Guys for a heavy gamer and Internet user which OS is better?
bilston replied to pr-man's topic in Software
I agree with Admiral LSD on his post. If you don't like the GUI, disable themes. Thats the lamest (yet most used) excuse for calling XP crap by FAR. System Restore, again, disable it! ffs man... The only problem that I have with it at the moment is that Windows Update wont work on my machine, I think I know why though *cough* -
After I restarted the PC to apply the changes, it wouldn't go to the desktop, I just got a blue screen with some crap on it. Had to reformat.

get xsetup from www.xteq.com load the default gui and go down to Startup/shutdown > shutdown > program timeouts. Set them to 3 seconds.

PP said that XP checks the network for an available IP, it is then assigned one. My Network IS my ISP, so essentially shouldn't I have to contact them about it, if they're the ones giving me an IP for the NIC? Thanks
-
Thanks, I'll contact my ISP to see if I'm allowed a static IP.
-
Is this option available to me in XP? If so could someone please tell me how to change it. TIA.

Hi, just got a network card for my cable modem and now the computer takes a lot longer to boot up, is there anyway to make it boot faster? Thanks
-
I take it its safe to delete them? Thats what I've been doing

In My Computer, click Tools > Folder Options. Then click "Open Each Folder In It's Own Window". Click Apply, and then you're done -
Try grabbing hold of the Det 21.85's m8. There was also a link that someone posted, that showed many different solutions to combatting this damn annoying problem. I'll have a look for it.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I figured the problem out, but it's been pretty much ok, for ages now I've checked the properties and I've got Windows 98 / ME compatability mode switched on, and "DIsable Visual Themes" checked. Tell your friend to try that on the shortcut and all should be ok. Hopefully

How come I just defragmented my system partition using Diskeeper before XP starts then (as in when chkdsk runs)? And after checking the state of the drive in Windows, it does infact now show that the Pagefile is one big cluster, as opposed to lots of seperate ones. My system starts quicker now too, which is nice

Tried the latest drivers for your Cable Modem/DSL box?

Mine always puts it on the System drive, strange your's did otherwise. I wouldn't think anything of it. Not sure why it did that though. -
