Just out of curiosity, how many processes do you have running on your system? I just looked and have 31 ... wanted to hear what others have.

Long sotry short, I installed XP Pro to my new sata drive (Raptor) while keeping my two 60 gig pata drives in the system. Windows installed by defalt to drive e:\ on the sata drive. My system seems to see the pata drives as primary and sata as secondary. Anyway, system has been running fine. I am going to sell my good friend some parts from my current system. Mainly the two pata hard drives. I took both drives out and upon starting my system, the SATA drive is now c:\ and my system won't boot. Can I use recovery console to change the letter of my boot drive back to e:\ so I can boot up again? I can't seem to find the answers I need on the web. I can always re-install everything from scratch again, but I rather not go that route. Any idea's?

Quick run down. Built a new system. Started by adding two 10,000rpm raptors in a RAID 0 config. Installed XP Pro. Everything went good. Bought a 3rd raptor and installed it in Primary SATA 0 on my ASUS A8N-SLI mobo. XP see's this drive with no problem under disk management. I then went and installed FC4 on this 3rd HD. The install went great, no issues at all. When the system restarted, grub never started, the system just loaded XP Pro as it normally does. Now, I'm guessing the the bootloader didn't instal on the RAID drive(s) and thats why it's not starting. Not sure how to handle this. I'll do whatever it takes as long as I don't mess up my XP install. That can get messy with RAID at times. Do I need to change something when installing FC4? I'm not to good with Linux yet, so I thought I'd ask you folks. Any thoughts on getting GRUB to work?

He all, a lady I work with has been receiving blank e-mails for the last wek or so. She uses IncrediMail (Latest Version) and has no filters active. When first approached, I thought it might be blocking html based e-mails, but in sending her a plain text e-mail as a test, I discovered ALL her incoming e-mails are blank. There are subject lines on them however. I am going to do a search for spyware/adware in a few minutes, but I wanted to see if anyone has heard of such a problem before. Btw, I did a full system scan with Norton AV 2004 Pro and it came up with nothing. I did a few google searches, but most say the cause is the e-mail client blocking html mail, which is not the case here. Thanks

added 1 linux box to windows network, network can't be seen now
Lotus posted a topic in Linux Networking
Ok, long story short. I built a small linux box and run opensuse 10.0 fully updated on it. I have added to my companies network to learn various aspects of networking with linux. I am guessing that the box took over as master browser, because once it's turned on, I can't open my workgroup. All other aspects of the network work fine. I can manually type //compname/blah and see stuff, but not through Network Places. I CAN however see all system from the linux box. Where in linux do I go to stop it from taking over as master browser (if thats the case) -
Hey all, I need a program that can do daily backups of a single folder and its contents. It can either be backed up to a tape backup or to a hard drive. It needs to be able to say do a backup every night at say 10:00pm. We are running Windows 2k Pro on our server, I need something as fast as possible. Something reliable. Many thx.

Grub doesn't kick in after installing linux (Dual Boot)
Lotus replied to Lotus's topic in Everything Linux
I'll play with it a little later tonight, been pretty busy the last couple of weeks. Anyway, I did setup a RAID 0 which under linux is sda & sdb and the drive I installed FC4 on was sdc. Now where sda & sdb are in a raid 0 config and working as one drive, I think grub installed on sda only. Now I'm still new to raid, but it seems like this may be my issue. Where the two drives act as one, I'm not sure where the MBR actually is. Is it on sda AND sdb? Or maybe just on sdb? I'll dig a little deeper this weekend and post what I find. Just to double clarify, sda & sdb are in RAID 0 (Windows XP ONLY) sdc is on sata controller 1 and is where linux is installed. MBR is on the RAID 0, but not sure where physically. Can I edit my boot.ini on my C drive in windows to boot to linux or at least start grub? -
It's actually a pretty nice browser. It's options are very close to Firefox's with the addition of a few more. It has a real interesting GUI as well. It's different, but has potential to be very usefull. If anyone is interested in it, go check it out Here I was planning on installing just to check it out and remove it in a few days. Not sure now, might hang onto it for a few. Go have a look! - Lotus

Well, on my home system (3.2ghz w/ 1gig PC3200) Netscape works like a charm. But here at work on my 1 ghz cpu w/ 256mgs ram it slows down a lot. At one point it was taking 89megs of memory and using over 85-90% of the cpu. yuck The new tab features kick ass. You can have multiple tabs load as your start page, and you can control your tabs very well. (Like close all tabs from an originating website) The other key feature is that it has both the Netscape Engine and IE Engine built into it. You can set which engine you want a bookmark or tab to use! It even works with Windows Update! Anyone else tried it? It's worth a try, but Firefox is still better imo. Does firefox have an extension that allows you to load multiple tabs on startup? I really like that feature in Netscape 8 beta. - Lotus

I was looking into this same question a while back. I ended up hearing from a devoloper who said that it does not. This was back in the .8 and .9 versions, so something may have changed in version 1.0. -
Agreed, I just fixed a laptop that was doing this very same thing. The new bios took care of the problem.

After installing new Heatsink computer turns off and no sound.
Lotus replied to Apparition's topic in Hardware
Well, if you had no problems up until now, it sounds as though the heatsink isn't firmly in place or there was no compound used. This is just an assumption, but a lot of cpu's will either slow down immencely or turn off to prevent damage. Can you give us a little more info on your system? What chipset etc. As far as your sound goes, I'm not to sure. Did you make sure you grounded yourself before touching the inside of your system. Static electricity can easily kill a pc, or at least parts of it. Double check your heatsink though first, make sure it's seated in place and not fetched up on the mount and that you have some compound between your cpu and heatsink. (Artic Silver 5 works very well) -

Best FREE FTP Client and Server Programs out there in your opinion?
Lotus replied to jmmijo's topic in Software

Well I finally broke down and got a copy of XP Pro for my home system to replace Win2K Pro. I ran the system compatibility test, and had no issues so I started the upgrade. After setup copied the files it restarted. This is where my problem is. Upon restarting, the XP logo comes on screen and before the progress bar makes it across once, the system freezes. I then tried to do a clean install, and again it freezes in the same spot (about 3/4 of the way across) I have never had this happen and frankly, don't know where to begin troubleshooting. These are my specs: Intel P4 3.2mhz Prescot 800mhz FSB w/ HT enabled Artic Cooling 4ProL HSF with Artic Silver 5 compound DFI Lanparty Pro 875B Rev. B Mobo 1 Gig Kingston PC3200 in Dual Channel Mode (DDR400) 2 Maxtor 60 Gig 7200rpm HD's Radeon 9200SE 128mg Vid Card Using the Onboard 6 channel AC'97 Audio 48x CDRW Drive (Not sure brand) Does anyone have any idea's why setup freezes before finishing? What is actually happening when windows loads up the first time. I never even made it to the keyboard/time setup screen, which I believe was the next step. *sigh* I am off to research this some more, I hope someone has some insight on this! - Lotus

Yes my hardware does meet the requirements. I did try out my other video card and had the same issue, and I also tried doing both the upgrade(first) and a clean install (on freshly formatted HD). I decided to just go back to Win2K. Hell I never had any issues with it, so why I went for an upgrade is beyond me. Just wanted something newer I guess. Anyway, Win2K is back on it and working like a charm. I'll just hold off until Longhorn comes out =)

Something else worth mentioning. Windows won't setup in the usual GUI. It starts to prepare for installation...hangs a sec, then goes to the old blue screen with progress bar across the middle to copy files. It has no problem copying files either.. It gets done, says it's saving configuration, then says it's going to restart. Ater restarting the problem is there. After trying to upgrade again...the XP logo appears and this time no prgress bar goes across the screen. The system just hangs there. Grrrr. Maybe I'll just go back to 2K. This is really annoying.

Well, I made "very little" progress. I disabled all my onboard stuff, set my ram to run @ 266 instead of 400mhz. I can't underclock my CPU though. Anyway, I made it into safe mode, but of course got the "Setup cannot continue in safe mode, setup will restart" message. After restarting in normal mode same thing happened. Froze. Now with the bios setting changed, I am going to try the upgrade again. I haven't swapped the vid card yet, I too doubt thats the issue. I hope it goes this time.

Yes I did...iirc the last thing to load before it froze was agp something. I don't use an AGP card though. I do have an old Geforce II card I can throw in that is AGP just to see if that makes a dif. All the hardware I mentioned is new. I bought it all mid October and never had any issues with Win2k. I am going to go home and grab my system on lunch break so I can work on it here at work after we close. I'll at least be able to have internet access that way. Btw, thanks for replying. The girlfriend won't be happy if she can't use e-mail lol. I wish I had some spare pc3200 kicking around, but alas I don't. I'll try the video card thing though and let ya know how it goes. I read somewhere that someone else had the exact problem I am with an ATI card. *crosses fingers*
