Does anyone know of a program that can output a list of currently active drivers etc? I'm having this problem whereby Final Fantasy VII (yes I know I said I gave up but I hate leaving problems unresolved) won't execute at all. On a hunch I booted up in safe mode and it worked fine so I'm looking for a way to see what drivers are loaded to see which one needs to die.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle.asp Win9x is going to die sooner than most people think. Good riddance to bad rubbish is all I can say.

Quote: Then they added that it was microsoft's responsibility to provide compatibility, which i agree with, but microsoft doesn't give a rat's butt that we can't play ff7. The moral of this story: we are screwed. Well, to be fair to M$ (something I rarely do) I have to say that they've done their bit: http://www.vianet.net.au/~weber/ff7.jpg (image is too big to post) and to a certain extent those fixes work, there is a note in the compatibility lists that some guy was able to play the game the whole way through. To be perfectly honest I've given up, it stopping completely was the last straw (I think it has something to do with installing Connectix Virtual PC but I'm not sure), the only way I'm going to get it working again is to reformat and reinstall and I'm not prepared to waste 3 days doing that so I uninstalled it, I'm going to get the PlayStation version and play it on my PS2, I don't have time for this crap.

OK, this is weird, my FF7 has stopped working completely. No matter how many times I click the icon or even the executable it just stops dead. It doesn't even give me the message that none of the CDs are in the drive. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it multiple times. Does anyone have an idea as to what might me going on?

You could try grabbing the 1080 opengl32.dll file and using it to replace the 12.90 one but I'm not sure if it would work.

NEED HELP: Protected mode driver is not responding to EMS fu

Is VPC faster than VMWare? If it is I might give it a shot, I have a few games that XPs DOS emulation won't play properly... -

WinXPs support of DOS games is, well, patchy at best. What game are you trying to run? -
http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17866 We're all having this problem, I hope a solution can be found soon too.

Homeworld doesn't really count since its more an RTS than a Space Sim but since you said "space game" I'm not going to continue being pedantic. My opinion on this though is that if you've never played Descent/Conflict: FreeSpace The Great War or FreeSpace 2 then you've never played a space game

I originally saw this over at Volitions board and it might be able to help: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016823/joytokey/english.html Its called Joy2Key and its rumored to do what you require but I'm told that the documentation is in Japanese so you may or may not be able to actually get it to do something.

Oops, wrong thread. On second thought I might be able to help you too. On your XP CD in the SUPPORT\TOOLS folder is a file called ACT20.EXE. It will install the XP Application Compatibility Toolkit. One of the tools it installs is the Compatibility Administration Tool. Once the tools are installed, launch it and scroll down to the entry for Need for Speed: Porshe Unleashed, click it and in the left hand pane right-click "PORSCHE.ICD" and select "Disable Entry" and then try running it.

I played a demo of Baldurs Gate and I thought it sucked... Is BG2 any better?

What game are you trying to play and what protocol is it using (IPX or TCP/IP)?

Quote: If its Wolfenstien 3d (the game) you're talking about, the NT kernel in Windows NT 4 and windows 2000 generally DOES NOT SUPPORT DOS-BASED GAMES or sound in them! Windows XP does, however! Also, you may try NTVDM (sound emulation for win NT/2k), but i couldn't get it to work for the game either. Sound for wolfenstein 3D works GREAT under windows XP! :-) They were talking about the Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer test Since RTCW is based on the Quake3 engine its supported under NT4 graphics wise due to NTs OpenGL support but the lack of proper DirectSound drivers means that sound is a different story. Also, XPs DOS emulation isn't perfect, while I was able to get Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad working with full sound, Shadow Warrior (which is based on the same engine Duke3D is) ran with choppy sound and Skyroads ran with no music (although sound effects worked fine).

These fixes have been up on Windows Update since Thursday, get them there if your afraid of getting leaked beta stuff.

Quote: Xp Is crap.muns no games and wont even use standby.I HATE *Microsoft* Tried running too many old DOS games have we? I'm running XP now and it runs every Windows game I've thrown at it. DOS games are a different story with the only two that I've tried that ran flawlessly being Rise of the Triad and Duke Nukem 3D (unless you count the lack of networking a flaw) and even then that was a surprise. IMO XP is much better than 2k but both are infinitely better than any of the 9x OS' (even 98SE).

You shouldn't need QFixapp if you run the game under XP since most of the compatibility features FF7 requires are built into the OS (Check in the Compatibility Administration Tool if you don't believe me). Does your friend have an nVidia based video card? I'm beginning to think thats where my problem is since the guy who said he got it running 100% said he had a Voodoo3...

I'm running XP right now and loving every minute of it. My original reasons for upgrading were so I could run Final Fantasy VII without having to have a Win9x partition and therefore ridding my system completely of Win9x forever. While that hasn't exactly come to fruition completely (FFVII crashes at the subgames now instead of the battles, I'm thinking it has something to do with my nVidia video card...) I now have so many other reasons for keeping XP that I just can't get rid of it. 2k required lots of fiddling around to get certain games working to to sloppy coding on the developers behalf. Under XP most of them installed ran effortlessly although a couple still needed special arrangements. XP also appears to cure that stupid "assign every PCI device the same IRQ" problem that 2k had which means my SBLive! doesn't cause a bluescreen when starting a game that uses EAX. The new Luna shell is pretty cool too, it makes a nice change from that boring old explorer shell. Despite the disappointment of having FFVII screw up on me overall I'm still impressed by XP and it will be staying on my box for a while.

I was able to get one of my all time favourite games, Skyroads, from that site. Thanks for the link, retro gaming 0wnz me so I might browse that site a bit more and download some other games that look interesting.

Nope NT4 can only accept DirectX 3a, nothing higher. The DirectX 6 you refer to is DirectX Media 6 which has something to do with Windows Media Encoder: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
-
Providing the V3 supports OpenGL under NT (NT doesn't support Direct3D anyway) the test should run, graphics-wise at least. Since NT4 doesn't support DirectSound you'll have the same problem that this guy is having: http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17803
-
There maybe a switch on console variable somewhere that makes it use the Wave device instead of the DirectSound one but while that *will* get the sound working if it's anything like my experience with Q2 then the sound will more than likely lag the graphics which is annoying.
-
It depends on what exactly you mean by "not working." Can you install it? Or does it install but screws up when you go to play it?

Try disabling any software running in the systray that pertains to the keyboard or mouse. I have Duke Nukem 3D and apart from being unable to use any res above 320x240 (which makes reading those hints they pop into really dark areas of maps extremely difficult to read) it works fine.
