I don't know if this is possible but thought I'd ask anyway. I need a program that will allow me to scan my old hand written documents into Windows, & then convert my writing into text. It would really save me weeks in re-writing (i.e., typing) these documents in MS Word. Thoughts or ideas anyone?

Many of us already know the new 3.06GHz & higher P4's will have hyper threading enabled, similar to their Xeon brothren. But, from reading some of the columns over at HardwareCentral, it looks like HT may mean switching to WinXP. That sux Here's a snippet below; Conventional wisdom would suggest that, due to their inherent multiprocessor support, Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 would be the optimal OS choices for a Hyper-Threading desktop (Win NT is getting a bit long in the tooth). According to Intel, this is only half right -- while Win XP Pro is indeed on its list of recommended operating systems, Win 2000 is not. Oddly, Intel goes so far as to recommend that Hyper-Threading be disabled for use with Windows 2000, NT, 98, 98SE, and Me. Odder still, Windows XP Home Edition is on the recommended list, Intel listing it alongside Win XP Pro as products that "include optimizations for HT Technology." We know that Windows XP Home does not officially support multiple processors, while Win 2000 does; this makes the Intel list look a tad backwards. Either Intel is working some marketing magic, or Microsoft can hit a switch (Windows Update, anyone?) and flip some hidden switch in Win XP Home. For the record, Intel says it's also "working with the Linux community" to get popular distributions up to speed, though only Windows-based PCs will get to wear the nifty Intel HT Technology sticker.

I'm trying to fix a WinXP pc that cannot open any secure web pages. When I attempt to do so, I get the "page not found" error. I was told that encryption/security has "failed" in IE6, & needs to be corrected. When I try to reinstall IE6 from Microsoft, I just get errors saying "installation could not complete. please close all programs & try again...bla bla". IE is currently identifying itself as; version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920 cipher strength 128 bit update Version SP1 Can anyone throw me a bone here?

IE6 security/encryption problem; Secure web pages no worky
Ron_Jeremy replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Software
For the hell of it, I tried try to install IE patches from Microsofts site. But, I am unable to because an error pops up saying "This update requires IE6 to be installed". Damn, this is so frustrating -
I thought about using this machine as a home router. There will be 3 pc's behind it; 2 surf the web quite frequently, & 1 will be a 24/7 Counter-Strike server. I thought about installing NT4 on it, but am tempted to use a Linux program found here that runs off the floppy drive & doesn't even need a hard disk. Will using this machine slow down or hinder my other pc's "performance" (i.e., up/download speeds) on the 'Net? Shall I use a beefier machine instead?

P133MHz & 128MB memory enough for a home router?
Ron_Jeremy replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Slack Space
Thx for the info people I had already used smoothwall & its counterpart ipcop as well, but on more powerful machines (PII type pc's). I was just worried that this P133 may be a little overloaded running either smoothie or ipcop. That's why I looked at the "router on a floppy" solution from BBIAgent. Has anyone had any experience with the BBIAgent router? I would like to know how it worked for you. -
CD-RW: Can browse folders, but not run any files
Ron_Jeremy posted a topic in Everything New Technology
I have some files burned onto a CD-RW that cannot be accessed. I can browse & open folders without problem, but opening/running files within the folders is another story. I used Nero to burn, & was told that the burn was completed successfully. I have mostly pictures (bmp's & jpg's), & some exe's (like winamp, video driver, etc). When I try to open some pictures, whether it may be a bmp or jpg, nothing happens. The exe's refuse to even run, giving me a "This is not a valid win32 application" error. Nero burned at the disc (Memorex Platinum CD-RW) maximukm rating of 4x. Can I "recover" any of these files, or is this particular disc toast? -

I'm trying to give phone support to a guy that has a Compaq Prosignia VS machine (series 3420). He has so far been unsuccessful in resurrecing this machine, which was disconnected from his network a long time ago (he tells me). Since the pc cannot boot into any kind of useable interface, & the former IT manager cannot be reached, he has no clue as to what OS is even loaded on this thing. His superiors inform him that the machine contains data/programs that can be of use to the company. But, none of these people have a clue as to the machine's history. Anyway, he tells me that when the pc is booted, he sees a screen with this on it (I don't know how it's presented, since I've never been in front of this pc): Backup Exec v 7.01 Serial # xx-xxxx-xxx-xxxxxx Enter = session info ctrl+x = exit *There may be an option or 2 that I have forgotten, but nothing major I believe Going from memory of our conversation, I believe that if he tries either option he is presented with a screen to enter a username/password, of which he has neither (of course). I dunno, this is way over my head. I have never used or even heard of "Backup Exec". The only thing I know is that it may be a product of http://www.veritas.com/products/listing/ProductListingByFamily.jhtml?categoryId=120. All he wants is to get passed this & to the OS, what ever it may be. Thoughts/ideas are most appreciated, as always

.....on your motherboard?. Here's a video review.
-
Firstly, I tried searching these boards. Although I did find some info, none was helpful in solving this issue: I'm using a generic type USB keyboard & a Logitech USB mouse. Both work fine without any issues (so far). But, when I check the Event Viewer logs I always see this friggin error message: Event Type: Error Event Source: i8042prt Event Category: None Event ID: 26 Date: 9/24/2002 Time: 9:22:28 PM User: N/A Computer: TUSL2-C Description: Exceeded the allowable number of retries (configurable via the registry) on device . Data: 0000: 0f 12 08 00 01 00 62 00 ......b. 0008: 00 00 00 00 1a 00 05 c0 .......À 0010: ba 04 00 00 b5 00 00 c0 º...µ..À 0018: 07 00 00 00 08 00 0b 00 ........ 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ 0028: ed 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 í....... The error message is shows up dozens of times. If I swap in a PS/2 keyboard & leave in the USB mouse, no error is generated. Strangely, if I leave in the USB keyboard & instead swap in a PS/2 mouse, the errors continue. The motherboard is a ASUS TUSL2-C (Intel i815 chipset) with Intel inf update & Intel Application Accelerator installed (these were installed as possible remedies). I noticed during the boot process the IRQ 12 doesn't list with any of the devices. Could this be some where else to troubleshoot? If so, how? My motherboard doesn't allow me to disable the PS/2 port (my reasoning for this is to possibly free up another irq). I have spent over an hour searching google (with i8042prt as criteria), but have yet to come up with a solution. Any takers on this one?

.Net Server: Do your CDROM's show in Disk Management?
Ron_Jeremy replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Software
Damn, this sure is strange. My CDROMs used to show in Disk Management, & were drive letters Y & Z respsectively. The problem actually began today, after I was fooling around with Microsoft's Ram Drive utility. By default Ram Drive takes drive letter Z. Thus, 1 of my CDROMs was reassigned letter D instead. That's when I noticed both optical drives disappeared from Disk Management & the utility now began taking forever to start when ever I try to access it. I killed & uninstalled the Ram Drive (deleted its folder too), but the problem persists. Damn, I'm way too x) to begin another fresh installation. Somebody please throw me a bone here..... -
Quote: Ron, the only possible improvement in your combo, which I have used, is using the RazorLame frontend... Same 3.92 codec, and it does add a step, as you no longer encode from with exact audio copy, but easy GUI based frontend.. Offers resampling to 48KHz, 320kbps, etc. I remember downloading the RazorLame frontend program a long time ago (when I discovered EAC in it's very early betas). I never installed/tried it though. Hmmm, maybe I'll give it a go

Exact Audio Copy http://www.exactaudiocopy.de paired with LAME 3.92 encoder http://www.mpex.net/software/download/lamedll.html. It is the best.

this one goes out to all of you running .NET server
Ron_Jeremy replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Software
Four & Twenty, are there any "issues" with WM9, since it's still beta stage? -
I could really use some help. Anyone with experience using this product please feel free to add your thoughts. I want to set up a ramdisk to hold temp Internet files & the like. I thought I was doing everything right, yet when I try to access my newly created 64MB ramdisk (R:\), I get an error telling me "R:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function". No errors are present when I create the ramdrive, & it even shows up in Windows explorer too. But, Win Explorer dosn't show it's size (or any other properties), hence obviously I have a config error somewhere. I have posted a screen shot showing my RamdiskNT configs here, & a link to RAMDiskNT can be found here. Thoughts anyone?

Need help with RAMDiskNT (from Cenatek) problem
Ron_Jeremy replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Software
No, I didn't change any settings. I have no clue as to why it started working, because I had tried repeatedly without success to setup up the program. Anyway, since I could access the drive like I did any other drive, I successfully set my Temp Internet files to go into my ram drive. Now, I can't access the drive anymore, even though I didn't mess with any settings. Argh........this is frustrating ;( -

Need help with RAMDiskNT (from Cenatek) problem
Ron_Jeremy replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Software
Well, for some strange reason RamDiskNT decided to start working! -
A local store is tempting me with some dirt cheap ($40) Gigabit Nics. I was thinking 'bout picking up a pair & using a cross-over cable to connect them , since GigaE switches are still a little pricey for me. I was led to believe that GigaE networks will not run thru cross over cable. Thoughts?
-
What options do you see when you right click the drive (not the partition)?
-
Quote: I was under the impression that gigabit ethernet nics atomatically pick up a direct connection and a crossover cable is not neccisary. This does make sense because the gigabit does use all 8 wires unlike 100Mbit. Hmmm, that would be great since I do have (regular straight-thru) CAT5e cable to spare. Can anyone confirm this?

XP prompts me to re-enter my password if my computer is inactive for a short while. Normally, this is fine & dandy. But, it is a pain in the @ss while I'm watching a DVD ;( I forget how to disable this, or extend the time before the password prompt appears. Can someone please throw me a bone here? A big thanks in advance goes out to any help offered
