Problems with a Realtek NIC (on MB) and 3com switch
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Networking
not sure i understand you. but i did try setting the speed settings manually in the properties dialog in xp -
yup, that it does. I was using the benchmark to put a number to it - it's just to point out that it is still working at the same speed. before, it seemed very sluggish - hence the 6000 benchmark, but now its above 10000 again and is working fine ! now to install simcity and exit real life again.... PS thanks for all the help guys

Problems with a Realtek NIC (on MB) and 3com switch
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Networking
yeah i thought of that, have tried a really short cable that came with the router, a longer one that I had lying around and a really long one that was hidden in a cupboard. no luck and those cables all work with other computers now you can see why this is really niggling... -
installed the 4-in-1's and they seem to have done bu**er all to be fair. 3dmark stands at 10866

Problems with a Realtek NIC (on MB) and 3com switch
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Networking
1) it did work correctly previously, but with an old 10Mb/s hub 2) as it didn't work I tried re-installing windows, but that didn't help 3) originally used drivers with WinXP, but then tried the drivers on the website 4) router/switch is brand new and works with a sony laptop and three other desktop computers, all with completely different configurations, so i am guessing its this card only thing I haven't tried is up[censored] the BIOS of the motherboard and I am usually slightly wary before doing things like that I think this is a hardware problem! PS Have ordered a nice new 3com NIC which should then make things work - i.e. I give up ! However would like to know what the problem is..... -
Hi all, Hooking up my various computers to a 3com Cable Router/Switch and all except one of them want to connect to the switch. My main one. Typical. Its currently using a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Driver and the switch is a 3com OfficeConnect Cable/DSL Gateway Problem: When it connects to the router, it keeps connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. Any ideas ? I had a stab at all the obvious solutions and fiddled with the network card settings and even downloaded a driver from the Abit website but to no avail.

Making Slipstreamed WinXP CD - A Few Queries
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Customization & Tweaking
right, this would after all be a PC i am messing with so there are bound to be problems: My newly burnt SP1 slipstreamed CD with RAID drivers is great. Boots, loads all the way up to where it "loads windows", i.e. the slightly higher res text bit where it asks what partition you want to put things on etc BUT it doesn't seem to want to know about my USB keyboard. This works on my original XP cd, but not on this new one. HELP ! -
Well, I had a few problems with slipstreaming but that's another story. I reinstalled WinXP, and then applied SP1 and then Detonator Drivers 40.72 and now my 3DMark is 11077 much better. I did also do a bit of BIOS tweaking. Two final questions: 1) Is it worth installing the VIA 4-in-1 's 2) Is it worth putting on different detonators ?

even further to this i have found how to include mass storage drivers on your CD http://www.spc.org.nc/it/TechHead/unattended_install_of_third_part.htm PS unattend.txt generated from setupmgr to be put in I386\ -
Making Slipstreamed WinXP CD - A Few Queries
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Customization & Tweaking
further to this i found that on the winxp cd there is a file called setupmgr which you can use to do a full automatic install and is really easy to use. -
Thanks for all the feedback guys. First step is to reinstall windows with a slipstreamed WinXP and SP1 install. Then I will see what I can do with the BIOS settings. There is a guide on the internet that I recently found that seemed to go through all the possible BIOS settings possible. Then I will install the latest drivers. Then I will put on 3DMark2001SE again, and see what she says. Watch this space ! PS My CPU isn't overheating but is pretty toasty - 61C - which I am not sure does it any good but I am putting in a cable modem before I start playing around with the insides of my computer again....
