Another thing, Can changing a shared drive to a non-shared drive while a network is running cause any problems? That was the only thing different before the WinME laptop mysteriously began getting "rejected by server" in UT. Doesn't seem to make much sense, though.

Just wondering how important it is to have a "Microsoft Digital Signature". I was going to update my (intel) network card drivers to version 5.1.3, and it warned me about no signature. Alienware lists 5.0.3 on there support site, so maybe those are the most recent with a signature? I'd just downloaded Intel network drivers from windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with driver dates not as recent as 5.1.3's). Should I wait for the next windowsupdate listed drivers, or install Intel's latest? My OS is Win2000.

Okay, after looking at other posts, it SEEMS (I'm a rookie when it comes to networking) that I need to do any or all of the following. I was just wondering if someone could possibly put these _in_order_ of what I should try first, what I should try last, what I should avoid trying for such and such reason, etc, or even add something that I may have missed. A. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP B. Uncheck "Use simple file sharing" on XP system(s) C. Turn off ICS Firewall (if applicable) D. Untick "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" E. Delete key {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} on XP system(s) (should I also delete this key on Win2000 systems or 9x systems?) I'm asking this because I 1) don't have the XP system here at the moment (it's a friends system) 2) Would like to make minimal changes on a system that isn't mine, and 3) would like to solve the problem in a somewhat timely manner, and 4) I figure it might benefit others to put in order or somehow rank these setting adjustments. Thanks.

Xiven, Regarding "The delay while browsing WinME shares using the WinXP machine...", I was wondering, is this only with WinME, or does it apply to any Win9x system? I'm experiencing similar problems, but when accessing a shared folder across a LAN from XP -> Win95. And, you delete the key from the XP, and not the 95 system, correct?

Oh, and if it helps: I'm running W2K with a GeForce2 MX 400 with the latest WHQL drivers (21.83 i think) WW2F is also patched to the latest version. 512MB RAM P4 1.4Ghz

One more thing: To use QFixApp, log in as administrator.

I've changed my monitor to run at 120 Hz in 640x480 (highest safe Hz according to the manual), yet when I run UT at the same resolution, the monitor goes back to 70 hz (as the UT screen image fills the whole screen (I hadn't resized 120 Hz to do so), and as the FPS peak at 70). I tried advanced options, but I think game running speed was under 3DFX Glide (which I don't have). So, Does anyone know how to get UT to use 640X480 @ 120 Hz??? I'm guessing somewhere you can configure the game to run at 120 Hz. How is this done?

Thanks for the input. I doubt I'll try it, because of the risk... but, hey, is the only risk to the monitor and not to the video card or the rest of the computer?

Got Mig Alley working in Win2000, with a hitch. It detects my Logitech Wingman Force 3D, in the control screen, where it's bound to flight, rudder, and throttle control. It doesn't allow me to disable it (if that means anything, I don't know). Problem is, the joystick has no effect when flying. After running the profiler, I bound the trigger to the fire keyboard command, and now it can fire, but of course that's it. I'm not going to bind the axis commands to the keyboard equivalents. The joystick works fine in other games (Tachyon, XvT, XW Alliance...) Just not this one. I've tried the latest game patch. Using QFixApp, I've emulated joystick in various layers. I tried reinstalling MA without the latest game patch. I even plugged the JS into the other USB port. I've tried hitting 'J', ALT+J, CTRL+J to possibly enable it in flight mode. After looking in the manual, I found no indication of a keyboard toggle for joystick control. When I check control settings mid-flight, the JS is still enabled and bound to flight controls. Should I change the JS port ID? It's at 1, the recommended setting. Nothing works. I just don't get why. Anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks for the input, Wolf and Splat. Unfortunately, getting the game running doesn't mean much without a joystick to fly it with. Also, IL-2 isn't much an option either, as it would run like a slug on my other system, and my main interest in this type of game lies in the multiplayer aspect. (that, and MA only cost me $10 _with_ EE:AH--which allows the joystick, but has an incredibly slow framerate for some reason) Looks like I'll be sticking with Jane's WWII Fighters sim for multiplayer.

Oh, only do this if you use Win2000. If you're using NT, I have no idea how to do it.

Here's how to do it: Go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility , then click on Windows 2000 Application Compatibility Toolkit 1.5 (to the right side) and download it. Included with ACT 1.5 is QFixApp. Launch this file. The QFixApp window will pop up. Click browse then find and select the exe file which runs the game you wish to play, and click the Open button, or double click the file. Then, under the layers tab, select Win2000 (or whatever compatibility mode you wish to run the game under) Then click the Fixes tab. Scroll down about two-thirds the way and locate IgnoreAltTab. Check the box to the left of it. This should disable Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Esc, Alt+Esc, and the Windows key. It should NOT disable Ctrl+Alt+Del. Click on the word IgnoreAltTab if you wish to read a description (in the lower box) of the fix without changing the check box. Do this to read about any other fix functions you may wish to use. Keep in mind that if you go back to layers, and click a compatibility mode, it will reset the fixes to the default setttings of the mode. I don't know whether IgnoreAltTab won't allow one to use these combos in a game, or whether it will allow these combos, and just disable the usual windows response. Finally, click the Run button at the bottom left to launch the game with the fixes. Don't close the QFixApp window until _after_ you close the game. That's all there is to it. By the way, when I use QFixApp for a game requiring a joystick (not that CS players use joysticks to play CS) I check to be sure that EmulateJoystick is UNchecked. So if you run a game in Win95/98 mode and your joystick doesn't work, be sure to UNcheck EmulateJoystick. Especially if you're trying to get X-wing vs. TIE Fighter to run.

My Win9x machine has a Voodoo 3 in it. I updated to the 1.7 drivers, but then UT wouldn't launch, so I backed down and reinstalled 1.5. It's running DX 7.0. My point? I don't think the Voodoo drivers are up to date enough when it comes to DirectX 8. _Installing_ the game may have little or nothing do with this, but us Voodoo card owners are going to have more and more problems with the newer releases. I don't even bother installing games needing DX8 on my Win9x w/V3 system, and I wont until I put a GeForce2 card (thankfully, they make PCI cards for that chip now) since Nvidia is of course, still up[censored] their drivers. So, keep this in mind if you have problems playing the latest releases. As for _intalling_ them, I have little advice. But, hey, you said you'd appreciate all suggestions. Hopefully this advice may help you out later, if not now.

Unfortunately, that's not an option, but thanks for the feedback. The Wingman Force 3D is USB only. I tried reinstalling the joystick drivers (even though they were current), and that didn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

You must use QFixApp to create a fix file for your game (from ACT 1.5) Also, leave QFixApp _running_ while you launch and play your game, or the compatibility file won't work.
-
try the application compatibilty toolkit http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility then click "application compatibility toolkit for windows 2000 ver. 1.5" on the right side of the screen. Maybe try making a fix for the game (and/or the install file) by using the Win98 layer and creating a fix (using QFixApp) and remember to launch and leave running QFixApp before running the game / install file. If QFixApp isn't running, its 'fix' files for compatibility won't load when you launch the game.
-
Remember to create the fix (using QFixApp), and also remember that you need to launch and _leave_running_QFixApp_before_ launching any game which you created a fix for. For those who don't have ACT 1.5 for W2K, you can go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility then click "application compatibility toolkit for windows 2000" on the right hand side of the screen to go to the download page.

I'd like to know what games compatable with Win2000 also make good multiplayer games across LAN games. So how about everone posts there favorites with a 1-10 ranking Maybe after enough posts, I'll average all the scores... Bascially, i just want an Idea what W2K LAN games rock. So, my ratings (the ratings only appliest to the how well the game handles itself in multiplayer over a LAN.) are as follows: Unreal Tournament (with good mods, usermade maps, user made skins/voicepacks, with Infiltration, yadda yadda ya.) 10 Revolt Demo 7 System Scock 2 (though this game should be finished ALONE the first time through) 9 How would you rate your favorite W2K LAN games?

IMHO you can't accurately compare CS to UT unless you factor in a mod like Infiltration. Otherwise it's comparing apples to oranges. Once again: http://www.planetunreal.com/infiltration I think infiltration (in many ways) takes the cake over CS, problem is, CS came out first, and no one bothers with what's new sometimes, when there too busy with what's already established. Here are the updated Windows 2000 compatible LAN MULTIPLAYER game rankings (on a scale of 1 to 10) as rated by ntcompatible forum members. averages in []'s Forsaken: 10 [10] Half-life Mods: 6/10 [8] Motocross Madness 2 Trial: 9 [9] MS Hearts: 2 [2] Quake ]I[ Arena: 9/8/10/10 [9.25] Starcraft Broodwar: 10/8 [9] System Shock 2: 9 [9] Re-Volt Demo: 7 [7] Rogue Spear: 8 [8] Serious Sam: 8/6 [7] Star Trek Armada: 6 [6] Unreal Tournament: 10/8/7 [8.3] UT Mods/Mutators: 10 [10] X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter 9 [9] Anyone have any opinions on the above games, Star Wars 1: Racer, X-wing Alliance, or any other games? (rating only in a LAN MULTIPLAYER context PLEASE) Please post them. I'll update the averages periodically.

Anyone know of any downloadable demo/trial versions of games that can actually be played multiplayer? Please list them and list any known restrictions to play. Here's one to start the list: Motocross Madness 2 Trial: Two tracks, one stunt, one race. Multiplayer available in each mode. 250cc bike. I think up to 8 players. Five minute limit in each mode. Good framerates on a P2 400. TCP/IP or IPX. Allows custom joystick bindings.

Anyone know what running setup.exe with the -lgntforce modifier does? I'm not looking for "It allows you to install System Shock 2". I realize that. I'm wondering what it allows setup to do, that it could not do without the modifier. And could using it cause any problems with other applications or the OS itself?

Thanks for the info.

Bob, try http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/ut/ So far here are the Windows 2000 compatible LAN MULTIPLAYER game rankings (on a scale of 1 to 10) as rated by ntcompatible forum members. averages in []'s Forsaken: 10 [10] Half-life Mods: 6 [6] Motocross Madness 2 Trial: 9 [9] MS Hearts: 2 [2] Quake ]I[ Arena: 9/8/10/10 [9.25] Starcraft Broodwar: 10/8 [9] System Shock 2: 9 [9] Re-Volt Demo: 7 [7] Rogue Spear: 8 [8] Serious Sam: 8/6 [7] Star Trek Armada: 6 [6] Unreal Tournament: 10/8/7 [8.3] UT Mods/Mutators: 10 [10] X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter 9 [9] Anyone have any opinions on the above games, Star Wars 1: Racer, X-wing Alliance, or any other games? Yes, and more people drive Hyundais than all respectable high performance sports cars COMBINED. What's you point? How is CS superior? Realism? Right. CS uses a crosshair that magically floats in the sky. You want realism, try Infiltration for UT. Get this: you actually have to use your weapon's sights--no magical floating crosshair. Also, you can't use your weapon when crawling prone: You must stop first. http://www.planetunreal.com/infiltration Has anyone else even tried Infiltration? It's a sizable download, but it's worth every MB.

after downloading DirectX 8.1 my sound card is now recognized (though some features are still emulated) And now I can actually here several channels of audio in Racer. (taunts/engine/scraping/music) I also removed the "custom database" for SWEP1RCR.EXE and made a new one useing the Win98 layer, but with [EmulateJoystick] UNchecked. This allowed me to run X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter, and I'm hoping it fixes the screen color problem in racer discussed above. Best of luck to any who try this. Hope the input helps. (for the record, I'm using a logitech gamepad using win2000 drivers)
