That was idling in windows, it goes up to 63C (case temp 31C) when at 100% for over 10mins (i.e. stable) P

So you reckon Maxtor is the way forward ? I had to replace an ageing POS in one of my spare computers so I just rocked on down a shop and bought an IBM 180GXP and it seems (?!?) to be working...fairly f**ing quiet too. (However saying that I had a RAID setup with IBM 30gigs and one died during a heavy DTP session - less than impressed AND it took ages for the replacement to arrive - and guess what POS drive i had to replace in that spare computer - yup the replacement IBM !) Suppose the answer is boring really: BACK UP PS I ask as I think it's time to replace the single IBM (I keep my data on a WD) i run on my main computer so what's fast n quiet ? I was actually recommended the 180GXP and am kinda aiming that way....save me if I'm doing something stupid ! P

I am experiencing two rather annoying problems since installing Windows XP Service Pack 1: (i) My USB Intellimouse Explorer sometimes does not start when I boot up so I have to unplug the USB cable from my computer then plug it back in to get it working. (ii) My Dial Up (yes I still use 56k) Connection keeps dying after using it once and disconnecting, so I use it, then when i try to reconnect later after using my computer, it connects but doesn't actually seem to recieve any data. I have a feeling this is something to do with Zonealarm but I thought I'd mention it because I only noticed after installing SP1. Any ideas guys & gals ? Phil

Hi all, I have been using DVD Genie 3.33 to change the region setting on PowerDVD from Region 2 to Region 1 and back so I can watch my DVD's on my computer from both America and Europe. Is there another program or an update that'll work in XP with PowerDVD 3 to change Region settings or even a registry hack ?

Western Digital Hard Drive NOT Working in Win2k
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Hardware
I think it's the motherboard after a bit of careful experimentation. I would try your suggestion but instead I'll have to note it down as I have now returned to university so I only have my personal computer with me not all my other "spare" ones. Cheers anyways, probably raise this again at xmas. -
How do I back up my Worms World Party settings - I wanna keep my teams intact when I reinstall my computer...

Right here we go..... I have installed WinXP onto my computer and am happy with the setup as is. HOWEVER I want to play games and as my Voodoo5 is not happy under XP but most definately works in 2k I have decided to reinstall 2k. So I put in another Hard Drive to my already stuffed computer and have formatted it. Here is the problem: How do I install 2000 onto this drive without killing XP ? IS there a way and could you provide a step by step solution that I can follow so I don't kill everything ? Here is the setup: Promise Fast Trak 100 RAID Card running: 2 x IBM 30Gb GXP (One has XP on it and one is my music/docs disk) 1x WD 4.3Gb just for Win2k and a few games. Rest of system in signature...... Please could someone who has done this help me out. If it's not possible then I'll just Use File&Setting Transfer Wizard (SOOOOOOO useful ) and backup XP then reinstall it after i've done 2000. If this is the way to go then post and say. Cheers.

Cheers I will probably try that then but I am not sure that will work as when you put a windows 2000 CD into the drive it usually disables the install option....
-
what does everyone else use to watch DVD's then ?
-
Hehe, good workaround ! Don't fancy tryinf it but i'll keep it in mind.

Just cos I want to stick my oar in - I think that Easy CD Creator is the best software for CD burning and have used it pretty much since I had a 2x Ricoh CD Writer !! Anyways, as AlecStaar pointed out, and as the Roxio site says, Direct CD doesn't work in XP and we already know that Take Two doesn't work in 2000 so we assume the same in XP. So as long as you DON'T INSTALL DIRECTCD OR TAKE TWO then it will work perfectly. Which is what I did because I don't use those two facilities of the software (phew!) - and it's been working ever since I installed it. Anyways, problem solved (or at least identified) and hopefully there will be patches to follow.

Cheers. That confirms my suspicions when I first read your post. Did it again today with just my KB, Mouse and iPAQ plugged in ! Really strange.

Western Digital Hard Drive NOT Working in Win2k
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Hardware
Nope it's not on a RAID controller. It's a different computer to my normal one. System specs: K6/2-450 on a Gigabyte 5AA Motherboard. 256Mb SDRAM PC133. 6Gb Western Digital Hard Drive. ATI Rage Pro PCI Graphics Card. -
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to keep hold of it forever, but i'm not going to give up straight away when there's good fiddling around to be done. Besides it's more fun getting it working when it shouldn't (original definition of hacking btw) so there. Saying that it's always quite good getting new stuff.......Geforce 3 Ultra I hear you say ?

Western Digital Hard Drive NOT Working in Win2k
philbarnes replied to philbarnes's topic in Hardware
No it's definately a happy hard disk - I am just not sure if it is compatible with Windows 2000 or maybe there's a fix for it. No bad sectors. Always install my OS's clean. Only way to go. And yes I did a full format. -
No there wasn't a lesson here because most of us bought our cards when 3dfx WASN'T a "dead/dying company" - and anyway all we are trying to do is get some semblance of it working on XP as it's not a bad card and still worked perfectly under 2000. It's just a matter of time until we fix it........
-
Or just go but a cheap Netgear one and it'll just work !
-
Hey I have had that too - my USB stuff suddenly dies for no reason - I thought it was because it was overloaded and I have since unplugged my USB hub and that seems to have fixed it but I have a Gigabyte 7IX motherboard which uses an AMD chipset for USB ! System: MS Intellimouse Optical Compaq iPAQ 3630 MS Internet KB Pro (acts as hub for abouve two) Swift CARDport SM Reader Epson 740 USB Canon N650U Belkin 4 Port Self Powered Hub (acts as hub for above devices) [unplugged] I wouldn't mind knowing if this is the same type of thing !

Easy CD is quite fussy - I got this from the Roxio Website: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Is Easy CD Creator compatible with XP? A. Easy CD Creator 5.1 Platinum will offer XP support. This version will be available in retail stores soon after the release of XP. For customers that own older versions 5.0, 4.X or 3.X, Roxio will offer upgrade options to 5.1. We will post information, as we get closer to the XP launch. -------------------------------------------------------------------- On my computer it works without a flaw but I don't use either DirectCD or Take Two because these are troublesome to say the least ! Ah here you go: -------------------------------------------------------------------- However, you will not be able to use the current version of DirectCD due to a driver conflict with XP. -------------------------------------------------------------------- So there don't install Take Two or DirectCD ! To check your writer is compatible go here: http://www.roxio.com/en/jhtml/cdrdatabase/database.jhtml Also just to be contraversial - don't install the patch to 5.02 and see if it works then as I never bothered and it seems to be fine !

Right this is a really bad problem. When I boot into XP, it says that it cannot load my profile and that it has created a temporary one so that all settings I change will be lost when I log off which means I basically can't use it and I would describe it as totally screwed ! I have no idea what is causing this and I have reinstalled it once and repaired it but all to no avail ! Real bummer - has anyone heard of / eXPerienced anything like this before ? It's really doing my head in - I've tried just about everything. Message reads as follows: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. DETAIL - Error performing inpage operation. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! Why me ?

Hi all, don't suppose there is anyone out there who has tried or knows of a way to get voodoo5's working in OpenGL. Will the latest Win2k drivers work and is there anyone who has tried them with the latest build (2600) ? Any help or tips appreciated !
-
Look mate, comments like those will never accomplish anything. We know that there will be no OFFICIAL support for the voodoo series but we still want to try and fix what we can with it. They were and still are a good video cards and we are quite attatched to them. Call us old skool if you like but there you go. As to your remarks re: hacks and getting it working using whatever methods possible - well why not ? We've got our cards which we payed good money for, why not try and get them working. I don't care what all the nVidia crowd think on the matter - we all know that the GeForce chipsets are extremely good at what they do and when I get around to upgrading my system (probably about Xmas) I will get myself a 1.4Ghz Athlon, 1Gb DDR Ram and a GeForce3 Ultra (cos I can chuck good money after bad) - and that will be spiffing, and until then I will make do with my current setup as only games really suffer under XP with a Voodoo5, and anyway, Direct3D works so I CAN play CS, Worms World Party and Red Alert 2 quite happily. Anyways, enough of this idle chit chat, back to work. Also if anyone wants to help me out with my last post then please reply here ! I would like to know how you flukey b*******ds managed to get the drivers installed - I think that's the only problem I have. Might try a clean install on a different hard disk and see if it works then but that's just hassleworthy. Cheers anyways !

Here is a link to Microsoft saying there will be a .mp3 addition to Media Player, is there anywhere I can get this now: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/windowsxp/mpxpmp3.asp Alternatively can you do this another way ?

Right, this is starting to annoy me. When I tried to install it - everything works until it tries to register the .dll's at which point it complains that it cannot register the .dll's and gives me the Options: Abort|Retry|ignore so i press ignore and guess what - i reboot and it is back in 4-bit colour again at 640x480 ! Help !
