Sorry about the Linux comment, I'm running Mandrake 9 myself. I've tried SuSE and Red Hat also. Their are two different criteria that we deal with here. Linux (and of course UNIX) have excellent security and networking features. Most of the time these are far ahead of NT. The problem is that these work flawlessly on a system where not much change takes place, but, that doesn't seem to hold up when a lot of program and system reconfiguration is going on. Linux has the strength here, but, not the durability. Everyone likes to put down windows, but, it's not as simple as that. To put it another way... I can slam my W2K system around all day long without a problem. Programs in/out, multiple reboots, all sorts of weird configurations, and it just keeps chugging along. Linux tends to be a lot more brittle environment which I've often seen break with that same abuse. On the other hand when left in a set configuration, well, we all have heard how a walled up Linux (or UNIX) box is found running years later... the other issue is the security one. In a large business or government environment, it is essential that one has impeccable security in place. In the kind of personal and small business environment that I deal with, that kind of security is difficult and many times irrelevant. Many of the 'serious' security issues that 'everyone' is so concerned about apply mainly to the government and big business environments. Now I'm not saying that I don't use security, but, required parameters are much different in that small business than in the large impersonal workplace. So, I guess I'll keep Mandrake as a second system on the computer. And, if anyone is determined to run Linux, I'd definitely recommend Mandrake. But, I think that W2K will remain as my main workstation environment for the foreseeable future.

If you use ZoneAlarm as your firewall, then just block MSM as a server. I think that 'should' still allow messages, but not file transfers.

For as long as I can remember there have been reports that Outlook and Outlook Express don't play well together. I have never seen any real solutions for this except that if you are going to use Outlook Express, then, 'uninstall' Outlook. I know, that wasn't what you wanted to hear. Isn't it strange that the worst conflicts are always with MS products on MS systems ;-)? My personal solution is that I now use TheBat!, and wouldn't be caught dead using Outlook, Outlook Express, or Hotmail. These are all spam, virus, and manevolent script paradise.

If you plan to get the latest and greatest on your motherboard then: 1) wait to evaluate until just before you must have it, then read all the relevant reviews. Things like serial HD support and 8X AGP are just hitting the dealers shelves. Serial Drives aren't even on the shelves. I think that one would be wise to wait until that all shapes up. 2) Why RDram??? RDram is a very bad investment at this point with questionable advantages. Ask, 'Is their a reason why everybody is now designing for DDR?' 3) Abit is fine and undoubtedly has a board that will work for you, but, so do others. Don't limit your options. 4) Plan to pay top dollar, and you realize, by second quarter next year this will 'all' be obsolete ;-). Good luck.

LOL... I just did one like that for my mother ;-) Best use win95, Opera, and a freeware mail program other than Outlook Express (there are a couple of good ones). IE and Outlook Express are way too bloated. What you want is minimalism here ;-).

Linux uses its own drivers, so, there is no relevence here, and, If Nero could use its own drivers then it would. So, I just don't see Nero as a working solution. You'll be wasting you time with that. Your old copy of Easy CD Creator should be upgradeable on the Roxio website, so that may indeed be a solution, and, obviously that has direct support for your burner. http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/software_updates.jhtml Good luck.

I'm running 2 boxes with w2k and I've not had a problem with any of my burners that I could't resolve, but... You say that Nero didn't recognize your burner before you put in the aspi fix. I would be somewhat suspicious that Nero would much rather use its own drivers, but doesn't have direct support for the TDK VeloCD CD-RW. And, as you say, your asking for trouble with the two drivers. With an 8X burner, the latest version of Nero could be more of a problem than a fix. If you can get ahold of a late 4.x copy of Roxio (Adaptec), and it recoginizes your burner, that might be a reliable solution, since it uses the Adaptec driver. In my experience, the 4.x Roxio software was quite reliable under w2k, and not nearly as bad an interface as the later stuff. The other suggestion is that it is time to retire that 8x burner, and get something that Nero will recognize. The're real cheap right now and 'a lot' faster ;-)

The fact that this is occuring on two seperate machines would be a strong indication to me that the problem is with the program and not with the other variables.
