sry no idea..seems unique to your setup. to find out what was supported in the previous sp2/sp1 database go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/appcompat/default.asp A rough glance seems to indicate there were a few additions in SP3 --electronic art's 3dsetup, exchange server and windows own explorer --may be more! Not found anything missing just from randomly checking the odd title.

argh..all this time hoping. for naught. ARGH!! the next question is...can we just use the qappfix program in XP and make our own custom fixes?

i'm a bit worried after some investigation. I don't think app compatibility has changed much at all. I still have only the 130 fixes available (vs the 199 or so in XP) and on the MS web site, we are told that sp3 fixes the following compatibility issues: List of Application Compatibility Fixes in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3 List of Application Compatibility Fixes in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3 DOS Command Line Is Missing the First Character (Q257404) MS-DOS programs that use command-line arguments may work improperly and may indicate that they are receiving a command line that is missing the first character. there are still only 130 fixes. I installed win2kpro' SP3. I then installed the comp app 2.5 program. I have new stuff like a compatibility administrator...but i still have only 130 fixes listed in qappfix. WHY?
-
just to say...i downloaded and installed the comapp 2.5 program with no problems. (Yes, i installed SP3). Do i understand it? That's a different question

http://www.theregus.com/content/4/25808.html Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 is out, available now to the company's major customers, and to everybody else from Thursday. It currently being Wednesday, and Microsoft's record on dispensing service packs in an orderly and controlled manner being what it is, you will be entirely unsurprised that you can currently download it anyway, here. INDEED FINALLY!!! its time to CELEBRATE!!! W00T!! (i hope) YEAH BABY, its finally here = )

.net? SO support the MS conspiracy then. They will have ya renting software forever in no time.

stick it in your other cd-rom --the one closest to C: I find some games require you to use your first listed cd-rom/dvd rom whatever. (the error message u listed is one that points to this kind of error)

works for me no problem (win2kpro -sp2) so what graphics card do you have (i assume you already have latest drivers)? what mouse (and driver ver.)?

1) WHen i bought system..dealer applied SP2 for me. I Then downloaded it from MS site to put it on CD for whenever i would need to re-apply it again. A while ago i had to replace the HDD. Got some crash problems. So i ran SFC and almost every file it was telling me to replace. Now here is my problem (question) --when SFC prompts for me to put in my SP2 disk to write a file, it will not accept the cd i made. So HOW do i get around this problem? It took me ages to fight my way out of SFC cause it kept looping and i could not cancel. 2) Here is a small but annoying problem to do with the start menu. If i drag a folder into another folder on the start menu it should move folder's contents and itself into the other folder. BUT only some folder items get moved..the rest are lost. I have tried doing this under the advanced options and in the start folder itself. The result is the same..lacking. So how do you move a folder and ALL of its contents into another folder or one that you create?

you might want to make sure your MB is ACPI compliant. Usually, if XP does not enable ACPI..its for a good reason. MS says that altering the ACPI detection routine can lead to unexpected and destabilizing results. In fact, I tried to help a friend install XP on an Asus p3v4x motherboard and failed. But the relevant part here is that, after the several attempts..at odd times the machine would beep 3x fast and the power would fade out or completely fail. This could be during a format or at any odd time. SO i had him disable the power management and the problem has gone away. A temp fix to something XP did with ACPI i would guess. http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q216573

what about for non-nvidia cards?

from the release notes... "FM music it is recommended that a sound card with true hardware FM synthesis (i.e. Adlib compatibility) is used, such as a SB16, AWE32 etc. PCI cards like the SBLive do not have FM synthesiser hardware and in these cases Adlib emulation will be necessary, so a minimum PII 350 is recommended. " What a brilliant idea..all we have to do is put in our old isa sound cards --i still have my adlib card somewhere. and that trial last a generous 3 mins. per instance.

does that mean win2kpro is extremely stable and robust while delivering the apps?

Guys for a heavy gamer and Internet user which OS is better?
RedStar replied to pr-man's topic in Software
win2k and xp are very close kissing cousins. XP has a recent compat. update that win2k must wait for SP3 to get. Stability is the same..win2k comes with a duel processor option. If you want that in XP you have to get the professional edition. As far as speed goes check out this site... http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2001q4/os/index.x?pg=1 (info is a little old but still valid even at high res..there was less than a 1 fps difference in speed. and as they say..that is covered in the nargin for error. So i say winxp and win2k ==TIE! But XP will have the main support. So if you are only getting around to buying an O/S now --get XP. (that XP SP1 is close to release from what i have read). Me, I'm sticking with my win2k I would personally say win2k is better at gaming but that is only because the XP platform i play on..only has a P4 1.6 ghz and not a AMD thunderbird -
hey, someone says they can play need for speed: high stakes right outta the box on XP? I do not know if this was post XP compat update? Can you please tell me what settings were used? TIA

thanks for that part..

Im having some problems following the directions. like.. does the first step read: 1. Put the Win2k disk into the cd-rom. Open Windows Explorer while at the same time depressing the shift key (right or left?) for several minutes (how long exactly and why?). Make a folder called (Driver Letter -ie. C):\win2kcd. how do i add IE 6 to the image if i just upgraded it over the old ie5? "7. Download CDRWIN from www.goldenhawk.com " is there another pogram..this one is shareware that only allows 1x speed? TIA
-
i think we just have to wait patiently for SP3. *drums fingers*

thanks again..i am a bit blind as i do have an ignore load library but i DO NOT have missing exe. However the total fixes are 130 (to your 199) so i will check if there is an update i can get NOW . in the (qfixapp)log file the last few entries read... 11/23/2001 11:52:46 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryA Allow(user32.dll) 11/23/2001 11:52:46 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryA Allow(kernel32.dll) 11/23/2001 11:52:46 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryA Allow(D3DIM.DLL) 11/23/2001 11:52:46 CorrectFilePaths 1 - GetFileAttributesA corrected path: .\language.iff language.iff 11/23/2001 11:52:46 CorrectFilePaths 1 - CreateFileA corrected path: .\language.iff language.iff 11/23/2001 11:52:46 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryExW Allow(C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Mouse\MSH_ZWF.dll) 11/23/2001 11:52:46 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryW Allow(C:\WINNT\System32\DINPUT.dll) 11/23/2001 11:52:47 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryExW Allow(C:\WINNT\System32\dinput.dll) 11/23/2001 11:52:57 IgnoreLoadLibrary 3 - APIHook_LoadLibraryExW Allow(C:\games\Prophecy\prophecy.exe) 11/23/2001 11:54:17 EmulateDirectDrawSync 1 - [ReleaseMutex] DirectDraw synchronization error - correcting That last line may be pointing to the problem. WHat does your log say? Sorry if i'm boring y'all, i just find this stuff fascinating. oh..and if i may, what settings do you have for need for speed: high stakes. (been trying to get that one to run forever and the advice on this site has not worked for me in this regard.)

hi ya..i don't think i am understanding quite right. when i use qick fix...it had 53 and 57 fixes checked ...of those, the ones you mentioned were included (except i could find no entry for ignore load library). So i have tried this before and can only go so far. Did you mean i should only check the ones you mentioned and uncheck the rest? ALso, when i do use qfixapp..should i not have also used the win95 compatible option? I tried it both ways with no success. I can fly in the simulator with no problems... but in the game i crash out in the first mission or right at the next mission alert. Where i crash in the mission is not the same...at least it crashes back to the desktop and leaves a drwatson log entry.
