As Windows 95(A) and NT4 doesn't have an integrated Stack for USB communication and will never have. And even if some company creates drivers for USB communication under NT4 it doesn't mean that every USB device works. E.g. IOMEGA created a driver to access an USB ZIP-Drive under NT, but this only allows to access this device but no other. You will need also to have a driver for the specific opearating system from the hardware manufacturer of the specific peripheral. Even Windows 95B(with USB supp) and Windows 95 support USB but there are only a few drivers for peripherals available. The only devices that will always work without specific drivers are mice and keyboards if they have native support from the PCs BIOS, and this even works under plain DOS.

Well, I have the problem, that the driver for the HP Deskjet 720C that is shipped with Windows 2000 is crap and HP doesn't support this operating system. Any idead which alternate driver can be used or how I can get an existing driver to work ?

btw: i found a windows xp driver on www.windowsxp-drivers.com, a package that contains some dlls and macros but without any .inf. and also i found a driver from hp for the deskjet 830c that had a similar format but with included inf files, which i edited and changed the macro and dll names to match those from the xp drivers i found. it worked to install these, but in fact it seems to be quite the same as the built-in driver for the 720c in windows 2000.

Thanks for your many replies ! The printer uses only a parallel interface and doesn't have USB. It is now a bit more than three years old but still working quite perfect. I'm pretty satisfied with the output quality and the speed, especially with the color RET2 drivers that works under Windows 9x and NT4. The driver included in Win2k is quite poor in functionality and the printing quality especially for grayscale is worse than with the original drivers under 9x. As HP supports none of the printers older than 3 years (or even younger) with current drivers for 2k/XP I wanted to know if any other printer uses a similar command set. I don't think that the printers are in fact that different. So if any printer out of the HP's 800 series is similar, maybe this will work and enable the enhanced printing functions and not only the basics ?

after i upgraded from windows 98 to windows 2000 i have big performance problems when viewing movies. on w98 i could view an mpeg fullscreen without any problems and now it only works in 100% zoom without too many interruptions. well, my system is not the fastest (amd k6 at 333mhz, 160mb ram, matrox millenium ii pci and 2 fast scsi harddisks) but it worked before in a better way. i'm quite satisfied with the speed of 2k over all, but does anybody know what i can do to increase the video performance ?

i got a ssi (www.ssi.com.tw) usb to ide case that doesn't work at all as intended (Model is SI-378, http://www.ssi.com.tw/cgi-bin/pdmsch.cgi?id=8&pdid=221&action=showpd). I tried it under Windows 98/ME/2k with the drivers shipped with the device, drivers from the manufacurer's homepage as well as with the chipset manufacturer's (cypress/scanlogic) drivers (www.scanlogic.com). all that i tried only resulted in an unknown device in device manager or an non working device. i also tried with different harddisks inside. anyone experience how to get it to work ?
