Quote: You've got to edit the registry a little bit. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Morpheus (or Kazaa) change the key LimitBitrate from decimal 1 to decimal 0 And that should do it. Yep, sure does work. Thanks:p

Zip Drives.... and the people who love them
reversing_drive replied to sapiens74's topic in Hardware
Quote: Parallel ones are even easier... USB ones? Simplest, they have those now too! I too, cannot believe the zip has not replaced the floppy... APK I have an IDE 100mb drive for the desktop & USB/PCMIA 250mb external Zip Drive for the Laptop. It is absolutley the best and most practicle way to take backups for the laptop. I have no faith in CD-RW Drives for laptops, they are probably more reliable nowadays though my past experiences have been sour. I did not take long to replace the 5.5inch floppy drives. I dread good ol' 1.44mb floppy's will be around for yonks yet, unless Sony's new 3.5in. 100mb floppy drive could become more universally acceptable, i don't have one, how do they measure up to the Zip drive (Apart from 150mb difference in newer Zip Drives). And whats' the deal with JAZZ drives, isn't that a little excessive? Geez, i guess they were saying the same thing about floppys 15 years ago. Hmmm. who could ever need 1.4mb of storage space, hmmm... (Sorry 750k back then, right?) Cheers, -
I wouldn't use add blocking software either, though i am also restricted to internet access of 28,800bps if i'm lucky i get 32,600bps connection. We all have morals about certain things, i think it is good banners can pay for sites such as this magnificiant site. But i never have and never will click on banners for whatever garbage is written on them. Though i sometimes click-through to help sites such as ntcompatible. It's like with software piracy, we all have our own opinions on that, right. Well mine is, sure copy software, try it out. If you keep using it and like it, THEN BUY IT!!! Besides naviscope doesn't seem to remove the banners from ntcompatible anyway. Though it does a good job of hotmail:D and other bandwidth heavyweights (Clutter, adds, uneccessary eyecandy, bloatted content, ect...) Cheers, PS Hotmail doesn't reconize i have a version 4 browser or later with Naviscope enabled (I have IE5.5 SP2), could this be because i have 'Hide System Information' option enabled?

I find that i most cases in Win2000 when using the operating system, installing, unistalling apps, up[censored] , new drivers, tweaking ect... you would be either most of the time (If not all the Time) logged on as administrator, OR have a separate user profile with administrative privelages. But say you have a second profile, which has the same rights as the guest account (though not enabling guest account because it has the fixed 'guest' PW). Using this profile, are many viruses (Damaging types, modifying system files ect...) stopped in their tracks because they are restricted to behaving within the user rights of the guest account, ie. would they be helpless in trying to modify any system files because of auditing & user rights? While on the same note, would hackers have a harder time modifiying a users computer remotley because of the restrictions the current user has? Just a thought? May be usefull in some circumstances, if this is the case Cheers.

A security measure against viruses??
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: Me? I don't like running with 1/2 a$$ed priveleges... many times I can't to do certain things! Setting up my system? I need them...! Yeah i normally wouldn't run with any other privelages than 'Admin' privs, but at the end of each month i will usually use up any extra Internet hours downloading Music Videos and Mp3's using Peer2Peer apps, i just feel a little uneasy leaving the computer unattended during the night:( when logged on the net. Quote: Watch it with emails, get a good AntiVirus, and disable macros... in apps & script scraps too! Change the .vbs file association to do that, easy rig for that! Yeah i'm cautious of any emails with perculiar Subject lines or execuatable attachments, or any unexpected email from strangers with attachments. I will usually forward it to my Hotmail and check it out at UNI... if it looks interesting enough. I use Mcafee5.21 and update .dat's every chance i get, i visit windowsupdate at least once a week and i run Zonealalrm 2.6 (With 'mailsafe' feature enabled.) I plan to reupgrade to IE6 when Mcafee releases it's compatibility patch. I have .vbs assosiated to open with notepad. Quote: P.S.=> Works for me! I personally, would LOVE to meet some "serious hacker" & have him try to break my machine online... just to see if it could be done! apk I see your point, it is rather frustrating putting hours of work in to secure your system as much as you can, then don't have any real use of it. But then again, most of the time... would you really know if someone tried to hack you. You wouldn't really know untill they were successfull (In most cases). The same really goes for viruses, i hardly ever get viruses sent to me (I guess this is a good thing), though it makes me wonder if it's really worth the effort sometimes. It is really exciting when Mcaffe catches one. It's only happened twice and they were old viruses anyway ;(. But hey i wouldn't be inviting people to hack your system man if i were you. Unless you feel you got nothing to loose, or have nothing to hide, some crazy folk might well take you up on that offer, and trust me there are many more patches & service packs to come (For Win2k & XP alike), and that's not just compatibility updates there sure are some security holes left i bet. But thanks again for your thoughts and opinions, this has been an interesting topic. Cheers, -
A security measure against viruses??

Thanks guys, for your feedback. I found it all quit interesting, and it seems that in some cases it would be usefull to run such a setup (second user with retarded previlages). Cheers, PS=> Now don't go into to much detail, for all you guys know i could be the next virus mastermind, taking your opinions into account for my next project. 8) ... j/k lol, not likely:p -
Zip Drives.... and the people who love them
reversing_drive replied to sapiens74's topic in Hardware
I like Zip Drives. Though their practibility is not credible due to the fact that not many people use/have zip drives. They are practible in the sense, that you do not need burning software, they are quick to erase, add new files. Generally i find them a lot more easy to use, don't have to worry about scraching your RWCD. Everyone would like them and use them if they just had've replaced floppies with them, seriously i can't believe the floppy drive has been hanging around so long. 1.44mb of Storage, Grouse Man:D!!! Zip drives could've and should've replaced floppy drives by now. But as things work out, CD-RW is definatley the way to go because all new computers have a CD drive, like someone mentioned earlier. Cheers, -
If anyone does get it/ have it, could you's post it up somewhere, i don't have XP, i don't even know how the boot logo looks. Don't tell me it has clouds on it please:p Cheers,

Now i don't know.., heck i don't think many people know what the deal is with smart tags in IE6. But from what i have heard it's evil 8), Micro$ofts way to take over the internet or something... From what i understand it adds links to webpages (Which the webmaster has no idea of) to propell traffic in such a way to benefit Microsoft. Anyway here's a site which discusses smart tags a bit. http://www.anybrowser.com/smarttags.html Yeah like i said i'm really a bit in the dark about what all this means, but if you know any more on the topic, please share with us Cheers, PS: There is a META tag you can add to your pages to prevent smart tags infecting your site, currently it is supposed to be: <meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE"> Though this may yet be changed by M$.

I know this has nothing to do with the current discussion, however i need to express some negetive critisism of Windows Update. I was up[censored] critical updates patch at the same time as i was editing my post above, i the middle of the whole editing part, as i'm typing away... Windows update finnishes, comes up with it's "Do you want to restart your computer" popup, and apparently hitting the space-bar when a button is selected in a pop-up will cause the action of that button to occurr, thus resulting in my computer restarting in the middle of downloading other files, sending email.. & everything AAARRRGGHHH!!!!!! Sorry, i just had to tell someone ;(

I started using Morpheus ver 1.3 on Win2K SP2 about three months ago. I have never been able to D/L anything higher than 128kb. I read somewhere i think it was at CNET's user comments about Morpheus, and some dude reckons the option of higher bitrates was dropped in ver 1.3, whereas in ver. 1.2 the option was there. This dude was rather p!ssed because he couldn't get hold of ver 1.2 anymore. I applied the patch which came out a few weeks ago, which updated 1.3 to 1.33, This was just some internal patch there aren't any different options added or withdrawn. Cheers, /EDIT There are some disturbing comments here about Morpheus: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-189...0.top.6525083-1 I Hope they aren't true. 8) Another thing i have 83mp3's with a quality of 256kb, they have never ever been requested for download by any other users. Kazza is similar right, what quality does it allow?

A security measure against viruses??
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Just picking up on what you said, BrianF. I realise that many viruses would not be hindered in any way through restricted user privelages, since most viruses are merely "annoyance type viruses", which there prime objective is to spread as fast as possible clogging up email servers, and services accross the internet, where some of the variants may or may not cause dammage to the users system. However i was more interested in disscussing weather user privelages would restrict in any way the liklihood of highly damaging viruses being able to actually modify, delete, corrupt ect.. system files and other files which are otherwise restricted in most cases to 'readonly' basis for "Guest-user-privelages". Wouldn't most system critical files be protected through security's set in the NTFS Isn't a virus (in most cases) essentially an application which has to run under the user environment which has been set? For example, user privelages restrict installation of programs in a "Guest logon" because the system will not allow any system changes while a user is logged on under those restricted privelages. And APK, i'm interested in what you mention about "hidden share/hidden user" is there actually a way to bypass the restrictions put on a particular "user-logon"? And what does all this mean in the case of hackers, trying to damage or modify system critical files on your computer? I suppose the fact that most viruses aren't written specifically for NT, rather for MS Windows as a whole, some viruses probably are unable to function properlly under NT depending on what user actions are allowed under a particular logon, another thing with Win2K "Windows File Protection" probably would step in for milder, more obvious attacks on the system, or? Anyway some thoughts, Cheers, PS: Thanks 4 your feedback:p -
Sorry, Anti-MS was the wrong word, what i really meant was that many articles i have read on Smart-Tags for IE are rather narrow veiwed, they only look at the negative aspects. When obviously now i understand that in some (Not all cases) Smart-Tags could have been beneficial to many internet users, to find information in a logical kinda way i suppose. Now BrianF, allthough a little of the topic, i agree with you M$ can really be a pain in the arse, forcing you to have moviemaker installed with ME & XP, when 90% of computer useres probably don't have the hardware to make movies, and the 10% that do 70% would buy "Real" video editing software. Media Player 6.4 is just fine and dandy, i hate media player 7 (Bloated Garbage). Office assistants give me the sh!ts. As for Adobe acrobat reader, i hate that you can't scroll using the mouse wheel in the same way you would on a web page, plus you can't scroll using arrow keys:( Anyway i'm getting a bit of the topic now, Cheers.

Thanks for the Feedback 'OLEerror' yeah i wasn't quit sure of the benefits of smart tags untill your post. I also didn't know that they are actually turned off by default & that they aren't infact included in IE6, i guess the sources which i read about it probably are a little biased(Anti-M$) or something. It looks like it was probably a good idea. Cheers,

I love it when this topic is brought up now and again Won't be long before some dude comes in and starts blazing away about how good ME is or something, it's usually quit funny to read , like the last one you were involved in BrianF. Yeah i agree WindowsME is a JOKE!, Windows98 is OK, if you only use it for games. But Win2K ROCKS!, i love it. I'm also quit a big fan of NT4 still, I mean it got 2K where it is today, and it does quit fine if your not a gamer. Hey thats my veiw, Cheers.

Whenever i install Win9x, 2K or NT.. the first visit to windowsupdate i allways have the option of Downloading (for example) "Swedish Menu's and Dialogues for Internet Explorer", amoungst a whole lot of other languages for IE. Usually i take care of Critical updates first, then come back for some of the other updates. No Languages for IE are to be found , I search all of http://www.microsoft.com, I search through search engines, the entire Internet Basically and can never find (in my case) "Swedish Menu's and Dialogues for IE" . OK SO my Question is: How do i fool windowsupdate into thinking it is my first visit? Is there any .ini files i should modify or something? Any help is appreciated, Cheers.

Thanx heaps for that Korin, I haven't been able to try it out yet, cos i'm at uni but will do as soon as i get home. But yeah, it is exactley what i have been looking for, istead of deleting "wuhistv3.log" do you reckon i could just move it temporarily, while i get 'Swedish menu's & Dialogues' then move it back. Thanks again, Cheers,

I have looked through "Internet Options" in IE5.5 & under the advanced section, i can't find the option of enabling more than 2 downloads at once in IE. I am sure there is an option where i can change it. Otherwise, how would i go about changing it in the registry? Cheers,

Quote: Try this *********************************************** *** AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus System Free Edition *** *********************************************** 10x better then Mcafee Do you have a URL for us? Cheers,

Some more info on the issue: http://www.mcafeehelp.com/displayDoc.asp?docID=694¶m1=246¶m2=¶m3= Apparently it only affects Windows2000, when IE6 is installed.

OK, thanx for the feedback guys, So FrogM. you said the drivers are native in Win2K, Does that mean that there should be drivers in the folder i specified before? Can you plz check what is in your folder Because all i have is two '.ds' files and three empty folders, as you will see in my previous post "Technology Without An Intersting Name" * Cute:p Cheers

I'm surprised that this wasn't resolved during IE6's extensive BETA period. Or that there was any documentation of known issues:( I mean don't tell me i was the only one to stumble across the conflict Quote: Originally Posted by Igor Same **** here except i run McAfee 4.5 and IE 6. IE6 is really to blame, I mean A LOT of people (50 million i think Mcafee quotes on there Packaging) Use Mcafee for Virus protection. Therefore you would expect IE6 to add to security in other aspects not cripple exsisting security measures. I'm not saying IE6 is inferior in security, i'm sure it is amoungst the best of the web browsers. It's just ashame it interfers with 'well matured' virusscanning software. No doubt, Mcafee will have to come out with the patch, Micro$oft will offcoarse not claim the responsibility. ;( Cheers/

Good on you, Yeah i had to revert back to my IE5.5 SP2 installation. Looks like anyone who runs Mcafee 5.21 + IE6 would have problems with webscanx.exe Surely one of these must come out with a patch soon to solve this. Does anyone run Mcafee 5.21 successfully in WinXP, considering it is built with IE6? Cheers, PS, Glad to Helpout Tom

Anyone else have this? Anyway the HPSoftware that comes with the Scanner is non-NT compliant:( Though recently HP has got of it's bum and made NT compliant software for this scanner which can be downloaded at: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/software/sj398en.exe.html Though this software doesn't work it installs OK and some aspects of the software does work, though the actual program for scanning won't even load up, it freezes at the splash screen. Does - "The Twain Driver Could Not Be Loaded" mean anything to anyone. This is the only reason i need to have Win2K/Win98 dual boot on my machine, that is the software works fine in Win98. Any Help Appreciated:P
