    AT8 32X Mobo Question & VISTA

I have an ABIT AT8 32X mobo with a ULI m1575 and a Silicon Image 3132 SATA controller integrated onto the board. I am using VISTA, and Nvidia has not released a SATA driver for the ULI chip. Is anyone using the SI3132 SATA ports on any comparable board with good results under VISTA? I want the SATA II performance and I think the only way to do it is to use the SI3132 port. Thanks J
  2. Are there any issues or problems installing an ATI PCI-Express Video card into an NVIDIA Nforce 4 SLI Motherboard? Im not going to use the SLI part yet. I am upgrading a little at a time. I will eventually get 2 SLI NVIDIA cards, but until then I want to install my X700 Pro video card in the NVIDIA mobo. Will it work?
  3. Hey, I really appreciate the replies. Sorry I havent responded before now, We had to pack up to move into the new house. Thanks again. I guess I will continue with SP2 and try and disable some of the unecessary services.
  4. Im running xp. do i need sp2? if i visit windows update regularly and have downloaded all the updates for sp1 and i use a third party firewall, and antivirus do i really need sp2? my computer runs much better with sp1 but i will sacrifice a little for a more secure pc if sp2 is necessary... thanks in advance. jeff

    VIA Hyperion Drivers

I'm posting this here instead of the VIAARENA forums because you guys here are like family and I trust your input. I have upgraded to a k8t890 PCI-E mobo. The lates drivers from VIA are for AGP boards and the latest 4.56s were a minor fix for AGP systems. Does anyone know or has anyone heard when a new Hyperion will be available for PCI-Express specific systems? I feel that I'm running yesterdays drivers on tomorrows hardware and it concerns me. Jeff

    Dual Channel DDR or not

I just purchased a Soltek k8t890 mobo. It supports dual channel ddr memory. I purchased 2 identical 512mb sticks of pc3200 ram as well. Now, my dilema.... Am I gonna see better system performance splitting up the ram and running 512mb in dual channel mode, or going single channel mode and running 1gb of ram. I do alot of video editing and picture editing, some gaming. Thanks Jeff

    Athlon XP vs Athlon 64

Thanks for the links theefool, and thanks to everyone for replying so quickly. Those links are what I was looking for. Seems like the A64 and XP are fairly close on the benches. They look even closer when the XP 3200+ is almost free. I think I'm gonna go with the free XP proc and turns out the mobo is a dual channel DDR board. I do mostly video editing and the XP and A64 are pretty close on most of those benches, give or take 15 - 20 seconds or so to encode.

    Athlon XP vs Athlon 64

I consider myself a fairly educated computer "geek". But when it comes down to these new processor "speed designations" i'm lost. For example, the Athlon XP 3200+. The name implies its basically a 3.2 Ghz proc. But we all know its not, its AMD marketing gimick to make us believe their 2.2 Ghz chip runs so good, it should be. Therein lies my dilema. I have an oppurtunity to score a plain vanilla Athlon XP 3200+ processor and a VIA KT880 mobo for almost nothing. These fell into my lap almost for free. I was going to build an Athlon 64 3200 system. Now, considering the XP 3200+, according to AMD naming scheme, and the A64 3200 should be identical insofaras performance hence the 3200 designation. I have searched the net far and low for any benchmark comparisons on these two seemingly identically clocked chips, but so far nothing. Anyone know of a site that compares these two? Or anyone have any first hand experience? This should be a no brainer, spend almost nothing on an XP 3200+ or spend several hundred on an A64.... But I was going to spend the money anyway on the A64... Thanks, Jeff

    Windows XP 64

I have heard rumors that the 64 bit flavor of XP will be OEM only, meaning you wont be able to purchase just the OS. Anyone heard anything to the contrary? Jeff

    Monitor Goes White....

Thanks for the reply jaylittle. It was probably a combination of tightening the cable, reseting the BIOS and reinstalling the video drivers that did it. But I did them all kinda at the same time, so its hard to say which one did the trick. I guess I'm not a true troubleshooter or I would have done one at a time, but when it comes to my "baby", I was just in a hurry to get it better again. (plus I was becoming a bit anxious with regards to having to spend money on a new video card or mobo, flat panel monitor or something) so time was of the essence...(I usually cant go to sleep if my computer problems remain unsolved)... I'm just kooky that way I guess.... I dont have a networked drive containing the desktop wallpaper btw...but it was a good shot........ Thanks again, Jeff

    Monitor Goes White....

I reinstalled the video driver and it still does it. I reset the BIOS to defaults and it still does it. THEN......... (i feel so stupid!) checked the monitor connection.... It was loose. Pretty loose actually. I tightened it up and all seems fine now. Sorry for bothering you'all. That was the last place I would have looked. I pulled the tower out to pull the new 512mb of RAM, suspecting that was it, and I found the loose connection. Great advice though and I learned some new diagnostic avenues....thanks APK and dosfreak... Jeff

    Monitor Goes White....

Thanks for the quick response APK. I should have stated I was using XP. I tried taxing the video system by playing a game. I also ran the new 3dmark 05, i read that it really brings mid range hardware to its knees. My video card is a Radeon 9600 pro. no problems. It must be something related between my print driver and PSP 9. I can only reproduce this while printing in PSP 9. I can duplicate it everytime if I print a large photo, then while its printing, spool up another photo to print right behind it, then close out PSP 9 while its still printing the first photo. Its either RAM related or PSP 9 related. What do you think? Also, I'm afraid to admit it, I was toying around with some of the RAM latency settings just about the time all this started. I had a couple of failed bootups because of the incorrect settings so I set them back, I thought. Could an incorrect latency setting cause the white screen? I have since reset the BIOS to system defaults and I am going to try and reproduce the problem. I'm always trying to tweak my stuff to its fullest potential. Jeff

    Monitor Goes White....

I have been experiencing this problem lately with my flat panel monitor. I was working with Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 printing some large photos. When I closed out of PSP 9 and went back to the desktop the screen was white. Only the Wallpaper was white, not the task bar at the bottom. The computer did not freeze up and everything worked ok, just a white background. Very odd. I could even right click on the desktop and get to the control panel. Any suggestions? I just added another 512mb of system ram to my computer. Is this coincidental or not? Thanks in advanced Jeff

    What vid card is better?

I like the Radeon Series. I have the 9600 Pro. AWSOME card. I'm not sure what the specs are on the 9550 but the 9600 pro outperformed the mid range Nvidia cards. My 9600 Pro played Doom 3 and HL2 perfectly. May I suggest a 9600 Pro. You can find one for about the same price as the 9550 if you do some shopping. I dont know if the 9600 Pro comes in a 256mb flavor though. I have used both Nvidia and ATI, and the ATI cards typically produce better visual quality in general both 2d and 3d. Hope this helps.
  15. Man I feel your pain... If you use internet explorer and i.e. was hijacked, it will happen again. i.e. is prone to hijacking. Try using Firefox from www.mozilla.org There's nothing worse than reformatting and spending hours getting everything back to "normal" and then getting hijacked again. I speak from experience. This has happened to me twice. I will never use i.e. again. Heck, I read an article that M$ engineers used Firefox to show off the new MSN search engine. It was posted on the web, a picture of MSN search from M$ labs, running on Firefox!! Good luck.
