that number 2 problem is also in XP..you'd think that would only make the user angry at having upgraded for naught thanks for the info.. on 1!! I'm gonna do that as soon as sp3 comes out cause some people on this site now claim it will be released in just a few days.

what do you have for wingcommander prophecy!? waits in anticiption.. it is so close to running on win2kpro but i do not know what settings to use to make it run as it should. (thanks btw:

they are the same program its unfortunate that it has to run continually and can't just apply a one time fix like nvidia's.
-
EA is notorious for saying..we don't support games on win2k so go away. But if it runs on XP it should run on 2k...maybe you are missing a compatibility update. i refuse to believe there are games that will run on XP but not 2000. grr

that's an sp2 fix..you got SP2 installed?

there are two options..the default quick erase --which may not delete and the full erase which should,...but will take a heck of a long time. i don't use Nero tho so that may be different but as to it should format just like a floppy...that is way incorrect. To erase a cdrw..the laser has to heat up and actually change the state of the disk media. 500-600 degrees to write. I think less to erase. this may be slightly inaccurate as i am relying on my memory )

"You can just copy msconfig.exe from a Win98 or WinXP computer to your Win2K install. I never had problems when doing this. " how can you drag it over from win98 when the XP version has the ability to stop services (which you can do anyway)? Or do you just mean it will work as far as it goes?

most games tell you upfront (in the readme file that they may not work on duel displays. They go on to tell you how to make the game "work" by disabling one of the monitors while you play.

that was one of the advantages..NO defragging necessary! years later, it seems to need defragging more than win98. And those log files and user settings files never defrag (well, 'cause i guess they are unmovable system files). I'm not happy with the default defragger. But beggers can't be too choosy

why don't they RELEASE SP3!

Hi. I don't know when this started or why but my system crashes fairly frequently ... seemingly in a random fashion. The problem is there are NO error messages. Nothing is written to the event viewer logs. There is no memory dump file. There is nothing to track down. Symptoms: I will be doing something minor like clicking on a link in internet explorer..or even windows explorer. nothing happens so i click again..and again..then i know the error has occured 'cause i can move my mouse cursor but can no longer activate anything. I could move the mouse cursor around all day..but that is it. if i now click on a mouse button a few times..i will get the beep and the cursor freezes too. I press the reset button and windows boots up as if nothing has happened. No trace of the error anywhere. I have already updated my microsoft USB mouse driver and liveware. ??? please help and TIA!

my ram is running normal I am using the 4.37 VIA 4:1 drivers. I have not had a crash since 3 of those files were reverted. But its too soon to tell. As for my video drivers ...the ones i have, have given me a whopping 10% increase in performance. SO i have to think about reverting to an earlier version of the det drivers. From what i have read, i do not think that is my problem --esp as, for some odd reason, my computer never crashes while i'm playing intensive games like Wolfenstein, MoH, ghost recon and so on. However, i thank you very much for your input. Right now i am very interested in the problems that cropped up using SFC. Is there an updated version out there..perhaps?

i have run SFC and it wants my SP 2 disk. Well all i did there was download the SP 2 file and copy it onto a disk. But sfc refuses that one and prompts for the right disk. There does not seem to be a way to exit the darn program...it keeps looping. Is it safe just to end task??? ACK! i assume its the stisvc.exe process.. also, it wants to restore the files to the original condition. That's not right as some of them have been hotfixed. This version is way less user friendly than win98's version. now, how do i ABORT!?? whaa ok i finally managed to cancel 1/2 way thru. unfortunately WFP did revert at least 3 files back to their originals with messages like this: Windows File Protection scan found that the system file c:\winnt\system32\dxmasf.dll has a bad signature. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is 6.4.9.1109. Direct X 8.1 something is wrong since it wanted to change so many files ..either way. So any ideas?

no..keyboard is frozen. Its a win2000 compatible system. I should also mention that i had to get a new HDD not to long ago. The people just copied my stuff onto the new drive. So i am thinking maybe a few corrupt files got copied. But then again..these are random lockups. Just opening my mail browser a min ago cause a lock. Different this time because the computer froze while loading the program. And now, here i am typing away with no problems.

An article on this site said it was almost ready just before X-mas! But now i see nothing about it here or on the microsoft site.

Ok. i have an actual example of why i need sp3 now. all this time i have thought that one of my apps (access 97) was screwing up with win2k vs win98. SO i finally broke down and got office 2k. But my problem of not being able to cut and paste pics turns out to be a fault of 3 win2k system files (ole32.dll for one). So i click on the hotfix from the article only to be dumped at the main support page; and thus lost amongst the billions of options. I download the 3 updated system files but can't replace the old ones 'cause they are in use and under WFP. SO, it would be much easier just to have one nice place to fix all those billions of problems since sp2 (well 640+) in the form of SP 3. and..can some1 tell me please how i can update my windows protected system files? edit: well after an accident and remembering that one of the files referenced com + when i was trying to manually update them...i stumbled on to a com + hotfix that actually did what it said it would. So my problem is fixed post SP2 --but i have wasted months due to my ignorance. I would rather just have SP3!! ))

specifically...trying to import pictures does not work as it did under w98. I can copy/paste a pi into an ole form field..put once the box loses focus, the picture disappears. If i copy a picture directly into the table and then convert it into a device independent picture, it is saved. However, the picture will not display. If i click on an ole field, with a picture i have saved under win2k, the bkground image of the form flickers. This is the only way i know that there is anything in the field at all. SO, without having to buy access 20000, how do i solve this very annoying incompatibility between access 97 (updated to most recent) and win2k pro (sp 2)? (No one has answered me in the access forums nor can i find any relevant info at the MS knowledge base.) TIA

..they have had plenty of time. What am i missing about what seems like an easy problem to fix?
-
not one i actually thought about. I was just hoping sp3 would usher in a new age of computing like sp2 did. more compatibility and stability...plus a whole lot of magic! i just want sp3! ) edit: Also, i actually enquired about it because of a comment not too long before christmas...where someone said isn't it wonderful MS was going to release a SP for win2k even though XP was now their dominant concern. So i have become kinda worried that MS might be letting win2k slide afterall.

i was just checking them out yesterday..didn't book mark the page.

hi This game installs fine on win2kpro (sp2). the simulator inside the game actually works no problem. I have even played the first mission. But..then it crashes. I don't know why it won't work but the practice simulator will. Has anyone got this game to run properly? if so, how??

so pressing alt-tab can cause instability. new games like max payne give you the option to turn alt-tab off or on --but recommend you leave it disabled. the recommendation is to quit the game and go to desk top. so if ytou are using icq to talk --don't )

its there also. there are also a few threads on it here. I have tried to get it to run...but have not managed to do it. But lots of people say they have followed advice and got it to run under win2kpro.
