Win2k Pro and dx8.1 didn't go down well on mine, i had a similar problem with fifa2002 where i just got lines running down the screen and white blank screens, this was using dx8.1, downgraded to 8.0a and everythings fine now. Also have you tried the compatibility patch, think it's on this site not sure where i downloaded it from though, try google for a win2k compatibility patch

Good Modem i've used is the Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro, really good modem connects at 50.6kbps, Plus it's not all down to your modem, could be isp, changing isp, phone line etc.. But the best i've seen are ones that use Rockwell chips or Rockwell modems which are very rare thesedays.

Also nero/clonecd here. Although i've heard some good comments about Easy CD Creator which i havn't tried.
