OK I don't know much (Technical Detail that is... ) But i know Win2K has A LOT of Disk Activity during Startup. Now the significant difference between your two systems i see here i relation to that aspect is the size of your HD. Now i'm not sure if Win2K checks the entire disk during bootup, or if so, what it scans the disks for. I doubt it checks the entire disk for errors every boot, though there may be other routine processes that require scanning the HD for info of some sort or other, indexing service:confused ;( Anyway, that is the only possibility i can think of In that case maybe an upgrade from 5400rpm to 7200rpm is due... it seems to be the bottle neck to me. Cheers, PS: What File system due you use for most of your partitions. If you use NTFS on all your partitions, then it could be the volume information, MFT ect.. being updated/verified every boot. NTFS keeps all kinds of records on all the files ect.. such as security, file info(indexing service) ect..

You run IE6, Right... Yeah uninstall IE6 (If You Can ) It will fix the problem. --- I Had that very problem when i upgraded to IE6. It was really giving me the sh!ts, I was uninstalling, reinstalling Mcafee to no avail I hope you saved the uninstall info to roll-back to IE5.X Cheers,
-
Have you kept IE5.5 backed-up? Try Uninstalling IE6, It should tell you there if you can roll back to IE5.5 I have had problems with IE6 aswell, I am unable to even select "Save Target As", also Download Accellerator stopped working, Webscanx.exe for Mcafee VirusScan (Scans Download Files, Web Pages ect...) was closed down every boot because of errors. So i have rolled back to IE5.5 SP2, thank god i kept the uninstall info. I mean what does IE6 really have to offer? I didn't notice any performance increase, feels the same, oh except the cookie filtering, thats cool. Anyway, Hope you sort it out.

Since upgrading to IE6 i am unable to 'right-click' hyperlinks and select 'Save Target as..' This is quit annoying since if i want to save .doc, .pdf, .ppt, ect... I have to open them first in the browser then 'File' -> 'Save As' Anyone else have this problem?? Are there any settings that need to be changed? Yeah cos' it worked fine in IE5.5 SP2, Though since upgrading to IE6 the option is "Greyed out" Help Appreciated, Cheers.

Oh well... I am still unable to "Save Target As.." in IE6, the option has never been active in the last two weeks or so, I was a real fan of saving files corresponding with hyperlinks without First have to sit and whatch the thing load, the Save from 'File Menu' ;( However i have managed to find an allternative, Download Accelerator has right click function for links, "Download with DAP" But i prefer 'save target as', it's quicker and you easily select where you want to save the file. So if it is just some lousy option in IE that needs changing i would really appreciate knowing that. Cheers,

How Big Is your Registry?
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Man thats huge 8) Clutch. I wasn't really sure of what increments to use in the Poll: I thought my Registry would be big, Apps: Acrobat4(Full Prod.), AOE2, Dreamweaver4, Encarta99, Eudora5, Fireworks3, Homesite4.5, Office2000 Premium ed.(Full Install), MS Access97, Nutscrap4.7, CorelPhotohouse2, Java 2 SDK Ver1.2.2 Stardard Ed., Java 2 SDK Enterprise Ed. Ver1.2, Mcafee 5.21 + Many Small apps Morpheus, ICQ, Winamp, Winzip, Zonealarm ect.. Though they must not be so registry dependant huh? I would say the M$ software would be contributing to the Reg size the most huh, Visio, MSDN ect.. ? Yeah you have to admit it is reassuring running all that under Win2K, It simply wouldn't work in Win9x/ME So what is the registry size of W2K just after a clean install? I probably should've checked that first. You should probably adjust the Poll to properly accomodate for you, I think only you (The Moderator) can do that, right? -
Cant delete or rename local folders once I've changed anythi

I also have that problem, It's a real B!tch. Unfortunatley the only thing that i found that works is a freakin restart I'm not sure but maybe a log-off - log-on may also work, either way it is a pain in the butt! It couldn't be a bug, could it it sure seems like one. I have yet to try ending the 'explorer.exe' task to fix it, which DosFreak suggested. Anyway i'm relieved i'm not the only one with this nuisance problem. I run Win2K SP2, IE5.5 SP2, Indexing Service 'OFF', Mcafee Viruscanner 5.21 'ON' Cheers, -
Someone mentioned somewhere on these boards about 'msconfig' for XP, and that it can be used under Win2K. How would i go about copying msconfig to Win2K? Is it just 'msconfig.exe' -> /system32 I don't have XP so could someone post the file/s up on the web? Or is it allready availabe somewhere on the web? Cheers,
-
Thanks i got msconfig to work in Win2K allright, now i remember where i read about it, check out thread below: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15446&highlight=msconfig Cheers,

I don't have WinXP, I want to run msconfig in Win2K, Someone mentioned it could be done using msconfig from WinXP (or WinME) by just copying it to Win2k.

How does IE6 measure up, speed-wise on slower machines (PII 400mhz, 128mb PC100 RAM). I know when i tried Netscape6 it was very slow on startup, and it had a whole lot of other programs & sh!t included which i didn't want. How customisable is the installation of IE6 for Win2K SP2? I'm not really into skins and other "Bells & Whistles", can these be disabled on installation, and they do retain the original IE skin, right??? My 4 Priorities: i) Security ii) Stability iii) Speed:D iv) Lean:p(Not Bloated) So how does IE6 measure up? Cheers,

I only have one physical COM port (Serial Port), though as you know when you have comunication devices such as PCI modems, they are assigned a COM port number. I am now up to number 10, though i only have one PCI slot modem. The reason for this is i have dual boot with Win98, when i hibernate with Win2K and boot Win98, then return to Win2K the modem does not respond and after a reboot the port cannot be opened. So i have to reinstall the modem drivers ect... Though every time i reinstall the modem it is allocted a higher COM port number. The other COM ports are labelled "(in use)" Naturally COM port #1 is "(in use)" because it is assigned to the serial port. So i am asking how can i clear up the other COM Ports Suggestions Appreciated:p

Cummulating virtual COM ports!!!
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Below is a step by step approach of what i'm talking about: Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> System Tools -> Device Manager -> Modems -> "Select Your Modem" -> 'right click' Properties -> Advanced -> Advanced Port Settings Now you'll see buffers ect... + "COM PORT NUMBER" My Modem is at #10 Every number up to 10 has the dialogue (in use) next to them. The problem is: I Have no other Communication devices Please if anyone knows how to clear this up it would be much appreciated. Cheers. -
OK, I Will Thanks for all the feedback Cheers.

Considering Service Packs can be slipstreamed back onto a Win2K CD, i'm curious, could the same be done with IE5.5 and in the future maybe IE6 That would be cool And hey, it would be typically Micro$oft anyway, keeping the dominance in the Browser field.
-
I know, i ask this question for everything:o, but hey...I'm curious, and if it's possible i might well use it and so will others . Firstly i haven't seen the Office 2000 Service Pack 2 for separate Download anywhere, though i'm sure it is, so lets skip that problem. Now has anyone suceeded in including the service pack onto a new CD with Office 2000. (I have Premium ed.) Yeah, well any feedback welcome. Cheers.

So What Cluster Size is Optimal for Win2K
reversing_drive posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have heard now that FAT32 is faster than NTFS, So my Question is: When formating FAT32 (I Like Using Partition Magic:p) what cluster size makes for faster running of the OS. My mindset is that larger cluster sizes will decrease fragmentation because files have more slack around them, known as "cluster overhang". Since NT supports 64k clusters would that be the best bet? Is there any disadvantage in large cluster sizes, where in this day and age where free disk space is no longer a problem with 20+G HD's. I'm thinking 5G for Win2K, 2G For all Apps & 500Mb Primary infront of 5G partition (the start of the HD) for the Pagefile. Any suggestions? -
So What Cluster Size is Optimal for Win2K
reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Cluster overhang: Say you have 8k cluster sizes, well if you have 100 files in that partition using 1k each, then you will use 800k of hardisk space, regardless of the fact that in total the files are only containing 100k of information.l Cluster overhang is when you have a file that is 9k in size and it uses up one cluster and extends to the next, if the next is full then it goes to any other spare cluster on the Hard Disk. The smaller the cluster size, the more fragments any given file is allocated across the Hard Disk, whether the fragments are contiguos or spread all over the HD(fragmentation). Try this in Win2K, select a couple of files (lots of small files would be a good example) then press alt + Enter, you will see the properties 'Size' & 'Size on Disk', These will be very different if you have large cluster sizes and small files. The only disadvantage i can see with using large clusters is it uses more space, (Cluster overhang is wasting the space, esp with lots of Temporary Internet Files). The reason there is less fragmentation with large clusters for some files is that, frequently updated files, such as log files, ini & system files can increase and decrease in size slightly without needing to find a spare cluster. Anyway, thats my understanding, Anyone else? -
I was wondering if people using XP could post any cool wallpapers used in XPs desktop themes. I have collected the best ones from WinMe & Win2K and would love any cool ones used in XP. The only one i have seen in screenshots of XP is the Red Sand one with the Moon in the background. My favorite from WinME & Win2K is the one with the rocky mountains and clouds (From ME). Thanks.

Are they Fullsize?? They seem a little small, like 600x800 or something. Cheers.

reversing_drive replied to reversing_drive's topic in Software
The Laptop is on Dual-boot with Win98 which came with the laptop originally two years ago with DVD player software and i have played DVD's OK, though idon't want to have to reboot just to play a DVD:p So OK i'll just get a crack then;) Cheers -
I am sure this question has been asked an answered many times. But anyways, ;( How can i get Dual Boot working using boot.ini in WinNT4 under this setup: First Primary Partition - WinNT4 (NTFS) Second Primary Partition - Win98 (FAT32) PS. Does the boot.ini have to be used with WinNT4 or can it be used from the FAT32 Partition when it is set active. I have only ever successfully got the boot.ini file working when i had Dual-Boot between WinNT4 & Win95, when both were in the same primary FAT16 Partition. Anyway, appreciateyurhelp:D

Has anyone been able to get Driver (By GT Interactive) to work in Win2K. It is the best car game, it Rocks When i set the config, it comes up with "Configuration Error". I have checked out DirectX (I have DirectX8) It seems that it is not supporting AGP acceleration. Though i have a 8mb AtiRage AGP2x Video Card. + PEntium II 400mhz, 128mb pc100 RAM. Cheers.
