Question for the VIDEO file geeks out here (.avi, .mpg)
thatsteveguy replied to adamvjackson's topic in Software
Hi, Correct me if I am wrong but despite the fact the encoded vid will be in an avi 'container' if the host computer doesn't have divx or xvid installed the screenie won't work. At least no avi works for me if it was encoded using those two codecs unless I have them installed or will the .scr get around that somehow? If so you would just need to warn the users that they need to have them installed prior to running it, most peps do nowadays but you never know. And it does sound like a cool screenie!! I know your talking about the movie but I used to watch that old show all the time. one of my favs as a kid. S -
you hit the nail on the head there Mr.Guvernment. My friends and I talk about that often. I would also like to add to what you said.. there was no Ritalin! I am just amazed at some of the stuff I see or hear about when it comes to how people can't accept any responsibility for their actions. We spent hours doing nothing but biking around sometimes till 3-4 in the Morning out where our hills and bush 'used' to be... all houses now. and the bit about kids in the street AlecStarr.. so true. I live in Canada and we used to have massive street hockey games here on my street.and before the houses were built we would make our own ice rink in front and any one could use it.. try that today without getting shot! some parts around here have made it illegal to play sports on public streets!! a shame really.. I would install the latest patch for the game before anything else. S

That looks like Chinese to me. S

Actually it just monitors the hard drive and will warn you if it detects that you may start having problems with it. it will give you a message at boot up stating it detected errors on the drive and you should make a back up and replace the drive. only works on drives that support the technology and most newer drives do. Well I took the plunge for the heck of it! Only playing Medieval Total War at the moment and I did notice that now when trying to save a game the save game menu flashes and it's a pain trying to figure out where to clic to actually save the game. but I am also running the Catalyst drivers (3.0) so it's most likely a vid card driver issue. haven't tried it with other games yet but will let you know after a little Battlefield Multi today! S PS When is anything put out by MS not really beta anyways?!?!?! :x
-
not sure if it will apply to that problem however I know there is a fix from MS that addresses certain issues with administrative rights when playing games. it might help out. sorry don't have the link off hand but just check the ms site and search under the error message your getting and it should be there, or check the auto update page. Well for starters if you could provide us with some more system specs as to what you have in your machine it might help us a bit more. What kind of sound card etc.. also just so you know the fact that the IRQ's were sharing is not necessarily the problem as win2k can normally handle this very well and personally I would say to address some other areas first before changing the ACPI.All of mine share IRQ 9 and I haven't had any problems that I can trace back to that... not yet at least! Unless your computer really doesn't support it then I could see wanting to change that. So give us a bit more info and we will see what we can do for ya! S

If you are running the new 3.0 Catalyst driver (for your ATI card) that may be your problem. I have trouble with a few games now that I have them installed. Did you have any problems with the game when you ran the Catalyst 2.5? If you didn't then you might want to go back to that driver set. Try that and see if it helps. S

WinXP very picky with DMA support for IDE DVD-ROM drives
thatsteveguy replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Hardware
I had the exact same problem with my DVD drive in XP. Had no choice but to go back to win2k just to get DVD's to play. if they ever get it sorted out I might move back to xp but for now 2k is just fine. S -
Drivers for the old force feedabck precision pro
thatsteveguy replied to Cheezestk's topic in Hardware
They don't have drivers for win2k for the old one. ( I have it also) you just go into game controllers, choose to add one and scroll down to sidewinder autodetect and that will put in the supported drivers etc so you can use it. works like a charm here. S -
Ad aware is a sypware scanner. I didn't know it was a trojan scanner too ;( (it isn't? is it?) just wondering cause that would be news to me. S

Need a refresh rate utility for my Radeon 9700 Pro

Yep the latest Catalyst driver (2.5) from Ati does the trick. works for me at least. S -
this is all i found for uninstalling Q6: How do I uninstall ASPI? A6: Unfortunately, there is no graceful way to uninstall ASPI. Run the ASPICHK.EXE file and delete each of the named files from their directories. When you reboot, ASPI will be uninstalled. by the way check for the dma through the control panel>system> device manager just in case to make sure it is activated but I am sure nero is right in saying it is but just in case. S

Could be related but probably not ,but did you check to make sure that DMA mode is working on the drive and it didn't default to PIO mode? S
-
You probably don't see the file because you have hidden files on by default. open up windows explorer and select Tools > Folder options Then clic the view tab and make sure clic the circle next to show hidden files. you should then see the INF file you are looking for. S
-
Also check device manager and make sure the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO. S

Disable loading of "useless" .sys files on startup
thatsteveguy replied to Mirch's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Why not just disable the services in computer management the way you should instead of deleting? S -
You seem to be making the assupmtion that because they are sharing it is bad. which it isn't. the steps you provide are handy if you are having problems and can trace it back to ACPI. (and in most cases it is bad hardware drivers and is not IRQ or ACPI related. back in the Win98 days , yes you did not want sharing, but 2K handles it well and I have never had a problem. So the fact you have devices sharing is not a problem. Where exactly did you get the information that Everquest can't share those IRQ's because it is the first time I have ever heard that.? that sounds more like an AGP issue or just bad display drivers not an IRQ issue. regards S

Actually if you stick to the official servers you should be okay. they disable team killing so you don't get the twits on as much and I have played with some pretty cool people on there as well. Hope to see ya soon (so I can frag ya! lol) take care S
-
you can also get those messages to keep defraging if you happen to have large files on that drive. If you saved some big downloads or something then windows doesn't handle them that well. If you do keep anything but windows on C: (other than installed programs that is) then you might wanna try moving them to another partition and see if that helps any. S

just get Powerstrip and it'll do the trick for ya. S
