I'm saving some of my VHS tapes on VCD's with VirtualDub. I have some microsof codecs, divx, xvid but NO mpeg1 or mpeg2 codec. I need mpeg1 for video CD's and mpeg2 for super video cd's. I searched the web for such codecs but cannot find them. Does anyone know where I can find them. Thanks.

OK. I'm getting a new internet connection next week. Something a bit faster that will replace my US Robotics 56k EXT FAX modem 8). I've been talking to the provider if I can hook up 2 computers via switch. They said that that's not allowed so I'm wondering is there a way they can find out. What if I do an internet connecion sharing in xp's instead of a swithch. Does anyone know more about this? And what is better switch, router, hub and what is the difference? Thanks
-
Yes you can mix drives, that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I checked for a router but it's too expensive (for now), I'll try microsoft's connection sharing. Jasbo I'm also running SuSE 8.0 on the second machine and I doubt that microsoft connection sharing would do any good. Can I configure a linux machine to act as a router?

You can download a low level format utility from the manufacturers site. I don't know about seagate but try here http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/index.html It's either DiscWizard or SeaTools. I one of these you should find something like a low lever format utility or write zeros to disk... probably in advanced oprtions. It'll wipe your disk clean so backup before you do that. You might also run any diagnostic tool inside seatools for any other errors. Jbod is short for just a bunch of disks. If you have a raid controller this option enables you to use all available disk size. If you setup raid 0 (striping) with a 60 and 80 GB drives you'll end up with a single 120GB drive 2x the smallest drive, but if you use jbod you'll have a 140GB (60+80) drive.

The only drive manufacturer that I have no dead drives of (yet) is maxtor I have two 40 GB maxtors D540x Quite fast and silent, no probs 20GB WD200EB Even more silent than the maxtors, but had a few bad sectors, wich I fixed with a low level format, now working with no probs. 20GB WD205BA 7200rpm the loudest and the slowest, but no problems. A friend of mine has a 60GB WD also no problems. I also have a some fujitsus 8,4 and 4,2 GB Also no probs, but don't know how the new ones are. I've seen a lot of dead IBM's a 10GB after 2 years, a 4 gb scsi and some smaller, but still have a 3,2 gb running loud as hell. After you get a new drive you could low level format on the old drive, might get rid of those bad sectors If you're planning to setup a raid, the ideal is if you have two equal drives. If you don't you can still use jbod. So I'd go for a maxtor or a WD. Also look for what has the longest waranty

My friend has the same problem with his dsl modem and windows xp. He uses a "workaround". He unplugs the cable and boots into xp's than plugs the cable back in. I know this is no real solution. What happens if you enter a static ip?

Partition recovery program - thread i made months ago, where

http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecovery/ you can try that -
Did you think about i850 /rimm combination? If it's more expensive don't go for it 'cos i845e is a newer chipset. Go for intel / intel combination, I do not recommend amd, sis or via. Get a good mobo intel or abit, maybe asus and good ram I don't know which one is the best, cos they don't sell curcial here, but I heard infineon and goldstar are quite good. I'd go for 1gb ram, you can still upgrade if it's not enough. Good luck.

I'm running XP's on an old monitor. The problem is that the screen is too far right. And I can't adjust it. Is there a program to adjust this. I have a Nvidia Geforce MX. ATI has this controls built in with the driver they're called Adjustments and you can change the screen size and position there. Does anyone know of such a program for nvidia cards? Please help

Screen Adjustments for Nvidia based cards
Tomay replied to Tomay's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Four and twenty you're my man. That was what I was looking for in the firs place. I knew nvidia had such a thing, but I forgot where it was. So thanks a lot everyone. -
One of the first I tried was mandrake 7.2, wich was quite cool. Then I tried Redhat 7.1 and 7.2 (7.1 worked better). Now I use SuSE 8.0 and maybe I should upgrade to 8.1. It has cool features like Yast2 and you can upgrade it over the internet. (You can probably do this with other distibution too) I think I shold try debian too, but SuSE is very easy to use.

Screen Adjustments for Nvidia based cards

I know I can set any resolution I want the problem is that none of them is correctly centered except 60Hz, and I don't watn 60Hz. 72Hz is too much down and left, 75Hz is too much right and the monitor won't go above 75. It's an old 14 inch piece. I know this can be done, it's no problem in linux... -
From the wd page: error 101 Unknown error. An unknown error has occurred during testing. This may be an anomaly. Check connections and retest. If the error repeats, replace the drive. You should replace it. Even if it does work again I wouldn't rely on such a drive.

2 networked computers 1 Suse 8.0 2 windows 98 I mount the windows files like this #smbmount \\\\tomay\\c /mnt/c Everything works ok until I want to view a folder that contains files with localised characters (©ÐÈÆ®¹ðèæ¾) you probably won't be able to read them. When I browse to such a folder the browser just stops responding. I can kill the X with ctrl+alt+bckspace but if I try to browse /mnt/c folder the same thing happens. Is there a solution for this???? How can I unmount //tomay/c It won't unmoun using -f It stops on shutdown, when it tries to unmount (complaining about the connection being in use), so I have to turn the computer off manualy. Is there something stronger than umount -f ???? Please help.

samba halts when viewing floders with localised chars
Tomay replied to Tomay's topic in Linux Networking
My version of samba is 2.2.3a I can browse the windows98 computer with Konqueror entering smb://tomay/c and it gives me no errors, but the localization is not right, I get some strange characters. [Edit] I fixed the codepage in samba.conf file, but when I mount I still get the error. I guess latest version of samba is next... -

I get the same error with LinNeighborhood. How do I determine wich version of samba I have? The latest is 2.2.7a -
No problem here. XP no service pack GF2MX 30.82 Directx 8.1 It could be the DX9 or the 40.xx detonators.

Does it autodetect the disks in BIOS? -
When I first logged on as root I changed the red background with something that didn't hurt my eyes so much, but after I rebooted it was all back. I can not change the background the color of the desktop font ... even if I restart X it's all back to the default settings. If i log on as a normal user (not as root) I don't have such problems. How can I change the root desktop settings?? I use KDE

I'm gonna play around some with the chmod command. Where can I find what the -rwxr-xr-x means. I know that r-read w-write x-execute. But is there a good howto on this.

I'm running as a normal user now, but when I mount and unmount I get errors that only root can do that. Is there a way to give higher priorities to a normal user.
