The first time I tried Phoenix (v0.3 on Win32) I was far from impressed. It was just as slow as regular Moz and only a few megs smaller (7Mb as opposed to 10 for the regular Moz). I ran 0.5 on Linux for a short while last night and I was completely taken by surprise. At more than twice the size of Opera it's still too big but at least the speeds been improved. I wonder if the Win32 version has seen a similar performance boost...

How to completely remove Internet Explorer 6 from XP system?
Admiral LSD replied to gisot's topic in Everything New Technology
98Lite allows you remove IE from 9x systems and the developer has a version for XP in the works which promises the same functionality. Despite the fact that I despise IE as a broswer I've resisted uninstalling it all these years because I appreciated the fact that it made the downright ugly Windows 95 GUI somewhat bearable. -
Have you tried the text mode installer at all?

Quote: 1. You need Win2k Server to actually do the "bandwidth shaping". OUCH! You're looking down the barrel of a couple of thousand US for that right away... Is there a cheaper option? Linux perhaps?

Why can't I use X with 32MB of Ram?!?!?!
Admiral LSD replied to repoman1879's topic in Everything Linux
I can't see why the issue exists in the first place tbph... 6Mb of RAM will get you 1024x768 @ 24 bit colour easily (you only need 4Mb for that really) so why is X complaining? -
Aren't all USB modems host based (ie WinModems)? In that case, you'll be hard pressed to find one that works with Linux but I could be wrong...

You'll want the files from here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123 but make sure you get the appropriate files for your kernel/distribution. If one doesn't exist, grab either the Source RPM (.srpm) or tarball (.tar.gz).

OF used to work perfectly fine for me under XP. The last two patches really screwed me over though. 1.1.1.9 replaced my OF with some multiplayer only BS and 1.1.1.0 killed my HL completely.

Change default places in 'Open' dialog box
Admiral LSD replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Xteq X-Setup comes with a program that lets you change these but I can't remember if it did so as a non-Admin user... Theres also another caveat: As you've noticed, by default the entries in the Reg key are blank. This sets up the default locations. Modifying even one of those will remove the other four which, depending on whether you use the other four or not, may be a problem. I'm interested in changing these myself, which is how I came across the X-Setup plugin, but since I like having a few of the default locations on there (My Computer and My Network Places in particular), I passed it over. If anyone knows of a program that allows you to edit these while preserving the default ones I'd love to hear about it. -
In the System Properties (Acessed through either right-clicking My Computer and selecting properties, through the Control Panel or by pressing Win+Pause/Break) under Computer Name I would imagine.

Not unless you want to end up like the goatse man... Thats the overall effect of paying Intels ridiculous prices.

Share a net connection on a Windows PC to RH 8

Quote: The only reason I am doing it this way is because my modem in a winmodem and won't work in linux. I'm just to cheap to buy a linux compatible modem...How doesn't want to save a couple of $$. What sort of chipset is on your Winmodem? Linux drivers for several Winmodem chipsets are available: http://www.linmodems.org/ -
The onboard 845G video sucks so much it makes a black hole look tame in comparison. If you really want onboard video, the only option is nForce. It still won't perform as well as any dedicated solution but it knocks spots off every other integrated solution out there. Of course, thats hardly surprising when you consider video cards are nVidias staple business

Windows XP Pro vs Windows 2000 Pro
Admiral LSD replied to gilgamesh's topic in Everything New Technology
Getting rid of 2000 Pro (and replacing it with XP Pro) was the best thing I ever did to my PC. Hell will freeze over before I install 2000 Pro on any of my PCs again. -
Could be that somehow Windows has reverted to using the old 16 colour icons. I can't remember exactly where but somewhere in the display properties (Under the 'Effects' tab, I think) is an option to show icons using all possible colours. Check to see if it's enabled and reenable it if necessary.
-
As the title suggests, I've noticed that icons have started disappearing (and sometimes not appearing entirely) from my System Tray. If you load the Task Manager processes exist for all of them just their icons aren't showing. Now I know that XP tucks inactive icons away after a while (and when you have 16 icons in there you leanr to appreciate that) but even after you expand the tray they're still not there. Anyone else noticed this problem and is it specific to SP1?

Quote: Another cool (pun intended) feature of the P4 is if it overheats, it will slow down, for self-preservation... There's a video on Tom's Hardware of a P4 running the Quake 3 timedemo looped, and the heatsink/fan is removed. Nearly instantly, the FPS drops sharply, but upon reattaching the heatsink/fan, the game speeds back up. Just an extra bit of insurance, I suppose. At the time when I was deciding what platform to build as my next PC, the Athlon/AthlonXP didn't have such a feature. Now, I am careful with case fans, etc., but I never shut my machine off, so there is the increased risk of a fan dying when I am not nearby to catch it. That video is little more than an Intel funded publicity stunt, I'm sure of it. Sure, the P4 might be able to operate without a HSF but how often in the real world does a heatsink just fall off a chip? A much more likely failure is a siezed fan caused by either the accumulation of dust or more likely cheap sleeve bearings used in place of the more reliable, and expensive, ball bearings. Unfortunately, you're not likely to see such impressive pyrotechnics (nor such an impressive demonstration of the Pentium 4s thermal throttling...) in such a situation.

Look for a program called Resource Hacker and use that to edit explorer.exe. I can't give you exact details since the page I got my info from has since been taken down.

Opera has a built in email client. It's a bit awkward to use if you disable the hotlist (which I do since, even at 1024x768, it uses more screen space than I'm willing to give away) and its nothing special but it should be all you really need.

That new GUI looks particularly interesting. Any idea when it'll be pushed into general beta release, I want to get a closer look at it?

XP. I ran both for about the same length of time (a year or so) and XP is definitely the better bet. The thing that clinches it for me is the fact that more older stuff (at least from my personal collection) works out of the box.

I just downloaded the Release Candidate version (build 2926) through the auto update thingy and it appears to have fixed the DivX issues. I've only done one test so far (the same file I used last time) and not only can I seek without it reverting to the beginning the length is correctly displayed.

As it happens, Roger Moore was one of Ian Flemings original choices to play James Bond (along with David Niven, Cary Grant and a fourth who I can't remember). He was only rejected because when Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were casting for Dr. No they decided he was too young for the part.
