Just decided to drop a note to say i have done all the registry tweaks you listed above. Works great, i do notice web pages load 20-30% faster, downloads ~10% faster..., hey every little bit counts on a modem-dialup connection --> Lucent 33.6k Winmodem, Win2K SP2, IE5.5 SP2 Oh, also though i'd post to keep your thread fresh & at the top:D, incase any new members haven't seen it yet. Cheers, PS: Good work APK.

Here's what i've got: Two Computers running Win2K SP3. #1 Computer Name: DELL (Network ID) #2 Computer Name: HP (Also happens to be their model, but i'm talking about their, identifiable network name, i named them after what they are) Workgroup: IDAVALL (For both computers) #1(DELL) ISA slot Network Card - Accton EN1660 PnP LAN Card (Legacy Mode) #2(HP) ISA slot Network Card - NE 2000 Compatible (manufactured by Novell/Anthem) Computers are connected by 30m (60ft) of Coaxle (The stiff Black Cable type with metal screw ends). One Cable, two computers only, no hub, T-junctions or nodes. Problem, well NIC's are installed fine, LAN engaged at logon, except i can't find the other computer under "My Network Places", I try using find computer option and type in either DELL or HP, though no luck , i have allowed zip drives, Cd/RW drives and partions to be shared, though they only show up under "My network Places" on the computer that is sharing that Hardware not the other! Both computers are logged on as Administrator, both have the little black LAN icon in taskbar, with speed 10mbps. Sent 0 packets, Received 0 packets. (Sometimes packets sent can be up to 60-70, however packets received is ALLWAYS 0 at both ends). Components checked for both include: Client for Microsoft Networks File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Do any other protocols need to be used or something ??? PLEASE HELP. PS is networking easier in Win98SE? 'cos both computers have Win98 installed in hidden partitions for dual boot setup. Cheers,

Win2K LAN setup NOT WORKING, using ISA NIC's
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Networking
PROBLEM SOLVERED Read somewhere, interesting website actually... The Importance of grounding the terminator at one end of the network, which is often poorly documented! So i took a cable from a car stereo, screwwed it to the case of one of the computers, and the other end to the terminator on that computer. Bob's my uncle and voyla IT WORKS!!!! Cheers, Thanks for tips and feedback, Im off to play some LAN Games -
Win2K LAN setup NOT WORKING, using ISA NIC's

/clutch No cannot ping each other (Using cmd-box typing "ping 192.168.0.2" /CheekyMonkey #1 Full Computer Name: DELL Workgroup: IDAVALL IP adress: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DNS adress: 192.168.0.1 WINS adress: 192.168.0.1 #2 Full Computer Name: HP Workgroup: IDAVALL IP adress: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DNS adress: 192.168.0.1 WINS adress: 192.168.0.1 Is that right? BTW that is under TCP/IP, though isn't another protocol primarily used for LAN networking? Yeah i originally didn't use the T junction connectors, but i read somewhere that it is quite important, so the T junction connectors are connected to the back of the BNC on one side of the T the cable connects on the other There is a plug screwed on. One card has RJ45 but the other does not Is there a jumper or something that has to be set to tell the computer which one (BNC or RJ45) is being used? How do you set to DHCP? Thanks for the feedback, Cheers. -
Is there any date set for a service pack for IE6? It is about time for one wouldn't you agree? Or has MS stopped with SP's for IE, getting users to apply the "Patches" instead through windowsupdate? PS, how does it work again with IE service Packs? is there a URL where the full pack can be downloaded (Like for NT "Full install" service packs), and installed over serveral machines, or does one have to go through windows update anyway? Cheers,
-
ofelas, Do you have a url for that mate? Oh and whats the deal with this: Quote: Installing over Windows 2000 or Windows XP releases ------------------------------------- Typical and full installations are not currently available for Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 will install a minimal set of files onto your system. This includes the Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 Web browser and scripting support. Is it maybe that the 2K/XP Service Packs cover the other areas of IE? Any news articles which look at IE6 SP1? BTW, I'm installing on a Win2K Box with SP3. Cheers.

Hi There, Running XP Home on P41.8Gh, 256mbDDR, 32mbSIS vid. I'm having some problems, firstly the most annoying one is the searching for files function. U Know: Start -> Search -> Files & Folders Yeah well, apart from that god damn annoying dog that pops up, when i try to search for files eg. *.doc or index or *.htm or *.* , the hourglass shows for half a second on the mouse, then an empty 'error' type prompt pops up, except there is just an OK button, no message or whatever. And Disk activity isn't happening. You press OK, then well nothing has appeared in the search field and disk activity has ceased. Anyways, I got hold of the free version of Powerdesk 5. I now use it's search function Then i stumbled on Tweakui for XP, i installed it and found an option where i could revert back to classic search style in explorer, cool i thought, this should fix it. Except for getting rid of that dog it didn't help much. Except there is no longer a prompt type error. Now the hourglass appears for half a second and then not much else happens. Anyway it would be comforting to hear if someone else has this problem, and preferably have a solution. The second problem is every time i open Explorer, Word, IE or even Roxio CD Creator. Lets say the program starts maximised, i press the 'Restore' button (Between 'minimise' & 'close', top right hand corner) the screen allways restores to something like 4 pixels smaller than maximised, so you don't even notice it, and it's hard to drag the corner coase it's so close to the startbar and all. After i do Drag the screen to a smaller size, lets say a third of the screen. Then i press 'maximise', well it maximises fine, i press 'restore' the window restores to it's 1/3 screen size, beut .. that is untill i have closed the program and next time i go to use it i have to play the fun and games again of trying to drag the window in from the corner and not pull up the startbar. Pretty frustrating really. The third problem, is much less complex. I expect you guys can help out here without much trouble. And that is that, after pressing on a .zip attachment in Outlook2000, you know how it asks 1. To Save To Disk /or 2. Open file in Current Location Well i selected 'Save To Disk' then ticked the "Don't ask me this again", well It does the oposite now. I click a .zip file in Outlook2000 or even in IE on a Webpage, it downloads to Temporary Internet Files then opens. "IT DOESN'T ASK WHERE I WANT TO SAVE IT"! So where can i reset the prompt that asks for saving/opening files in IE? Last Problem, When computer boots up and wait for password at login screen (classic login type). The computer can stand for hours showing that login prompt, without activating the screen saver or turning of the screen. How can i enable that? When logged-on, screen turns of in 15mins. Yes well thats just some of my odd XPeriences with XP so far. I would appreciate some help in fixing these problems. I need to hand this system over to a client soon and want it working trouble free. Thanks for those of you who have read this far And thanks for your help in advance. Cheers, Curt.

Anyone got any email program that they reckon is great? I just find the regulars such as Outlook, O Express, Netscape rather annoying and restrictive and akward to make good backups of emails. Confusing to try to send as different users with different reply-to adresses ect... I mean Outlook is allright co you can export to a .pst then after reinstalling an OS you just import again into outlook saving everything intact. Pity .pst doest import into Outlook Express or Netscape. Pity about all the security holes in MS Email clients. Anyway what is your favorite email client? What features do you really like? What is unique in your favorite? I would just like to find an alternative, since unfortunatley Outlook is allright (Not Great) as a email client, though with practically every virus Designed specifically for Outlook and OExpress, I would just like an allternative. So whats your verdict? PS. I know i can hear someone yelling jump to Linux:D, cos they use this that and the other which is free and works great, i would love to as a hobby, but hey just something that will fix me up with MS for the time.

I am considering building my own system, Considering i get to individually pick the bits and peices that would go in, i was wondering what under each hardware category is best supported and runs best under XP? Since often the $/Performance/Stabilty ratio is dependant on particulary brands within the Hardware market wich focus on this that and the other. Now i'm not after the Gamers dream machine, but names of harware where the companies focus specifically on Win XP. For example that Intels P4 is better than the equivalent AMD because of the relationship Intel has with MS. Cos many Hardware manufacturers i assume go for compatibilty above performance, that is maybe modifying drivers from Win9X to allow it to run in NT, XP, Li/Un*x, & Mac. right? Well bugger that, if there is harware designed for XP availabe for a similar price, or what? Whats your feedback on this? Cheers.

I'm after the latest drivers for a Pentium II system 400mhz, Chipset 440 (i think) Plus this number 82443BX I am going to run NT4, on Intels Site i can only find Drivers for 9X!!! --> http://developer.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/440_index.htm So i have done some more searching and found these two sites. http://www.microbits.com.au/support/mainboard/chipsets/intel/ http://damagebox.dyndns.org/news_reply.x/137/ Though i don't think that is what i'm after, Please do any of you know where to get the right driver, plus have any of you used other driver that do a better job like the 810 chipset or whatever, ie what experiences with drivers for PII using NT4? Does anyone know where i can get Advanced Power Management (APM) for NT4? I had a program called APM 2.0 for WinNT that came on an application CD for i Lapptop which i was leasing, though have since returened it. Anyway that program allows NT4 to go into "Standby" and do "Shut-Down & Poweroff" I think it was designed mainly for laptops though i worked fine for my Desktop PC aswell. Anyway where can i find APM now? I need it on another Desktop PC. Can i DL it from somewhere, what company makes this software? For W2K & W98? Cheers, Feedback appreciated.

What is it good for? What do you guys use it for (Win2K)? Do you encrypt the entire C:\ Drive or selected files. What does it protect from? Hackers, viruses, unorthorised access from P2P programs, spyware? Is there a legitamate use of file encryption for the home user? Can those files be accessed if disk has to be coupled as a slave drive to another Win2K Box? Cheers, Feedback much appreciated

I have allways wondered over this, What purpose is there in degausing & what does the word mean? Why do some monitors have the option and some don't. Is it something you guys do on a regular basis? Cheers,

Oh.. if you know, for that matter is it possible in NT4? Win2K SP2, IE5.5 SP2, NT4, IE6 Cheers,

URL / IP blocking in Win2K ?
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost -- Removed examples -- Is this a valid configuration of the hosts file? Any tips on how this would affect browsing the net would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Guys. Cheers, -

Say i want to block anything and everything at the domain www.yahoo.com , including www.yahoo.com/subcategories/ What would be the snippet of text i would put in the hosts file? Thanks heaps Clutch, Cheers. -

PLEASE HELP!!! I Need Troubleshooting tips for a Win2K Foulu
reversing_drive posted a topic in Software
Hi, i was mucking around with some old software on this CD for NT4. Amoungst this software was APM2.0 for Win NT, that is Advanced Power Management for NT. Well we all know Win2K allready has that, i wasn't thinking, damn! Anyway i have a pretty serious problem now, i cannot boot Windows2000, i get as far as the black screen with the progressive white strip along the bottom of the screen, then before i get the Windows2000 logo/boot Screen the screen just goes entirely blue, no text, nothing, disk activity ceases, completley dead. I Have tried this so far: Safe mode, same symptoms, no difference Boot of CD and attempt repair, scans the disk for errors and does those three options, checking boot record bla & bla bla... No luck, makes no difference. I have access to another computer with Win2K, and am able to couple the HD as a slave and check things out, but how would i go about repairing, i checked out what files have been modified lately and it doesn't really give a clue. What files engage as the Win2K boot Gui pops up? Could i just copy them over? How can i unistall application from a Win2K install if i am unable to boot it? How do i edit the registry remotley? or in Console mode? PLEASE, PLEASE any tips are greatly appreciated, i know this forum has great advice. You see i have just spent half a day reinstalling Windows, tweaking, dowloading an Hours worth of updates from Windows & Office updates, & other software updates. Then this just had to happen Here are some of the files which have been created or modified since installing that application. Including some sort of log files with extension .000 & .001 http://www.ozemate.com/help/win2k.exe (Selfextracting Zip) Or you can download http://www.ozemate.com/help/win2k.zip if you have a suitable extracting utility. Please if there are any other files which can give any clues please inform me and i'll post them up as well or email them. Thanks For hearing me out, Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting tips you may have. Running Win2K SP2, Trying to run Warcraft2 which claims it can run on Windows NT. Aside from fixing the sound problems with VDMSound, i can still not get the game to work because it claims that it cannot find a VESA video driver! My video card- ATI Rage Pro 8mb AGP2x So i went to http://support.ati.com/drivers/dos/dos_vbe_221.html and got the latest VESA driver, though when i try to load it it comes up with the error - Mach64 adapter not detected! Any else had issues with VESA video drivers, are they included in Win2K? Anyone been able to Run Warcraft2? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Cheers,

It all seems a little silly to me, Sure if it stood for something significant, but just adding NT or XP after the word 'Windows' because the letters look good together, well that what it seems like anyway. I mean what are they going to call the next OS? They should stick to the year numbering, Windows95 Windows98 Windows2000 [Windows02 or Windows2002], ect.. at least it is systematic and makes sense. Besides i reckon the year extension looks better that two letters which seem to represent no or little meaning. Hey, just a thought,

Direct X 8 & Latest Video Drivers & Sound Drivers, N
reversing_drive posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hi Guys, Just Rebuilt my Win2K system. And from what i can tell evrything works fine and dandy, so i am wondering wether i should bother installing Direct X 8.1 and latest Video and Soundcard drivers. I mainly only use the system for internet and work purposes, occasionally some media stuff. What's the deal with DirectX ? Does that only speed up the system under gaming or does it increase general system performance? And Video Drivers? I do occasionally encode and decode MP3's on my system, do sound drivers have any impact on quality there? 196Mb PC100, 400mhz PII, 8mb ATI Rage, Yamaha Sound. Cheers, -

OK hej svejs. -
