    xine multi region de coding?

I don't know about Xine (I only played with it for a short while before giving up and going back to mplayer in disgust) but while I was trying to get DVD playback through my Hollywood Plus MPEG decoder I found that mplayer pretty much ignored the discs region code. The downside though is that mplayer doesn't fully support DVD menus yet and as such, I had to specify the starting title, audio and subtitle tracks by hand which was a PITA, particularly on discs loaded with lots of extras (trying to find the movie on a disc with 26 seperate titles is not fun...). Subtitles are a bit flaky in mplayer as well as is audio/video synchronisation but I'm not sure if this was caused by me trying to pipe the video into the H+ or some fault in mplayer.

What versions of PHP,Perl,Apache Server for RH8 ?

When did Apache 2.0.45 come out? I only put 2.0.44 on less than a week ago and I double checked and could have sworn 2.0.45 wasn't there then...

    Redhat

Whens it due for official release, in about a week if not less? It'll pop up on mirrors all over the world then without threat of legal action from Red Hat so your best bet would probably be to wait at least until then.

Anyone try to boot the XBOX with Linux yet?

I'd love to try this, I need a new file/web/email/FTP server and even if you factor in the cost of a mod chip and larger hard drive, the Xbox works out cheaper for its hardware complement than a full PC. The trouble is that so far, only Mandrake and Debian are being offered as distribution choices and I'd rather put Slackware on.

EPoX 8RDA+, Red Hat Linux 8.0 (Psyche), and nVidia PR

I'm not quite sure I understand the problem here... These are the latest nForce2 drivers nVidia have listed on their site: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_nforce_1.0-0248 Have you tried installing them? If they didn't work, what kind of error messages are returned?

    For once I love nvidia!

I stopped having problems with the nVidia Linux drivers when I gave up trying to install the RPMs and just downloaded the source tarballs. I just hope the nForce drivers are as easy to install...

    Format partition with mandrake

punkisdeads solution is probably easier... The Red Hat installer will replace the bootloader and it's partitioning tools will reformat the partition. PQMagic costs money, involves multiple reboots and versions prior to and including 7 (I'm not sure about 8) will choke on the newer Linux journaling filesystems.

    DVD for Red Hat 8.0?

Even though this doesn't strictly concern Red Hat it is related to DVD playback: I'm trying to use MPlayer to play DVDs because it's one of two programs that are known to work with the dxr3/em8300 drivers (and therefore my Hollywood Plus) and the other (Xine) sucks ass. With lots of fiddling (mplayer is primarily a command-line driven program and with no stable support for navigation of DVD menus, trying to find the film on a disc crammed full of useless fluff takes a lot of stabbing in the dark) I've managed to get it to play DVDs but I'm having a problem with subtitles. The main problem is that several subs, particularly shorter ones, aren't staying on screen long enough to be read. Another problem is that when two subs are being displayed at once mplayer has a habit of blanking both which is a huge disruption when you're trying to read them. Is there any way to correct this without having to rip the subs from the DVD?

RedHat 7.2 and Asus A7N8X Deluxe

You mention you're using the RPMs, have you tried compiling the source tarballs instead? There might be some wierd voodoo going on between RH7.2s default 2.4.7-10 (thats a beta kernel, right?) and the precompiled drivers. I also noticed that nVidia only have RPMs for Red Hat 7.3 and 8.0. I know from experience that installing RPMs meant for different versions of Red Hat is a mine field, even when theres only one minor versions difference between them, and I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Audigy 2 Platnium in MDK 9.0

Just how different is the Audigy2 from the Audigy1 in terms of basic functionality? I know the A2 has the extra stuff like DVD-Audio and THX but if it's similar to the A1 in terms of basic sound reproduction then you might be able to get away with just loading the emu10k1 SBLive/Audigy1's. I'm not familiar with the ALSA sound drivers that Mandrake uses but if you can manually select your sound card in ML type try selecting an Audigy1 model and see what happens, it shouldn't do any harm. If it doesn't then you may be out of luck, at least for the time being, as I just had a quick look at the ALSA site and they don't mention the A2.
  14. I don't know about Mandrake but I recall that the some versions of Red Hat allow you to load drivers off a floppy for inclusion into the installation kernel but unfortunately, not only do I not know if Mandrake offers a similar feature, I also have no clue as to just how you go about creating such a disk if it does. I'll see what I can find out but in the meantime perhaps someone whose more familiar with installing Linux onto a hardware RAID array can step in and lend a hand.
  15. ...and thats that one of the libraries I need, libgnome2, refuses to compile properly. After chasing down all it's dependencies (none of which are mentioned in the "suggested compilation order" on the GNOME site...) the configure script completes successfully (apart from a message informing me that I'm using a development version of gnome-libs but I'm not sure if thats causing the issue or not since the 1.0 version it suggests, I'm using v1.4.2 currently, won't configure properly) but when I go to 'make' it spits out several messages like this: Code: /usr/local/include/glib-2.0/gobject/gvalue.h:22: #error "Only <glib-object.h> can be included directly."In file included from /usr/local/include/glib-2.0/gobject/gsignal.h:28, from /usr/local/include/glib-2.0/gobject/gobject.h:30, from ../libgnome/gnome-program.h:39, from ../libgnome/libgnome.h:29, from libgnometypebuiltins.h:7, from libgnometypebuiltins.c:5:/usr/local/include/glib-2.0/gobject/gparam.h:22: #error "Only <glib-object.h> can be included directly." and then terminates. Any ideas why? I'm using Slackware 8.1 and am compiling the packages in the order suggested here and compiling any dependent packages as they come up, using the latest versions where possible (which hasn't been possible in a couple of cases and I can't say I'm happy about that...). Have I missed something not mentioned in the configure script or is there something else wrong?

I'm having a bit of a problem with GNOME...

And a big ;( I've found the source of the trouble... I think: FreeType 1.3.1. It seems having this on my system is causing problems with the detection of FreeType 2.1.3 which in turn was casuing the problems with pango and fcpackage. I'm really growing to hate this business of having to compile and maintain two versions of the same library...

I'm having a bit of a problem with GNOME...

Grrr... n/m, I've figured it out... I think. It turns out that I was infact using the wrong version of libgnome2, the correct versions of both libgnome2 and libgnomeui2 are found in the libgnome and libgnomeui directories of the GNOME FTP sites under the 2.x subfolders instead of the libgnome2 and libgnomeui2 folders ;( Anyway, now I have a different problem: I'm now trying to compile libgnomecanvas (is there anywhere on the net that details exactly how many dependancies each of these packages has and in what order to compile them? This is starting to get extremely frustrating...) and its complaining that it can't find pangoft2. Now, I can't compile pangoft2 because it refuses to acknowledge the version of the Xft library compiled with XFree86 4.2.1 and FreeType 2.1.3 and the versions at http://www.fontconfig.org which it will recognise won't compile on my system (and using the .pc files from this results in errors from either the configure scripts or the compilation). The question is now: How can I compile Pango with FT2/Xft support in this situation? Is it possible?

    iptables GUI

Remote administration certainly is feasible, I use SSH for just that purpose however X forwarding might not be since I can't think of a way to get an X based program on there without a whole horde of dependency issues caused by not having X installed. RPM would throw a fit and compiling from source would fail since it would expect X libraries to be installed. I'll definitely be checking out the HTML adminitration though, that seems like a suitable solution to the problem.

    Accessing Linux partitions from Windows

I looked that up but I was kind of in the market for something a bit cheaper like say, free. Seeing as the ext2/3 code is only a simple trip to kernel.org away I fail to see how even read-only support can be so difficult to provide...
  20. What bootloader do you use? With LILO it's a simple matter of loading the file /etc/lilo.conf into a text editor and switching the positions of the Windows and Linux entries so that the one fro Windows comes before the one for Linux and then issuing the command lilo at a terminal to commit the change to the MBR. If you use GRUB then the procedure is a little different but unfortunately I can't help since I haven't invested the time into learning how it works.

    iptables GUI

Anyone know of any similar programs that are not dependent on having X installed (perhaps using ncurses to generate a text based UI like the kernel menuconfig program)? The reason I ask is that I've been meaning to put up a firewall on my gateway/server box for ages but since I don't know the first thing about iptables beyond simple port forwarding and masquerading I keep putting it off. I've tried a couple of premade firewall scripts but all I succeeded in doing was killing net access to the whole network (including the machine they were installed on). (Oh, and before you ask, the reason it doesn't have X installed is mainly because it only has a monochrome monitor and graphics card. While X can be made to work in such an environment applications are optimised for resolutions much greater than 720x400 and 1 bit colour)

    AWE64 PnP ISA Soundcard

I used to own one of those... Unfortunately, all I remember is that you need to do some wierd voodoo with isapnptools but I can't really remember the specifics. I remember needing to run pnpdump and redirecting it into a file and then going through it, uncommenting AWE related stuff but thats about it. Bear in mind though, this was with Red Hat 5.2 and kernel 2.0.36, it may be (and probably is) completely different now.

sb live! and linux it don't work

modprobe emu10k1 Thats all you should need to do to get the SBLive! (at least the wave audio functions) working under Slackware 8.1 w/ kernel 2.4.18. I know it works because I'm using that exact distro right now and thats all I've ever had to do to get my SBLive working. If you want to make it work at startup edit rc.modules in /etc/rc.d and remove the comment ('#' mark) from the modprobe emu10k1 line in that file.

Lindows 3.0 Anyone running it on their system?

Lindows is crap. Any distribution that encourages general use of the root account sucks by default.

    OpenGL on mandrake9

I'd say at a rough guess you've downloaded the wrong file for your distribution/kernel configuration. Are you sure you've downloaded the RPM for Mandrake 9 Uniprocessor architecture? http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.mdk90up.i586.rpm From the looks of the error, it seems you've downloaded the 8.1 RPM by mistake...
