Intel and Intel! For something stable get a intel 845 with ddr or 850 with rimm. The first might be a little cheaper. Do not get a via/amd combination. Especially the cheaper motherboards are horror (e.g. matsonic ...). I would recommend something from ABIT with a P4.

Maybe the Russians should build space shuttles. If a Russian space shuttle blew up the public wouldn't know about it.

Try to install any other software (Not games). I had a similar problem once. The cause was that I have disebled some stupid service (can't remembre wich one).

My experience was that I had to create a user with the name of the other computer. (W2k-W98) But with XP's there was no need to do so. Yeah and don't forget to turn off the firewalls!!!

Quote: hardwire it to 100 Mbs Full Duplex. How do you do that? Did you check out http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm For how long do you get high pings? Is there something strange in the taskmanager while you have such high pings is it at 100%? Hope you figure it out

I had no preoblems winning the race. Never mind if you're not first in the twisted section. You've got the top speed on the straights and there you'll beat them. BtW did you try megagames.com or gamecopyworld.com?

Yes I've done that with a 800MB seagate and a 2Gb seagate. It can be done you only need the right tools and a clean place to do it (as few dust and airflow as possible). On the 800MB I changed the drive platters and the heads. Use latex gloves like the one they use in the hospital (You don't want finger prints on your drives) and if some dust gets on the platters do not blow!!! cos you'll only spit some saliva on the platters. You need some of those torx screwdrivers or it'll be very tough to get the disks apart. If you have an old drive that doesn't work take it apart first just for training. I don't know if you can get to the control mechanism of the heads from the outside. Search the seagate.com for any info on the disk. I found assembly plans for the 800's (I think it was at the end of the manual) on their site. Is the data on the drive very important? You might have to change the heads with the control pcb, cos they might be in one piece. Depends on the drive type. Hope it helps. Post back if you have more questions. Good luck!

;( I have a WDC WD205BA 20gig hdd on a QDI BrillianX IS/2000. When I autodetect the hdd it detects it correctly TYPE SIZE CYLS HEAD PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE USER 20523 2495 255 0 39769 63 LBA But the nex time I boot even if I press ctrl+alt+del the disk turns into a 7927MB drive, or at least the bios reports it as sutch. Standard cmos menu: TYPE SIZE CYLS HEAD PRECOMP LANDZ SECTOR MODE User 7921 963 255 0 39769 63 LBA The drive seems to work ok even with this settings (XP sees drive as 20Gb) Has anyone had similar problems? I tested the WD200EB 20GB drive and it works correctly with no problems. It only comes up with the WD205BA. I'm going to test it on another motherboard, but I doub it will show the same error, cos I asume the error is bios related (Yes I have the latest bios). I don't know if this is just a cosmetic error or can it do harm. As a workaround I've set the drive on autodetect, so it's detected on every boot. You can turn if off for all drives with powertoys XP (tweakui). I'll have to check if you can set when the low disk space warning goes off. -
Removing SCSI disk wreaks havoc on dual boot system :(
Tomay replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Hardware
Had to reformat a few disks before I figured that out. You can do two things. 1. Remove grub from linux (I only use lilo, so don't ask me how) 2. Insert the win2k CD and boot into recovery console and run "FIXMBR" if that doesn't help you can also try "FIXBOOT". The problem is that linux overwrites the windows mbr with grub or lilo. After you do either of those two things you won't be able to boot into linux. http://www.ntcompatible.com/faqshow.php?id=34 You MUST read this. P.S. Backup any important data I have only done that on ide hdd's. Good Luck -
It does exist in the xp. Run "d:\i386\winnt32.exe /?" straight from XP's asuming you have the windows xp cdrom inserted in drive d:, a nice help window will popup 8)

I had a similar problem a while ago. I runed chkdsk /f command from the command line (XP was running). If I ran chkdsk from the same drive I want to check it gave me a message about a program using somethin ... ... But if I ran the program like this D:\>chkdsk c: /f I had no such messages. Try running scandisc from another drive or from a floppy.

Spontaneous reboots are mostly hardware's fault. Most often bad memory. But it could be anything. And that really sucks ;(
-
You sholud really consider linux. BTW How big is your HDD?
-
Did you check the event log for any strange errors? Are this spontaneous reboots or can you see the "windows is shutting down" screen? Try to disable advanced power management in the windows. It doesn't make a much difference what you set in the bios except the STR (suspend to ram) and POS (power on suspend). Try to install "standard pc" instead of "ACPI computer". (can't remember how to do that) Try to unplug the power switch from the motherboard and the green switch if you have one. It could be that they are buggy :x (just to exclude the possibility) If this won't help, post back, we have some more.

Sorry for the bad link. Here's a new one, but I doubt it will help. http://www.ntcompatible.com/story.php?id=16046

Did you try the dos program from maxtor? And run it in from the command line? Also check out http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=14&var2=0

Quote: You could try asking symantec, but I doubt that'd be of much help. Their usual answer is that's not supported and we'd love to sell you a new version of our products? However "that's not a supported configuration" in no way means it doesn't work, it just means Symantec isn't willing to risk their reputation on telling you it will, because they haven't tested it or know of one or two issues they're not willing to tell you about. Cheers and good luck, Christian I use to like norton utilities 3.0, but after I tried the 2003 version I'm disapointed. The disc doctor has no settings at all, for the suface test. And in the speed disk I'm missing the walk map option and sort files and and ... Is there a different version of norton 2003 in wich the disc doctor has a surface test option? But then again, who cares. When the HDD will crash I'll get a new one anyway. BACKUP OFTEN!!!

There use to be good programs for detecting weak sectors. One of them was norton's calibrat.exe (some old dos version). You could do a pattern test and it found errors, that scandisk or norton disk doctor did not. Some hard drive manufacturers utilities have sutch features. I got a hold of a 20GB western digital WD200EB, that had some bad sectors. I low level formated it with the wd's utility and it's showing no errors ... ... for now 8) If anyone know a program to test the drive for future errors (weak sectors), please let me know. I would use calibrat but I doubt that ist supports fat32 I know this tests are only good for testing the surface of the drive (e.g. future bad sectors).

Stop advertising Micro$oft Packman, cos they have done enough damage . Anyway. I don't know if you guys use the power on password feature on your computers. Well QDI and Abit motherboards have this feature so that you can turn on your computer just with a keyboard key or a click of your mouse. That it the reason why they leave power in the mouse and keyboard. But it would be nice if you could just turn off this feature for the mouse.

I found no solution to this problem. But I think It burns the files even if they are more than 255 character long. Make a test. Put a few files in directories of 8 and more, and filenames longer than 255 and burn them to see if you can read them from the burned cd. I think nero starts to complain about files beeing too long if they are longer than 64 chars. You could also zip or rar the whole thing, and it even takes up less space.

Can you plug the mouse in the usb port? I have an ABIT ST6 with a logitech optical mouse and the led goes off if it's plugged into the usb port. I had a ps2 optical mouse and the turned on led whn the computer was powered down annoyed me to. I didn't even look for a way to turn it off, cos I use a power On password to turn on my computer. Hope somebody else knows more bout this.

Quote: In my opinion and based on my experiences, I have my hdd1 and hdd2 on IDE1, and my optical drives on IDE2. When I need to copy a CD, I always create an image first. Maybe that's just an old habit from when CDRW drives were plagued with buffer underruns, but I've never had a bad burn from imaging to a temp file first. I have the same config as you. HDD1 & 2 on IDE1 and CDRW & DVD on IDE2. First there was only one HDD in the system, but when I added the second HDD it all became slower. If I run a movie from the second HDD it takes quite a while before it starts and a lot of other things go slower. HDD 1 = 20 GB IBM (I think)(ATA 66) HDD 2 = 60 GB WD (ATA 100) Would it help if i put 1 HDD and 1 optical on each ide channel? Right now I can't transfer the system to the 60 GB drive, but I will asap. I read somewhere that certain drives from different manufacturers dont work when on the same channel? (I remember from the old days (486) that I couldn't get a seagate and a wd drive to work on the same cable). Help. What is the best solution.
