 6 question...

Thanx Manyak. I will take a look into it and see if it has any affect. If not, the instructor will just be SOL. Thanks again.

Hi Manyak. I tried your suggestion but didn't find it working. Your instructions led me to a checkbox for showing ToolTips in the message list. Thanks anyway.

    NTP server not responding...

Morning all. I have a slight dilemma. I just recently started noticing a hang in the amount of time that it takes for a client to log into the domain. But when I go to check the PDC, all I see in the event viewer under the "System Log" is that "The NTP server didn't respond". I'm guessing it's some sort of Net Time protocol server? How do I fix it? Why is it asking for it? Do I have to change the MoBo battery? Sorry to bother you guys. Thanx in advance.

    NTP server not responding...

I just wanted to give props to Clutch and Ryoko for helping a low level tech down on his luck. Apparently I was informed by our central network services that the port was blocked for security. So I was given a new internal IP for NTP and am running fine now. Thanx again.

    NTP server not responding...

Just to double check. In order to set a new NTP server to authenticate time to I would use the net command as follows?: <PROMPT:/>net time \\192.5.41.40 /setsntp Is that the right syntax? If it is I get and error message that says: "System error 53 has occurred" "The network path was not found" Is my port being blocked? The funny thing is that I can ping to it, no problem. Thanks

    NTP server not responding...

Gives me much better insight into what I'm dealing with here. Although I'm not located in the US but rather Canada in an EST Zone, can I still use that site? Thanks again.

    NTP server not responding...

Thanx again Ryoko. I do have a Win2K domain setup. You're probably right about the port being blocked off. Our main network area just recently received an Extreme Networks Firewall. I'm pretty sure they're implementing and testing settings. I don't suppose you would know how to setup a Win2K Adv. standalone server for NTP? Well, thanks again in advance either way.
  13. Moring guys. I just wanted to know if anyone here knows the script or the "how to" to setup network printer drivers automatically from my domain print server on a new account profile without having to create a roaming profile from the client system. I'd like to do everything from one sitting on the server. Thanks in advance.

Printer drivers on a user profile?

Thanx Ryoko. Sorry aboutt the late follow-up. As you can see my time is quite tight. Unfortunately I haven't had time to test it out yet. Hopefully I'll get a chance sometime in the next two weeks. But I will let you know of the results. Thanx again.

Printer drivers on a user profile?

The first part you mentioned is not what I'm looking for. I don't want the Users to do any type of installation but just have it ready for them while they login. This is why I have created Managed Roaming Profile accounts with the printer shares already attached to them. That way if they accidentally delete their shares, all they would have to do is to log out and log back in again. No fuss, no muss for the User. The second part of your instruction might be what I'm looking for so that I can just add the Login Script when I created the account on my main DC ADS server. That way I don't personally have to make their Roaming Profile Account from the client system. Thanx again.

Losing connection to Internet after a while

Sorry didn't read the last post. Glad you resolved it.

Losing connection to Internet after a while

Sounds like you're having an Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size problem. But the thing that boggles me is that Linksys DSL routers handle it fairly well lowering the transmission count for DSL automatically to 1300. HMMM... Try lowering you MTU size to 1300 manually, either on the router or the client system and see if that fixes it.

2k pro printserver for NT4 clients?

Yes it is possible to set it up on Win2K Pro. But you'll be limited with a max of 10 connections at one time. If it's a network printer then you'll setup and add a new port for TCP/IP, install the printer driver and then share it (your choice of using netbeui or IP). If it's just regular parallel then it's just a local install on the default LPT port (if that's the one that's free) and share it. Then you'll have to setup the user accounts with the shared printer either locally on each user system or on roaming accounts with script. Your choice. Remember you can only have up to no more then 10 connections at any one given time with Win2K Professional. Good for a small work environment with a small budget. Hope that helps.

    What is an "unregmp2.exe"

Thanks pbuckne. Actually what you just stated helps a bit. I am running a Win2K domain but one room only has service pack1 beacause of certain specialized apps using it which can't function with service pack2. but the other rooms with service pack2 still get an error with one of the roaming accounts but not both which is better I guess. What I don't understand is that all of my roaming accounts have the same domain user level priveleges and permissions but why do these one or two accounts act up with the unregmp2.exe error at the beginning of login and the others don't? Well I appreciate the help and will look more closely into Media Players role with my domain setup. Thanks again.

List the problems you have had with XP :) :)

It freezes my system on shutdown. It never does shutdown, it hangs my system and when I try hitting the power button for a forced hard shutdown, I get no response from it. I have an Abit BE6 (first version) mobo with the latest Bios Flash. I have to do a "Restart" then do a hard power down at the beginning of the boot. Asus doesn't have an XP driver for my V6600 Geforce256 Deluxe card. It accepts the one made for Win2K but my capture feature on the Geforce no longer works. My Hollwood Plus decoder card remote control no longer works and no XP driver for it is due out anytime soon. That's about it for me.

    Outlook Express problems...

Morning guys. Happy Chinese New Years for those that celebrate! I'm just accidentally blocked a sender in my Outlook Express 6 so that I won't receive their messages anymore. It will automatically throw their messages into the trash. Is there a way to reset it to wipe my blocked senders list clean. I'm on WinXP Pro by the way. Thanks in advance guys.

    Outlook Express problems...

That did it!!! I feel so stupid. I must've went into the Message Rules drop down twice and just skimmed over it not reading it properly at the end where it says "Blocked Senders List" Thanks again.
  23. Morning guys. I have created roaming accounts on my DC (Win2K Adv. Svr.) and have a shared folder off the server for their roaming profiles. I've used roaming profiles for a long time now since WinNT 4 without incident. I now have an account which was supposed to be deleted, which I did delete, but now I can't delete the actual folder for the roaming profile. I get some error telling me that "the folder may be in use" what's even more strange is that the folder has an extension of "*.pds". I've tried turning off filesharing and and IIS Admin services but no luck. I cannot delete this folder. Anybody else run into this problem? Thanx in advance.

    account profile deletion problems...

Well to say the least I was finally able to delete the folder with the help of manually taking back authority manually on every folder within the roaming profile folder (major pain in the toosh). When I tried taking back authority at the top main level folder for the profile and passing it on to all the child object subfolders, files and directories, it did not work. So I had to manually go into each subfolder and perform authority on each individual folder. Thanks for trying to help guys anyways. (No sarcasm intended)

    Apple

Apple still only has 5% of the software market whereas you know who controls the rest. Even Steve Jobs noted that in his keynote speech this past MACEXPO in San Francisco. I would say that their only flaw was that they were so closed marketed in the beginning and somewhat still are with most of their hardware (but much more open than before). As for speed an preformance, PC and MAC are built on two different architecture types. MAC is all RISC based with a quartz rendering engine. I've got to admit that G4 chip with it's Velocity Engine is something esle. It did realtime rendering effects in Final Cut Pro 3 for the transitions. For those of you in the multimedia industry that use video editing software can fully appreciate this feature. I am an avid PC user with a home system and laptop dedicated to Microsoft and Linux and have never ever been a MAC enthusiast but damn after seeing demos of Apple's new product lines I think I'll be cracking open mister piggy bank for some IMac money. If you still don't think that a MAC is that powerful then try running Linux on both and benchmarking them with the same software (I've done it). And I've been changing my tune (slightly) ever since. Only because of the certain softwares available for PC which I really need and luv and am addicted to that I don't take an equal stand for it and Apples enforcement of keeping legally running software on it's systems. Well, that's my two cents.
