  1. Want the most bang for your buck? This game is First-Person, Action, Adventure, Role Playing, Horror, Sci-Fi, and Suspense all in one. It is the single greatest single-player genre-bending game I know (yes, better than "Deus Ex"), and also the only one that has repeatedly scared and startled me. It also plays just fine on W2K and WinXP (just run "setup.exe -LGNTFORCE" to install). Those who haven't listed it in this thread haven't played the game. It's called System Shock 2. Those who don't like to be frightened need not apply. It's rated mature, so the young ones should not play it. Yes, it's won numerous Game of the Year Awards. Yes, it has multiplayer co-op mode, though you shouldn't use it your first time through. And if anyone knows how to make a multiplayer game play in the "impossible" difficulty level, please let me know.

    Colin McRae in Win2k

Oof. I don't know about that. You could try reinstalling it, or redownloading incase the download was corrupted. If you're using WinXP, use ACT 2.0. Anyone else know what the problem might be?

    Asus A7N266-C Windows XP Problems

Not sure if any of this will help, but in case it does... I'm using XP on an Asus A7N266-C, though I'm using the original BIOS. One thing I've noticed: it doesn't like to shut down properly with USB devices attached, sometimes I'll need to manually power down after the mouse pointer doesn't move anymore. It'll shut down fine without anything in the USB though. So you could try using a PS/2 Keyboard and mouse temporarily, and see if that helps any. Also, nvidia has new nForce drivers you could try out. (I might try them out soon myself)

    Quake 3 + Intellimouse Optical

Disabling "Enhance Pointer Precision" is only a general thing that FPS players should uncheck. (as well as eliminating any other form of mouse acceleration). It likely won't help with the Q3 issue, specifically, but it might help your game (game in the "you got game" sense). As far as a solution to the Q3 problem, the best thing I can think of is Unreal Tournament.

    Quake 3 + Intellimouse Optical

Quote: The latest version of intellipoint doesn't allow you to do that unfortunately. Hit the drop-down box (in mouse properties, under buttons tab) and select "Keystroke..." then type in any regular key. As far as the latest version disabling it, I doubt that, they're still advertising button custimization. What version are you using? I've got 4.00.0657. As far as I know, it's the latest. Might want to reinstall the Intellipoint software, or download the latest, if you're not up to date.

    Quake 3 + Intellimouse Optical

I'm not sure if this would work (don't have Q3--why would I? I've got UT! ) but have you tried binding keyboard commands to the fourth and fifth buttons, and then binding those keyboard commands to the actions you want those buttons to perform in Q3? Remember to disable "Enhance Pointer Precision" in mouse properties.

Guys which of these mice are best for FPS's?

Neither. I suggest a corded mouse. 1) Cordless mice typically have a delayed response. 2) Cordless mice become unresponsive if they move out of the range of the receiver. 3) Cordless mice are heavier, as they carry the added weight of batteries. These three things will only hurt your FPS gaming. 4) IMHO, cordless mice are a waste of batteries (and money since batteries aren't cheap--and neither are the cordless mice themselves). This, of course, isn't great for the environment, and the money you spend on batteries equals less to spend on FPS games. I would suggest the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical (which I use), or the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer. Both have 5 customizable buttons (can be mapped to almost any keyboard key, meaning you can actually use all 5 mouse buttons in most games) and scrolling wheel (which doubles as the 3rd button). Both are optical, meaning consistant movement without need for cleaning. And both (check back of box to be sure it's the latest version) have 6,000 image per second scan, meaning moving the mouse too fast will much less likely result in the problem associated with slower optical mice (most only scan at 1500-2000 images per second). Don't be fooled into thinking that heavier mice are "better built" or "more solid" than lighter mice. Optical technology doesn't make the mouse's required components heavy at all. A heavy optical mouse is likely so only because the manufacturer adds heavy metal weights. I think lighter is better, especially in FPS gaming. If you'd like to go with the Logitech brand (I much prefer Logitech's joysticks over Microsoft's, so don't think I'm an M$-only product fan) I'd suggest the MouseMan Dual Optical. I'm skeptical of the "Twice as fast, twice as accurate" claim, when it comes to the fast part. Each sensor can only compare its current image with its (and not its counterparts) previous image. I could see the dual optical sensors being more accurate however, but only on some surfaces which may return slightly changing images to the sensors, like maybe on carpet. Keep in mind that the Intellimouse Explorer and the Mouseman Dual Optical are right-hand only mice. Whichever of the three feels most comfortable in your hand is probably the best choice.

    Rogue squadron on win2k?

Quote: ...I don't have a usb game controller. So, I somehow doubt that's my problem either. This very well could be the problem. I don't have this game, but X-wing Vs. TIE Fighter wouldn't even allow me to play the game if it didn't detect a joystick first. And it wouldn't detect my USB joystick until I unchecked "EmulateJoystick" under QFixApp's Fixes tab. Check the box to see if it requires a joystick. If so, you'll need one to play, and I wouldn't suggest using a gameport joystick, or an analog USB joystick (look for a digital USB joystick, that specifically says it's compatible with W2K).

Have the latest WHQL certified drivers for your video card? If so, you could try lowering the acceleration of the video. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings (tab)>advanced>Troubleshoot (tab), and then slide the acceleration slider a notch or two to the left. The more left you go, the less your graphics card will assist the CPU, but it increases compatibility. Remember to set it back for other games/applications.

Opinions on Win-XP and General Gaming

Rate fixes are easy. What isn't easy is having a quarter-second (or more) delay between when you move the mouse, and when the game recognizes it. Or lack (from what I've read) of being able to truly eliminate all mouse acceleration. Hopefully this is an issue that will be looked into by game developers and maybe even M$ themselves.

Opinions on Win-XP and General Gaming

Windows 9x has an edge over XP--when it comes to mouse control, and a handful of games that refuse to run in XP. Other than that XP takes the cake. Why did M$ have to mess with the mouse input anyway?
