    Desktop Garabge

How do i keep the desktop clean from anoying program installations and ignorant computer uses, It can often become a Shortcut & User Files nightmare. What would be ideal for me is if i could set an expiry time for everything on the desktop, that is infinite exsistence for items i want to stay and anything added after that has a life time of 1 week then is automatically deleted from the desktop. Is there any Apps out there that do that or hell even registry tweaks that might simulate that? Or could i manipulate the task schedualler to do that sort of function. All i can think of is a primitive technique which involves using the attribute "Archive" and then a .bat file in the startup folder which deletes (moves or even zips with pkzip) everything which has the certain default file attribute. Suggestions? Thanks heaps, Cheers.

    Connecting up HDDs and CDs

I would go with tis configuration: Primary 1 [HD1 - With WinXP] Slave 1 [CD Drive] Primary 2 [CDRW/DVD Drive] Slave 2 [HD2] That way data transfer between hard disks is faster (different channels), so you could have the Page file on the second. Faster transfer from HD1 to Cd Buring (different Channels) More reliable Disk to Disk copying, again because they are on different channels. Anyway thats what i'd do, Oh yeah when playing games that require a CD, faster data transfer, different channels. And when watching DVD's different channel from Operating system, so probably smoother. Cheers,

LAN shared Drive Access without password

I have two computers on a LAN, Both have D: drive shared Both have a user called NETWORK with Password A (General Computer User Privelages) Security on D: drive on both computers is Authenticated users only, not Everyone (which is default) Now here's the problem: After fresh boot from both machines, when computer 1 tries to access Computer 2's D: Drive, there will be a popup asking for username and password (Network usernamen used) However if computer 2 tries to access computer 1's D: drive no username or password is needed, it just accesses without any hiccups. How can i fix so both computers need to login to access on anothers drives? Cheers,

    Internet Explorer 7.0

Since picking up Mozilla 1.1 a couple of months ago, I have become very fond of the package. The Refined version of Netscape? Well on the homepage they have a link to Phoenix 0.4 (Oceano) The refined or Mozilla without the Fat, they claim... anyway based on Mozilla. Anyone given it a shot, looks kinda promising, i'll give it a few more builds before I d/l & ins. Cheers.

    Asking a Favour

I don't have XP or .NET , I Use Win2K, though i have this hobby of collecting the wallpaper picies that come with the Different Windows OS's I have the Win2K ones (duh...) + WinMe ones, though no XP ones or If .NET has new interesting ones i'd love to have 'em too Since 2K & ME, MS has bundled some really awesome wallpaper backdrops with it's OS's, don't you think ??? My current favourite is "Cliff in Clouds" from ME then "Smokey Light" Do XP Home & PRO have different wallpapers ? Otherwise it would be really cool if someone could ZIP & send the .jpg's in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\ folder from their XP installation Just send it to r e v e r s i n g _ d r i v e {at} o z e m a t e . c o m (without spaces and replace {at} with appropriate symbol) Cheers, PS, I'd love to get the ones from .NET if they are new. Thanks.

    Best Nvidia Drivers???

OK who is an expert on nVidia Cards & Drivers? There are just so many detonator drivers out that i was wondering which would work the best for my system, relizing that the newest drivers won't be the best for my system. Win 2K SP3 PCI nVidia RIVA TNT2 32mb (M64) AMD K6-2 333 (3D Now) 160mb Ram (povo SD) DirectX 7 (Native 2K Ver) As you can see i probably wouldn't benefit much fro the latest drivers considering i'm not using latest directX or playing the latest games. So basically what i think i'm after is the most stable, most suitable for AMD/DirectX 7/W2K/SDRAM combination. The Games that i use on this system are: Unreal Tournament, Driver, Quake2, DuesX, Halflife. Is there anywhere where i can see the individual tweaks & Additions to different Driver builds? Cheers, [/b]

    Best Nvidia Drivers???

Quote: 23.11's or 28.32's should be good for your system. Grab all your Nvidia files here: http://www.guru3d.com/files/detonator/. Also, I would upgrade to DX 8.1b, too. H'bout 23.12 ? I have looked a bit in the forums at guru3d.com and 23.11 seems to be the pick for the TNT2 M64. But there is also 23.12 Is there anywhere i can find what fixes have been done in 23.12 since 23.11, the download file for 23.12 is like 2mb smaller!!! Thanks, BTW, it is a good site. Cheers.

Quote: By the way, even if you install Media Player 7, or 8 (or 9 Beta), you can still use Media Player 6.4 by running "mplayer2.exe" manually. And you can even re-associate the file types with 6.4 in the View->Options->Formats menu. kewl...

    Media Player 6.4 Codecs

Thanks guys, Yeah Tomay, i had allready found that site But it is for MS Media Player 8.0 also it has win98me in the url. So i didn't think that it would work for Media player 6.4 for Win2K. The other Link is Windows Media9, isn't that beta stuff? ;( But if you guys say so i'll give it a shot, I've just done a driveimage, so i got nothing to loose! I know i could simply install MS Media Player 7, 8 or 9beta. There's just to much woffle in the later versions, 6.4 works fine, i does everything i need (play music videos (mpegs & avi's)). I use other programs (Which are 10x better) for playing MP3's and extracting music from my CD's, and making playlists and compilations. I got the latest verion of DivX and i installed Quicktime 5, so i should probably manage, though thanks again for the feedback. Cheers. [/b]

    LAN protocols needed ???

Quote: I would strongly recommend that you upgrade your network... It's not very expensive to set up a 100 mbit LAN... I seriosly need to UG pretty much everything, PII 400 and a K6 333. The AMD K6 333mhz is a mini tower, so alas only two PCI slots, both used for TNT2 32mb & other Sound Card. So i'm stuck with ISA on that one anyway. Though there is definatley a place and time for upgrading, "My Place" and "Future Time" currently the situation

    The Best MP3-CD Burning Program?

What is the Best Cd Burning Application when it comes to burning CD to be Played in an MP3 Player. My obvious concern is compatibilty, because i have heard some MP3 players are touchy and will not play MP3's if the filenames are to long or if Bitrate excedes 256kbps or if VBR is used ect... What CD-Burning Program best handles all these different varibales and DO any that you have used have any nifty 8) little extras? What are your experiences... Cheers,

MS Photoeditor Not visible, unless MAXIMISED

I Have this problem with MS Photoeditor, bundled with MS Office 2000 Prem. You see if i open a .jpg file or something, MS photoeditor is in the taskbar, except not on the screen, if i right click on the MS PhotoEd in the taskbar 'select' Maximise, then all is fine . As soon as i select Restore, it disappears ;( I have had this problem with several separate installations of Win2K. Is there a fix to Center a restored window to the center of the screen, because it appears that it is out of bounds, off the edge of the screen when it's window is restored. Cheers,

    GTA2

Where can i get GTA2??? I have been looking everywhere to get the game for PC, Computer shops, web sites ect... Though no luck so far GTA1 and GTA3 seem easy enough to get hold of, though GTA2 seems a rarity. I mean my computer won't run GTA3 (It is meant to be a kickass game, though my computer lacks the gift of speed). And GTA1 is just poor when when i could have GTA2. Though i gotta say i miss riding motorbikes in GTA2. Anyone no where i can get older games, here in Australia for the PC? Cheers, PS, Legal ones only, i allready own a pirate version, no shame in admitting that when i am genuinlly trying to get the legal version.

    Security & Stability

Now i was quick to make my slipstreamed Win2K SP3 CD and reinstalling on my computer. After that IE6 was also installed. Now after all this controversy over the EULA, i have decided to give windowsupdate the flick. Considering the superiority of this operating system compared to it's predisessors, i don't see that windowsupdate is necessary any longer. I mean lets be realistic, how many more undiscoverd bugs and security holes can there be left in such a tried and tested operating system? Now, please, i'm a reffering to the home user basis here, novice or power user. The business environment is a different ball park altogether. My point is that, 30% of internet users are running Win98, with IE4 or if lucky IE5, many whom have never visited windowsupdate, their computers function and thats all their concerned about, right? ;( Here i am, a regular joe, with no particularly sensitive data on my machine, i have no enemies or foes really, i don't use my computer in a malicous way. I use caution with email attachment. I am running Win2K SP3, IE6, Latest Mcafee Viruscan and Firewall products. Lets face it, am i really a target for hackers viruses or what not? I just keep thinking about those people out there running windows 95 and 98 and have never had any security or privacy threats. Some using Mcafee v3 or nothing at all, running spyware like kazaa ect.. I mean, realistically what are the risks that anything on my computer or any use of my computer will significantly compromise my privacy or the safety of my data? Anyway just a thought I am now just waiting on IE6's SP1, then i think i'll sit on this configuration for quite some time. PS. Don't get me wrong, I think windows update may be quite important for corporate environments, especially where latest harware is in use. In my case though i have a Pentium II 400mhz, so i think the device drivers ect.. are as up to date as theyll ever be. Cheers, Security is Relative ;(

    Security & Stability

Hey guys thanks for your response, Your replies are no doubt pretty valid, i probably should have said also that i am on a dial-up connection, which means my computer is not plugged into the internet 24/7 at best with dial-up a couple of hours, and during peak hours i get booted off after 3hrs from my ISP. Anyway regarding trojans and stuff, normally that kind of protection is delivered from your VS/FW Product, i'm not sure, but i can't remember many patches from windows update that directly help in virus protection, or hacker protection. ;( I haven't been there since the release of SP3, so i don't know what patches are available now, but usually it's stuff like vunrebility in windows media player or patches for Outlook Express, then there's the extra downloads and stuff which i don't really need. The patches for IE, i usually dl, but then again, it is usually stuff for redirecting of a malicous web-site operator or faking the location of a file being downloaded or something, but i don't generally visit any malicouse sites. ([censored]o ;( and what not) And regarding being an average joe, i meant in the use of my computer, not in the knowledge sense. I use caution where applicable & take my backups ect... Actually i use Powerquests DriveImage 2002, really is a great product:D I admit though zombie for someone's DoS Army would probably rain my parade F & T, drink more whiskey!

    Messaging across a LAN

This is the first time i've had a LAN (2x Win2k boxes) since like 1993 or something when i had Win3.11 & Win95 on a LAN. I remember i was able to send Messages that popped up at the other computer back then. I can't remember what the program was called, i think it was a native Windows app, thopugh not sure their either. Is there anything like that in Win2K? I have looked though have found naught. I mean i suppose i could get ICQ, Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger or other bloatware functioning over the LAN but all i want is a text popup screen, No contact lists, wizards, emoticons, sound/video conferencing, visual effects :x /cartoons , eyecandy or ridiculous typing noises or whatever else they include in them these days. Is it possible that the software that i used back then was something from novell or whoever i bought the NIC's from? Cheers,

    Internet Connection Sharing NOT Working!

Hi Again, After many enjoyous (is that a word ;( ) hours of LAN gaming i finally decided to get down to business 8) . (A continuation (is that a word?) of my post of unable to get a LAN working ). That is to get access to my single CD-burner, Zip-Drive, Printer and Internet Connection working from both Win2K boxes. Well i have succeded with flying colours in all areas except one, and that is Internet Connection sharing. What is the trick with that anyway? Under properties for my dial-up connection, there is a TAB called sharing. Well i have ticked both boxes there. Is there anything else i need to do? Oh another thing, which unfortunatley i think may be the cause, i am using Mcafee's firewall, though only on the dialup connection, not for the LAN. When i try to connect with the other computer, there is no prompt from Mcafee so in a way i don't think it could be that, because it warns when apps/services try to access the internet. Well your tips are greatly appreciated. Please if anyone is using Internet Connection Sharing and Mcafee's firewal (the one with Mcafee VS v6.02), or any other software firewall product please let me know if there were any steps you needed to take to get this to work, Cheers & many thanks

    Who's leasing my domain name???

How do i find out which company has issued a certiain domain? for example www.bonkers.com was sold to Fred, by [some company]. Is there an administrative website (verisign?) which tells you what [some company] sold (more correctly "leased") www.bonkers.com to Fred? Because companies such as (here in Australia) Netregistry, Webtrader ect... sell domain names, which if you don't pay the monthly/yearly fee or whatever, they take it of you. So really they own it 8) , not you , they leased it right? ;( Well my problem is i bought a domain (with redirection) with one company then years later bought webhosting from another company which required a domain name, so i used my first one. The thing is i'm paying domain name keeping costs to both companies, but surely only one can own it, not both. So i want to check with i don't know where, but thats why i'm asking, is there a website/service which tells which company is isued with a particular domain name? Cheers,

    Who's leasing my domain name???

Thanks Silver-Dagger That is exactly what i was looking for, really appreciated BladeRunner, Thanks, what i found was pretty much what your saying, i can be confusing i admitt. Seems a little stupid that you can't transfer your domain name registration to different companies, especially when some have higher prices than others, also what i found that since it was a fairly long time ago now, the same company doesn't sell the package which it did back then, consequently the new equivalent package is cheaper. It is also a hassle when trying to get support, they ask what package your on and you say this, and they say ohh... ;( Cheers,
