Most (good) companies that do data recovery will not charge if they cannot recover anything. and 700 doesn't sound too bad as I have had much worse estimates in price!! S

For heavy internet and games which is better WinXP/Win2k?
thatsteveguy replied to pr-man's topic in Software
Win2k all the way. it's just winxp without the pretty colors and the resource hogging crap you don't need. I've used both and much prefer 2K over XP. S -
when doing dual boot you should always install the lowest OS first. thus you should install 98 before installing 2000 to another drive or partition. Boot managers suck and they cause more problems then they solve so you should always try to avoid them at all costs. installing 98 when you have 2000 installed can seriously hose your system up. S

Have you tried disabling the firewall included in NIS? and just using the router firewall? S -
Check the mounting screws for the mobo. could be a ground issue there. S

Well I know this won't be any help but yes you can do it. I use to have my comp set up that way years back and the quality was just as good as being on the phone but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the software I used for it and I don't have the diskettes anymore. if it comes back to me I will repost to let you know and yes it was quite handy. S Okay I think this is it http://www.accpac.com/products/communication/bitware/comparison.asp but i had diskettes for it so I am not sure if you have to buy this now or what but check it out near the bottom of the page. Sorry but it's against forum policy here to discuss warez cracks or illegal copies of windows OS. you will need to find another forum for your answer as anyone answering here will be aiding and abeting an illegal practice as you have freely admitted to using an ILLEGAL copy of windows XP. Perhaps when you have a legal copy someone will be more than happy to help you out. and yes I do work in Law Enforcement.

What's the verdict on SP3, then?
thatsteveguy replied to packman's topic in Customization & Tweaking
And considering the fact I just downloaded SP 2 for the net framework I would have to agree that it did not have all the fixes right out of the box! S -
Well I don't know if it is related but I was getting that problem a while back as well. Sometimes the update site is wacky and you need to wait a day or so before trying again. however if this has been going on for a few days then you probably have a corrupted file that the updater needs and what I did to resolve it was .. I did a search of their knowledge base using part of that error code and it gave me a link to a file to download and replace in your system folder. after doing that the problem went away. I just can't remember the name of the file and I don't have it on my puter anymore or I would just offer it. but this might help. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q243787 S

Actually it's called a Trend. Mohaa did well so now other games come out in the same genre. After all, for a while it was just futuristic shooters that were coming out then it was sneak around team based stuff and now WW2. Marketing man marketing.. the thing that has been really bugging me is that lately it seems all the games I play regardless of type have the same damn story line.. big baddies threatning destruction and it turns out there is a mole in your own organization. It's bad enough the games are almost all the same but at least try and come up with a different story line (and I don't even normally care about the damn story line!) S

Quote: So, how are the shooters doing in it? I got to "sharpshooter" (33/40) in my 3rd attempt, but I would like to get expert (36+ out of 40) if I can. Has anyone done it yet? Oh man I missed it by one shot. I had 35. Haven't seen what happens if I try it again though.. S

Quote: It's not just the game servers that are busy [not that I'd know], the download servers are maxed out too - I've tried getting it from severeal servers - all set up in Mass Downloader, but none of them are complete yet. Still, I'll get it sooner or later. try at http://www.3dgamers.com/games/americasarmy/ when the others were busy I got it here at around 350k a sec. took about 15 minutes to download. give it a try. Actually there is quite a few servers running it but they are so busy I can only see a few of them at best sometimes. the mission to qualify after the training missions is tuff! but it is supposed to support server browsing in the future and it is a work in progress . I am just not to happy I had to put in gamespy just so I could connect to the game after... other than that I like this game and look forward to playing it more.

Really weird internet/LAN problem - Help needed
thatsteveguy replied to Dirty Harry's topic in Networking
I don't use Cable but I have DSL and your story sounds exactly what I have been going through for the last two months fighting with my ISP insisting the problems was not at my end. Finally yesterday a Techie showed up and did more than just change the modem but he ran some tests on the line and it turns out that my line was not grounded properly. So he had to climb a few poles (at over 100F God bless him!) and properly grounded the wire and all has been much better since then. Now I also know that years ago we were having problems with our cable (just for TV) and the techie who came did the same thing. he grounded the cable wire.. It was like a little splitter with a ground wire coming out of it but I don't know where you can get them. Maybe that is your problems as well. but the problems you are describing are an exact carbon copy of the ones I was having despite the fact I have DSL and you have Cable. Hope this helps.. S -
have you tried the drivers from here? http://www.compeye.com/technical.htm allthough it does not mention xp support, the win2k driver might work. S

Games on Working List - Not Working for me in Win2k
thatsteveguy replied to postul8or's topic in Games
I wouldn't compare win me to 2000 as they are completely different OS's that share little with each other. so the fact something might run will on ME is no indication it will run under 2k. but try a search of the forums as I am sure someone else has had this problem, but you definately want to look for a new video card. S -
Quote: Most non-nvidia cards don't have a refresh rate problem. I have an ATI card and that is news to me. the refresh rate problem extends to all video cards not just nvidia. seeing as it is an OS problem. there may be the odd exception but few and far between. S

I use Drive Image 5.1 myself to do the 40 computers I have in my classroom. I just image (from the server) one of the computers than use that computer as my server. I set it up to multicast and connect the other computers using my PQDI boot disk log into the session and once the other computers are seen in the session I hit go. take about 30 min to an hour and it's done. What version of directx are you running? and did you install the DVupdate for directx? that is available at the directx site? www.microsoft.com/directx give that a shot if you haven't and let us know if that did the trick. S
-
You may have but didn't mention it. did you install the update 1.01 for Fandango?(GREAT game by the way, I love it) I know that is supposed to resolve some issues with Fast computers. also they mention on the site about copying over some files from the game CD to the harddrive. you might want to try that and see if that helps any.
