iks replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
Hi! I am a happy user of Norton Internet Security 2003... That means that it works just great for me. And I switched to 2003 because I had some problems with 2002... But it all depends on what kind of problems you have... Hehe good luck, -
Hi there! From a time to time I can find something like this in my WEB log files (C:\WINDOWS\system32\Logfiles\W3SVC1)... I wonder what this is... Was someone trying to attack my system? Hi! Yeah IIS was giving out 404, that's good but some of them were 500 (Internal Server Error) and so on... Okay now I've got one more question: When I try to telnet to my XP box via port 17 I get this strange qotations... They are making me a little worried: Code: iks@iksbox2:~$ telnet <my_domain> 17Trying <my_IP>...Connected to <my_domain>.Escape character is '^]'."We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it." George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)Connection closed by foreign host.iks@iksbox2:~$ telnet <my_domain> 17Trying <my_IP>...Connected to <my_domain>.Escape character is '^]'."The secret of being miserable is to have leisure to bother about whether you are happy or not. The cure for it is occupation." George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)Connection closed by foreign host.iks@iksbox2:~$ telnet <my_domain> 17Trying <my_IP>...Connected to <my_domain>.Escape character is '^]'."When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of, he always declares that it is his duty." George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)Connection closed by foreign host.iks@iksbox2:~$ telnet <my_domain> 17Trying <my_IP>...Connected to <my_domain>.Escape character is '^]'."Man can climb to the highest summits, but he cannot dwell there long." George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)Connection closed by foreign host. Okay what is this? Some of my friends are having the same 'problem' but not my brother (he is not running IIS). On port 17 I see TCPSVCS.EXE application. Thanks for everything,

Hi, I am using Sygate Office Network 4.2 (build 803) for NAT on my Gateway computer... But the problem is that it stops working after some days (usually after one or two days of uptime) and sometimes restarting the sygate engine fixes the problem but other times not and I have to restart my server. That's pretty bad and I hate doing this because the server is down for that time... Is anyone having the same problems with Sygate? I've been using it on a previos system and I had the same problems... And by the way is there any other good NAT proggy available (except XP's Internet Connection Sharing)? Thanks,

It's not a bug, it's something wrong with your video file. Something must be wrong with keyframes of indexes... try to open this video with VirtualDUB (http://www.virtualdub.org/) and fix it...

Oh godness why are people always using some kind of hacks and file editings to remove such a simple things like Messenger? Everyone says: Messenger is sh** you need to edit this file, go to add/remove programs and if you have some luck and if you ruined this file the right way, you would be able to remove Messenger... Oh please... and all this anti-spy-sthings... Well okay... everything you have to do is: 1. Click START | RUN... | type "gpedit.msc" and click OK The "Group Policy" window shuld appear; 2. On the left-side tree go to: "Administrative Templates" -> "Windows Components" -> "Windows Messenger" 3. Now on the right side "Do now allow Windows Messenger to be rung" and "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially" appears. Double click on first option ("Do now allow Windows Messenger to be run") to see it's properies and set it to "Enabled". 4. Go to Next Setting ("Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially") and Enable it too. And now Windows Messenger shuld never ever appear again... But I must say that I got used to it and now I really like it...

Which is better? Sygate Firewall or Norton Internet Security
iks replied to pr-man's topic in Security
Hi... Sorry because this is probably not the right place to post this question but anyway: ____________________________________________________ I've done this before but since I reinstalled my WindowsXP Pro and Norton Firewall 2002, the Firewall won't let me to access my IISs from any computer outside my network... As far as I remember (from the previous system) when I try to accesss my FTP or WEB server I am asked for the first time if I shuld allowed or block this kind of connection... But now the connection is just refused and I was never asked to allow or block it. I can't just go and allow ports such as 21 and 80 because they will be open for any application... So how do I manually allow the access to my IIS? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ And the second problem is that access to my Remote Desktop is refused too... I don't even know what port is used for this connection... and it is probably changing... So how do I allow Remote Desktop service in Norton Firewall? ____________________________________________________ Thanks, -
Hello... Reinstall audio drivers. [ OK ] Of course I replaced audio drivers with nevest version from Creative webpage... but I am still recieving this annoying error message... And it's just this error message - my sound blaster works fine... Thanks,

Hi, As far as I remember it was somewhere under this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion It worked for Windows98/ME so I am not sure how's with WindowsXP... -Andrej

Hmmm but computer still goes to standby mode, what is still annoying... You shuld try to set that computer never goes to standby mode... It's somewhere under this power button too... But most of today's DVD players can prevent your computer to go to the standby mode... Just chechk player's options... You shuld find it somewhere...

Quote: Keeps saying that file is being used by another program or process. Then after i tried to delete it CPU use of explorer.exe goes to 99% Yeah ist's because Explorer is really "using" this file - as you know Explorer always tries to open media files in it's preview mode (bottom left side of Explorer's window)... Just close the Explorer and try deleting the file in Console: Start | Run... | cmd.exe -> OK | CD x:\folder\with\your\video\file DEL your_video_file.avi Hope it helps...

With Windows 2000 and Windows XP Microsoft decided to allow low level driver access only for programs running with administrator rights, because of security aspects. But in practice there must be a way to allow CD/DVD recording for non-administrators and being able to decide which users may record CDs/DVDs and which users may not. The way to solve this situation is to install Nero BurnRights. With Nero BurnRights, the system administrator can assign a specific group the rights to record CD's/DVD's on the system. (Copy/Paste from: http://www.ahead.de/en/content/c1023694368810.html) Download the tool here: ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroBurnRightsInstaller.exe

Hello... Is there any good (or better: free) program or something to view and kill running applications and services on remote computer without having a special client software to connect to remote computer? Something like RemotelyAnywhere does, but it has too many functions... Thanks,

Hi there! I have created a new username for accessing my FTP server which is running under IIS. Everything works fine but I don't want this user to be shown in Welcome screen... Under Local Security Plicy I tried to add this username to Deny Logon Locally line, but then I am not able to logon to my FTP from anywhere... So what shuld I do? Thanks,
-
Thanks, CUViper - it works... nice hint... Clutch - yeah I believe it's because of security reasons... but actually I am not logging in locally when I try to logon to my FTP server from some other computer in or our of my LAN... Thanks,
-
Almost everything can be burned with Nero... It always corrects the block size... so the burned image works great...

And what's the difference between updates form windowsupdate.microsoft.com and XP service pack 1?

Hi there! I've got nVidia Geforce2MX and since I installed WindowsXP, framerates in most games (old and new) have dramatically fallen. I am using the lastest Detonator from nvidia.com: ver. 28.23. If I try to run a game in software mode it runs okay (on a lower resolution)... The framerates are almost the same at 640x480 and at 1024x768... Shuld I try some earlyer Detonator drivers? Which one? Thanks,

Hello. How do I define Custom User groups like in Windows 2000 via Control Panel | User Accounts | and there was some Advance tabs so I was able to create new users, create new user groups with custom privileges and so on. In Windows XP there's just two types of User accounts by default: Computer administrator (which have too much privileges for some users) and Limited user account (which have too little privileges...) And how do I create a FTP user account? I don't want to be shown in Welcome screen and so on. If I set "Can not logon locally" in gpedit.msc, I can't logon via FTP too, from any computer inside and outside my network... Thanks for help,

Hi! Thanks for the answer... About the posts - hehe I noticed that we had the same number of posts too... But now it is all different Somehow I know how the permissions for some files of folders can be changed but is it the same for system folders? I mean - If you are logged in as Limited user, you can't Install the programs because you do not have permissions to write/change 'System32' and 'Program Files' and of course some other folders... So if I insert 'Users' group under Write permissions for those folders then Limited user will be able to Install new programs? Thanks again.
