I was wondering:p If there is a possibilty to make an image of a really good clean installation of for example Win2K with service packs and hotfixes(With all your settings, tweaks and configurations, which can otherwise take days to fix up). Then have the image written to a CD and when you feel like you need a fresh install you can just re-transfer the image of your perfect install, ready-to go from a CD? Hey, just a suggestion. I know from experience that it is not the installation of the OS that takes time, it is the fiddling after that takes a heck of a lot of time Cheers,

Noticing the A$200 price difference between XP Pro & XP Home just makes me wonder how crippled is XP Home? Personally i couldn't afford XP Pro so i wonder if i should bother at all? Cheers.

Dissabling Device to prevent BSOD from defctive Hardware/Dri
reversing_drive posted a topic in Hardware
I continually get a BSOD in Win2K SP2 were a reference to 'wdmaud.sys' is made. Someone mentioned before on these boards that 'wdmaud.sys' refers to "MMSYSTEM Wave/Midi API mapper" Could i disable some Multimedia Devices in "Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Devices" to prevent these Blue Screens. If so what sound would be affected in Windows. Thanks in advance -
I currently have 128mb PC100 on my PII400 Dell Dimension V400. I personally think 128mb is minimum recommended requirement for Reasonable Response, though i really think i need 256. I have three dimm slots, two free. Though i have some questions regarding upgrading the mem: I have 1 stick of 128 @ 100mhz, can i chuck in an extra stick of 128mb @ 133mhz or does it Have to be at 100mhz aswell. If i cannot missmatch, then... could i put one stick of 256mb PC133 in ? How do i know if the PC can handle more than 128mb per slot? How do i know if it can handle 133mhz? Or will it just run at 100mhz default? Suggestions Appreciated, Cheers.

I will shortly be getting unlimited hours and unlimited downloads:D, (currently stuck with 150hrs ;( ). So then i will be online pretty much all-day-everyday, and i think i may have to get a better modem, currently i have a Lucent LT Winmodem 33k. Though with my current ISP i can only connect @ 28,000bps i have another one which allows we to connect @ 32,600bps. So what modem would be worth getting, i only use modems for data, i never use it for voice(i have a telephone) or FAX (i have a Fax machine). Yeah i am looking for speed & durability (I have allready burnt out one modem on this W2k box US Robotics 56k), what is preferable 'internal' or 'external'? Cheers.

Quote: Well if it helps, the file wdmaud.sys is the "MMSYSTEM Wave/Midi API mapper". So it's related to your sound card probably. I have really been getting that bluescreen quit often now I Was wondering, what Hardware or Drivers can i disable in 'Device Manager' to disable "Wave/Midi API mapper", do you reckon this would stop the blue screens? Would it prevent any sound in Windows, or just some formats? Your feedback is appreciated

Is this a standard Win2K folder C:\WINNT\twain_32 If so what is meant to be in it? Some drivers & stuff? I take it is for scanning (Win2K scanner support drivers or something?) You see when i try to scan (HP Scanjet 4100C) i get an error saying - "Twain driver not loaded or in use by other hardware, or corrupt and needs reinstalling" (well something along those lines) In my C:\WINNT\twain_32 i have hpprsclt.ds , hpsjsrc.ds and three 'empty' directories - 'fjscan' , 'logiscan' & 'miitwain' None of these files or directories seem to be created by Windows, nor are there any .sys , .ini , .vxd , .drv So what do you guys have in your directories? any drivers. Do i have anything missing? Anyone else have a HP scanner? What is Twain??? I would appreciate any help, Cheers.

Personally, Windows 98se. NT4 just lacked a few things, USB support, Games support, powers savings support. Was glad to leave the flakey 9X kernel to more robust NT kernel, with Windows9X harware & software support

Mine is 19mb, Clean Win2K install March 2001, Updates: Service Pack 2, IE6 Apps: I'll Get back to you on this one.

I was wondering when SP3 for Win2K is Due. I have heard somewhere the BETA is out though, once the official SP3 comes out i'm gonna make an integrated Win2K SP3 Bootable CD do a clean reinstall.

I found that post quit amussing, NT3.x is the only MS OS i have never used (Apart from XP - I'm poor:p ) I am still a huge fan of NT4, I have it installed on my laptop, Sharp 586, 16mb ram. A little slow given the 16mb of Ram, though stable as hell. (Without a CD drive it is hell reinstalling windows, never ever want to have to do it agin on that machine) Plus the laptop has ibuilt hibernation type powersaving in the BIOS, i shut the lid and it suspends everything from the memory to some reserved disk space then resumes where i was next time i start the laptop (No need to reboot, and yes the laptop is completley powered off:D ) My 2 cents...

Yep i have an onboard soundcard, Yamaha DS-XG, Driver version- 5.12.01.2228 So you reckon it's the driver, could it be defective harware? The computer is is almost 4 years old. What is better, windows default driver or the drivers supplied by the soundboard manufacturer? 'Cos the MS drivers are quit old, 1999. Cheers,

although the rule of thumb is to have virtual memory 2X that of Physical memory, with 512mb Rd RAM, the page file would hardly be used. Though in any case, put it in one partition, by itself. give it a dedicated Partition, the first physical Partition on the second hard-disk (Not the Same HD as your installed OS is on). That should give best performance. Cheers, PS: I have allways been curious, does it matter what file system you use for the swapfile-partion? NTFS or FAT32? For performance that is...

Thanks for all the feedback guys Looks like Zoom is a likely candidate, i'll check it out, (Got any good links on reviews, info ect.. on Zoom?) So what exactley is the difference between a harware and software modem? My current Lucent LT win modem is a physical peice of hardware in one of my PCI slots, does it have anything to do with how packets are handeled (Software ctrl vs. Hardware ctrl?) or configuration of the modem? Quote: I've got a Zoom 2920 PCI hardware modem. Works quite nicely ~ I guess that is US$, right;) Cheers,

I want to network two computer, though one doesn't have any free PCI slots, hence can't install quik-fix network card. What options do i have? I was thinking USB networking, I mean it is fast enough, though i haven't seen networks set up in this way. Can a network be run through the USB port? I that case i'll probably need a hub & stuff right. The network is primarily for gaming, between a Win2K box & Win98se box, though occasionally may be used for file transfers. Cheers, PS I don't know squat about networking.

Network without available PCI slot?
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Networking
Thanks for all the feedback, i am a little embaressed about the 10Mbps thing, oh well:p Yeah i'll probably just get another ISA NIC. (Or if i'm lucky i might find the one i lost ;( ) Cos' what i have had to do in the past is call one computer with the other using both phone lines, which means i lock out the phone lines to the house:( , Which either meant short sessions or late ones. Quote: Ok, maybe I'm outta touch with ready-made computers (always bought 'em as parts) but it strikes me that you have two computers old enough to have only 2 or 3 PCI slots but functioning USB ports. Just to avoid disappointment it might be worthwhile to test that those games are playable on both boxes. To answer that, one is a compact little HP Pavilion 4404 [333mhz K6-2, 64mb PC133, 32 TNT2, Win98se] the other a Dell Dimension V400 [PII 400mhz MMX, 128mb PC100, ATI Rage 8Mb AGP, Win2K & Win98se]. Fair point though, i think ready-made computers can be a little skimpy on things such as extra ports & slots. Both have 2 USB ports though only the Dell is USB1.1 compliant. Both were new machines Late '98. Cheers, -
Network without available PCI slot?
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Networking
What is an ISA NIC. as opposed to ISA card? So does a 10Mbps network card deliver 10 megabytes of data per second? Because i find that a 56k modem does not deliver 56 kilobytes a second, more like 4kb a second:(. -
I have a laptop with 6x DVD, Gateway SOLO, (Don't have the part number here right now). 128mb RAM, PII 233mhz. Win2k. Does anyone know of any good (not overly bloated) free software for playing DVD's. Cheers.

Network without available PCI slot?
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Networking
kgeissler, I am interested, how do these USB phone line networks work? Is it a type of Network which Games like Half-Life, Blood2, QuakeII will recogonise? Dirty Harry, The Main PC [Win2K box], has three PCI slots, which two are free (Sound & Video come from the Motherboard). The second PC [Win98se box] has two PCI slots, both are used, one for sound card the other for 32mb TNT2 video card which replaced the internal modem which was originally there. So not much options there. M4Carbine, Yes i was also considering ISA, infact i had two old ISA Network cards though i have lost one:(, I didn't think i'd ever use them ;(, anyway how much do ISA network cards go for these days? Another thought, Could one computer use a PCI slot network card and the other an ISA card? Like i said i know squat about networking, probably wouldn't work huh? Thanks again, cheers. -

Well this could make for some interesting reading material , though maybe should be in "Other" category" Not "Applications (XP)" -
Man i allways find this kindoff stuff interesting. No matter what way you look at it computers seem to double in speed every year. I makes you wonder ... will it ever stop...? They were saying back in the days of the 386 that they could probably not push over 33mhz because it was causing some sort of interfernce with television/radio waves. (Or something like that) Even quotes such as the one from Bill Gates (Back in the 80's) "No one should need more than 512k memory" (or something Like that) I certanly think that optics are the future, & APK that Rushmore, is that just like one big block of memory (No moving Parts), Though i fail to see how 20GHZ could ever find it's way in to the home/homeoffice , surely this proccessing technology could only be used to it's capacity in Science and Physics/Astronimical calculations. Maybe in Multimedia production? I mean many people fail to see what difference(noticeable) a 1GHZ processor does compared to a 2GHZ, people just never use that much power. And for example, what is Win XP's recommended minimum requirements, 128mb RAM, PIII or equivalent ~700mhz. Yeah well i'm no tech. expert. But yeah, hey BladeRunner do you have a URL 4 us man to check it out? Cheers,

Provided you install nothing on top of 9x I mean you can install the latest DirectX, some Games, However you should stop there and go no further. Once you start installing Office2000 Prem ed. IE6, Dreamweaver4, ICQ2000, Netscape?, Latest Virus Scanner of your choice, ZoneAlarm, Overbloated Win Media Player7, ect.. (any other apps you may use day to day) YOU HAVE SUDDENLY GOT A VERY UNSTABLE SYSTEM 8) Well in my experince, yours:confused ;( So if you expect to do all the things you may do on computer on one Win9x install, expect BSOD many times. Solution to this: "Win2K Dualboot Win98" or "WinXP"(I haven't XPerienced this 1 yet) Anyway i have :(ed many times over some bad XPeriences with Win9x (WinME is in a separate category of itself), and yes i have found the problem, it doesn't seem to handle to many installs, i don't know what it is, probably the registry. It just can't hack it. Without failure Win9x will fail, after installing to many programs. That is the biggest sigh of relief i have had about my experiences with Win2K which has every program i 'have ever used and am using' installed, current registry size is 18mb and growing:D Win9x is great for games and newbie operation, but you are allways restricted, get too carried away with your favourite apps and BSOD will come and take that away. Cheers.

Want to speed up your system BIGTIME?
reversing_drive replied to SHS's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I thought i'd just say that there was no noticeable performance difference when i used the registry hack. I'm sure different sytems have different response levels to the crack. I Run on a Dell v400, PII 400, 128 PC100, 8mb 2x AGP. Win2K SP2. I tested on ICQ2000b, Outlook 2000 & other apps. I'm not saying it doesn't work, I'm sure it does, for one thing you seem so excited:D about it. Maybe it'd make a difference if i had a PIII, or PC133 RAM or whatever the bottleneck in my sytem may be. Cheers.
