..to check the version of DirectX in most every flavor of Windows since the release of Win98se or possibly earlier, you can run the DX diagnostic utility which will test aspects of hardware/software which utilize DirectX. To run the utility goto Start -> Run , and type 'dxdiag' (w/out quotes) ..enjoi!
