So the OS is trying to load the levels from the CD? Maybe try a reinstalling with a full install of all files (if the installer offers such an install), so that files need not be loaded from the CD (despite the CD being in good condition). Have you tried ACT 1.5? Do you have the games latest patch installed?

Has anyone had any luck with Macrovision's SafeDisc Driver Fix? It's supposed to fix NT based OS' difficulties in launching SafeDisc protected content from legit CDs. If you've tried using it and it's worked or hasn't worked, please share your results. I searched around the forums, and didn't really find anything conclusive as to how effective the fix is. Any feedback would be appreciated.

What do you consider the best computer game ever made?
ConQueso replied to pr-man's topic in Slack Space
Unreal Tournament System Shock 2 Deus Ex Unreal Star Control 2 X-Wing Alliance -
I'd suggest any responses be posted on the same thread in the Win2K games section, and not here.

Download the latest compatibility update from Windows Update and download the patch on this page.
-
Try running it with ACT. Use Win98 layer. Go here for more info on how.
-
create ACT fixes using the win98 layer, and with EmulateJoystick UNchecked under fixes. Use this FAQ for any questions on how to do this.

I've heard of difficulties getting it to run in XP, and it won't run in W2K until SP3 is released. This is why I still suggest 1.5 and 2.0.

No problem. You're welcome.

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...
ConQueso replied to The Modfather's topic in Games
I'd keep the game running at at least 800x600. I've heard XP doesn't like less. Were you running it at 640x480 with bad sound? -
Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Under QFixApp win98 layer, with no sound acceleration, you're still getting the bad sound? Huh... Do you have the latest sound card drivers? Maybe check Creative Labs' site for updated drivers. -
Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...
ConQueso replied to The Modfather's topic in Games
Hey, try this to fix the sound: Try setting your sound configuration (in the game) to it's simplest settings (ie, no 3D sound, etc.) If that doesn't work, try this: Click Start, Run, type in DXDIAG, click OK, Click the Sound tab, slide the acceleration adjustment to all the way to the left. If this works, try exiting the game, launching DXDIAG and sliding sound acceleration one notch to the right. Keep doing this until you know the highest sound acceleration you can use with it still sounding good. -
I've started a thread questioning the effectiveness of the above mentioned fix. Don't know what kind of response it'll get though.

Well, when it comes to the debugger, I stick to the "Don't know" response in my second post However, I did some digging in the forums, and found an interesting link. This fix would only help, though, if the game's problem is safedisc related. And even if it is, who knows if the fix works on said game... Use at your own risk. Quote: Some of you may be running into the POS Safedisc protection. A fix was released last month not sure how well it works tho: http://www.macrovision.com/solutions/software/fix.php3 If you get errors in your event log when running a game with Safedisc protection try this patch...

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Don't know of a 1.2 beta. Have you tried 1.1? -
Ah, yes. There definately needs to be a System Shock 3. Ya hear that, Ion Storm! When you're done with Theif ]I[, it's System Shock 3, understood? It's only right! Bring it on, SHODAN! I'm ready for you, Beyotch.

What I don't get is how so many gamers don't bother with the old games of their preferred genre, even if they were top rated or even game of the year. Before I burn money on new games, I try to find the cheaper, top rated games of yesterday. FPS games of today could (and should) learn a thing or two from old games. For instance, the ambient, non-hostile life forms in Unreal; the sound, atmosphere, and interfaces in System Shock 2 (Deus Ex should've used a more SS2 like hacking interface than the lame one it used); the nearly cinematic (yet still seen from the first person view) events in Half-Life; and the incredible story/plot and open-ended gameplay of Deus Ex.

Quote: Doom 3 is going to be the best game, looking at the graphics, ever. More to a game than the graphics. Like gameplay, atmosphere, story, sound, interface... Want to play a good game in a dark room with a headset? Try System Shock 2. This game is still the best single player FPS game I've played. Hopefully Unreal ][ or DX2 will change that.

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Try this. -
Well, you could try what follows, but only do so if it's your own system, as it may cause problems. Click Start, Run, Type in DXDIAG, Click OK, click on the More Help tab, click on Override, then type in 60, then click OK. This should limit D3D games to 60mhz refresh rate.

As long as you've clicked the Run button in the QFixApp window, it should be running through QFixApp. WHQL drivers=Windows Hardware Quality Labs certified drivers for various hardware. Go to windows update, click product updates, and check if there are any drivers at the bottom of the list. DXDIAG brings up the DirectX Diagnostic tool, which lists what hardware the computer is using (or thinks it's using). By hardware, I mean what Video card, what sound card, what CPU, what RAM, etc you're using on your system. Also, are you logged in with administrator privileges? Read the 3rd, 4th, and 6th questions and answers on the FAQ for more info.

Quote: ...Unreal--which was just mind-blowing awesome when I saw it (still is, BTW)... I agree. Never before had I perceived such a sense of depth while playing a video game as I did when I first looked down from the edge of the first cliff to the water below. Unreal Gold is a steal at $10, for anyone who's looking for a good FPS game at a great price. Totally Unreal (around $20) includes Unreal Gold, and Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition, for those who haven't realized that UT is still the best action-based multiplayer FPS game out there. Hopefully it'll soon be trumped by UT2003, but with slow systems out there, UT will still have its place for a couple more years, and will be staying on my HD for a while. Mod Squad reviews many mods that expand UT gameplay, and will likely keep on top of UT2003 mods/mutators as well.
