Is 1x512MB RAM "better" than 2x256MB

I am building my first AMD system & will be choosing a board outfitted with VIA's (I'm already in a panic) KT266a chipset. I was wondering if there's an advantage/disadvantage to using more or fewer RAM slots. What I mean is, would this board perform better using a single 512MB DIMM, or 2x256MB DIMM's? Or is this a dumb friggin' question? My apologies if it is I will be using Win2K/XP, 1600+ chip, & will not be doing any overclocking.
  4. Anyone seen this error before? I got this error with a timer ticking down (from 60 seconds I think) telling me Windows is gonna shut down & I better close all my stuff. Well I couldn't close anything 'cause Explorer.exe had already bit the bullet & only thing I could see was this stupid prompt. Here's my system stats: I have 2 1/2 year old 300w power supply ABIT BF6 + 850 Celeron/384MB TNT2/32 Adaptec 29160 SCSI card Disk 0: Quantum 10KII SCSI = very new [C:\; D:\; E:\;] (Win2K\Programs\etc) Disk 2: Quantum Atlas II SCSI = old drive [G:\] (Driver storage) Disk 1: Quantum Atlas I SCSI = 7 years old [F:\] (Swap File = 384MB) Maxtor ATA33 Primary master = 1 year old & hardly ever used Toshiba DVD Primary slave LG CDRW Secondary Master I had no problems with this set up, although I did install the Maxtor Primary master only yesterday (I double checked all jumpers). I formatted this disk within Win2K's disk management program & had no probs doing so. While surfing the Web I started hearing one of my drives continually spin up then spin down, & it wouldn't stop even if i closed all programs. I believe it was the Maxtor IDE disk because I could see the disk activity light was constantly on. Then I saw the "System is Shutting Down" error before the system shut itself down. Upon rebooting, I lost the Maxtor & Toshiba in the BIOS scan. If I unplugged the Maxtor the Toshiba would show in BIOS scan. Eventuall after a few reboots they are both showing. q3 fps

Nice #'s man. Well, I can't give you any Q3 stats (jeez, I didn't know peeps still played it ), but I do manage 55 fps playing Counter-Strike with my trusty old TNT2. I play at 1024x768 using the highest quality (not highest speed) settings

Added 2nd NIC, now 1st NIC gone!?

Hello. I was using a 3COM905B in my Win2K machine without problems. I added a 2nd NIC (3COM900B) & started my machine. Now I only see the newer NIC (as Local Area Connection 2) & my original NIC (formerly Local Area Connection 1) is gone (not showing in network properties). What happened?

Added 2nd NIC, now 1st NIC gone!?

Quote: In Win2K, you can change back and forth between ACPI support modes within the current installation. However, the success rate (from personal experience) has been really low. Actually, when I say "low", I really mean "zero". I would imagine that the problem centered around both NICs trying to use the same resources. Is this what happened? Well, usually I install as Standard PC & most (sometimes all depending on #) of my adapters get their very own IRQ. Sometimes I notice an IRQ may get shared by 2 adapters, but this doesn't happen too often. On this occasion, I reverted back to Standard PC from ACPI. Please keep in mind I had done this months ago & my machine has been rock stable. I forgot on rare occasion Windows tends to "lose" adapters upon initial installation when in non-ACPI mode (well, this happens on my setup(s) anyway). I have reverted from ACPI to Standard PC many times in the past & have never had any stability issues with either of my two current systems (ABIT BF6 & SUPERMICRO P6DGE). Admittedly, I have not tried going the Standard PC to ACPI route. Call it a "brain fart", but I gave the second 3COM the same settings as the first NIC. Even so, I was perplexed as to why it was not visible in Device Manager or in the Network Properties. Regardless, I tried hitting "Scan for hardware changes", & my first NIC showed up. It was displayed as "Device not configured properly" (NOT IRQ error related). I gave it the proper LAN settings (192.168.0.1) instead of the ISP settings & all was well.

Damn, I feel real silly. I totally forgot I have a non-ACPI machine (changed it to Standard PC a long time ago). Problem solved

    NT/Win2K Software RAID

How reliable is the software RAID available to NT & Win2K users? I'd like to stripe a few of my SCSI drives & put the swapfile & my programs on them. This is not a server, but a home pc that will get rebooted with some regularity (this is what concerns me). Am I asking for trouble?

    Pagefile Settings

I'd go with clutch on its size & with reversing_drive as to its location
  12. Messing around in the registry, I noticed the option to "ClearPageFileAtShutdown". It is set by default to "0" (no). What is the purpose of enabling this feature? Are there any performance advantages/disadvantages in doing do?
  13. Hi. Sorry for the newbie questions & please forgive my ignorance. I'd like to make a Win2K CD with integrated SP. I read the tutorials on this site but am unclear on 1 or 2 things. Firstly, I am asked to copy my Win2K CD to a folder on my hard disk. Is this meant to be an image (iso) of my Win2K CD, or do I merely "select all" from within WinExplorer & copy the folders/files to the folder? If it is the latter choice, will my newly created CD-R be bootable if I just copy the files back to it once I am done?

Can I delete the leave the Service Pack executable after it has patched/updated the files, or must I leave it with files?
  15. A workmate of mine has a Compaq Presario 5000. It came with Windows ME preinstalled & 2 Compaq "system restore" cd's. Anyway, I delparted the original partitions & installed Win2K on this machine but I don't know how to install the (built-in) audio. I searched Compaq's site but am unable to find a specific audio driver. I don't have the 2 Compaq "system restore" cd's handy, & I have yet to search their contents, but is this where the audio driver could be hiding? If so, will it be for Win2K, since the machine came with WinME preinstalled? I have no idea what kind of mobo is in this thing, but it does have built-in Intel 810 graphics, of which I got the latest driver off of Intels site. Now why couldn't the audio be that easy.... Any help to set up my sound will be most appreciated.
  16. Ron_Jeremy

Don't know hot to install built-in audio drivers, plz help!

OK, nevermind. I found the chip on the mobo (Allegro, just like you said) & downloaded the drivers. Thank you! Should've done that before I posted.....

Clearing page file at shutdown option

O.K you two, let it go. Besides, you're both talking over my head now anyway. Thanks for initial replies - they're most appreciated. If you're gonna continue the mud slinging, I'm gonna delete this thread.

    Simple upgrade turned nightmare

I recently upgraded my ABIT BF6 mobo from an older 433 Celeron to a newer retail/boxed 100MHz Celeron II 850. I thought it would be a simple swap but 3D apps in Win2k are telling me otherwise. I had never had a compatibility issue until now. The original Celeron was seated in a ABIT-Slotket. The new one is paired with a ASUS S370DL Slotket (Coppermine support). All Slotket jumpers are left to automatic (voltage default). There is no overclocking of any component going on. I used 6.5x66 for the original chip & 8.5x100 for this new one. The mobo handles all voltage & AGP/PCI divider parameters automatically. When I attempt to play Counter-Strike, the machine hangs consistantly. Sometimes I'm not even in a game server & it will hang if I click a menu icon. When it does hang, there is no BSOD. The game/screen just freezes & I can hear a continuous sound loop of the last (in game) sounds being played when the machine froze. I CANNOT ctrl-alt-del either. I am forced to hard reboot. To remedy, I reinstalled the game, even reinstalled Win2K again with all packs/patches/etc etc & already had the latest mobo BIOS before I bought the new chip. Nothing has helped. I suspected maybe an unhappy marriage between the ABIT mobo & ASUS Slotket, but this was dispelled since the old 433 chip runs fine in the ASUS Slotket too. I have tried drivers from the 6 series to the brand new Detonators for my TNT2 with no results. Reapplying SP2 between cpu swapping made no difference. So far my record for playing time before hanging is 22 minutes. I could normally play for hours on end without issue. Two things I've noticed: > SCSI/NIC/Sound/Video are all on IRQ 11 > The factory Intel heatsink/fan can be "wiggled" approx 2mm either way while mounted & strapped down onto cpu. The old 433 Celeron/Hsf doesn't do this. Any help or pointers will be most appreciated. This pc is used mainly for Counter-Strike & am finding this extremely frustrating. Thanks again!

    Simple upgrade turned nightmare

Quote: I'd scrape off the thermal pad on the Intel heatsink and use some thermal paste--don't use the Radio Shack stuff, it's terrible. Brian, I made some changes for some better reults, but don't know if one or all helped: > In the BIOS I set ACPI to disabled & I disabled another APM setting (forget which one) > In BIOS I set "Plug n Play OS" to NO > I switched the PC to "Standard PC" (Device Manager/Computer/ACPI). Upon reboot had to reinstall adapter drivers. Now just about everything has its own IRQ > I used some Arctic Silver compound, like you said I gamed for almost 90 minutes before the system froze, much better than before. What do you (or anyone else) think of being able to move (clockwise-counterclockwise) the heatsink/fan 2mm either way while its strapped onto the cou? It's a retail boxed cpu/hsf. I mentioned it in my original post & was wondering if this is normal?
  20. I'm getting an error each time I boot my PC. I'm pretty sure it's my fault, 'cuz I have a very bad habit of shutting down as many system Services as possible upon completeing a fresh install of Win2K (Adv Server). I figured that if it's just my stand-alone home pc, why run them all? I have tried restarting (& setting to automatic) many services, but this has not cleared the problem. Anyway, it goes like this: "A driver failed to load..bla..bla..See Event Log for details." So, I open up Event Viewer & am told this: "The Windows Installer service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified." When checking the Services applet, I notice "Windows Installer" is set to AUTOMATIC, but has not started. If I chose to start it, it does so without problems. Its executable path is stated as "C:\WINNT\system32\msiexec.exe /V". If I look inside the system32 folder, I can find msiexec.exe, therefore am puzzled why the Windows Installer Service cannot find it. Also, this particular service shows that it has NO depedencies. I did a bit of reading before posting this & found that the "Application Management" service is somehow related to the Windows Installer service. I checked its status & it is fine (STARTED > AUTOMATIC). Ideas anyone?

Why is my USB mouse working?!?!

I had Win98 on my machine for 2 weeks (only to play a game). When I was done with the game, I delparted/formatted the hard disk & reinstalled NT4 Work Station on it. Been using it for 2 days & just noticed that I was still using my USB mouse (Logitech optical 2 button+wheel)! And this is with NO Service Packs what so ever!!! I had totally forgotten that my mouse was plugged into the USB port until I opened my desk drawer to fish for a pen & low and behold my USB-to-PS/2 adapter was still in there. I even triple checked the mouse connector to the mobo, & yep it's in USB 1. I changed the BIOS setting "PnP OS" back n forth from yes to no, & my mouse still works! I have emailed Logitech to find out what's going on & to see if more of their mice are supported. No mouse software was installed (I obviously used it during setup). How is this so? I was always led to believe NT did not support USB.

weirdest video problem i've ever had

Quote: detonators dont support the riva128, right? I believe they do.
  24. Hi. I've been tryinng to figure out a problem with CS for over a week now & think I may have stumbled onto something. See, I've been playing CS since beta 5 on my NT4 machine, without ever having any problems of any kind. It always ran great & I was fortunate enough to not have any video/sound/network problems. I always started CS the following way: echo off start /high hl.exe -console -game cstrike -noipx -nojoy -numericping Well, without anticipating any problems in XP, I just naturally created the same batch file for my CS shortcut. After going into the game for the first time, all seemed well. I connected fine, & ghosted around the map without problem while waiting for the round to end. Once the round started, I bought my guns etc and left with the group. That's when problems arose....... Here's what happens: If Im not moving around in the game, the mouse works fine. But once I start moving around I would get horrible mouse lag and movement lag. I would press the "strafe left" button but nothing would happen for about 1 second. Same with mouse movement. I must have tried every Detonator, all sorts of mouse tweeking (Windows & in game), every D3D/OpenGl/Software mode resolution with no results. Man, I was stumped. While fishing around my Sierra folder, I executed the hl.exe file instead of my shortcut and problem solved!?! Hmmmmm, what's up with that? I edited my shortcut & removed "start high" & now she runs sweet. I haven't fooled around with the "compatibility mode" yet, but will keep you posted.
